Grayman Dua folder!!!! Wow

Well put Sean! Thanks! I was concerned about resharpening the Grayman edge. But it sounds like it ll last! Well I have one Dua with the stock edge and one with the RJ Magic edge! Guess I will find out over time which I prefer! But still gonna do a comparison when i start feelin better. I am still amazed with the build quality of the Dua! In the hand it just has a feeling that a lot of my other knives dont have, and by that i mean a good feeling!!

I've been lurking here for awhile, soaking up the knowledge as a complete newbie and keeping my mouth shut. I did alot of reading here and decided to venture out a little. I own a DLC DUA (#19) , something about the lines just made me buy it. It is my 1st foray into more upscale knives (to me) I've never owned a framelock before, let alone a titainium one. I tend to production Benchmades and CRKTs mostly. I love this knife. Its in my pocket as I write this. I use it for all general cutting chores, i.e food, boxes, line, plants, prying stuff (in limits of course) etc. The only thing I identifed as a problem was the cutouts along the back spine were sharp when I recieved the knife. I had to rub them down to dull the edges. They were sharp enough to cut the fabric of my pants pocket and abrade skin if I wasn't carefull. But overall its a great knife. I also like the edge that came with it. I however, am no judge, because I have never been able to get a knife "hair splitting" sharp. The workmanship of the handle slab is perfect and the lock up is very tight with no play in the blade. I would recommend this knife to anyone as being a great value in a handmade knife at production prices.

Gremlin you ve got yourself one heck of a knife! As you said very well made! Mine dont have the sharp edges on the back like you mentioned!? Maybe thats an improvement hes made? I plan on doing a lot of cutting and taking pics with both my Duas maybe tom! I will cut various things and take pics and let you guys know how the stock edge does against Richard J's hair splitter!! I have an extensive collection of knives and something keeps drawing me to my Dua's?! I think Grayman will be special in the knife world! I will get on that comparison/review! I apologize! Got sick, then had to travel and been very busy. Oh, got a new cam too!!

The comment about the sharp edges on the back were a negative reference. I was referring to the scallops along the back spine where your thumb rests. I had to dull the edges with some fine grit because when I first started handling the knife, it would abrade skin off your thumb from the edges of the scallops. It would also cut cloth on your pocket edges. Again, I fixed it with a little grit just to dull those edges and still love the ergos of the knife overall. Just something for Mike to watch for, not enough to change my mind about the knife itself.

Hmm...Mine are mos def nice and smooth!! Perhaps he missed smoothing yours out in that spot? Im sure he wouldve fixed it if you sent it to him!! LOVE the ergos!! It just fits so nicely in the hand! Im feeling better and have collected some boxes and rope so tomorrow Im gonna try to do my experiment!!! Im pondering the idea of grabbing a Satu?! Not sure I need a folder that big, but its just cool and I want one!! :D

I must admit I continue to be pretty intrigued by the Dua. I love titanium framelocks, the price is certainly right, and since I rebevel/resharpen my knives on my Edge Pro before carrying them anyway I don't really care about the factory edge. I might have to pick one up in December when, according to Grayman's site, they become available again.

The Dua's blade is a bit shorter than I prefer, so if not for the recurve, I'd have my eye on the Satu as well...

I am still surprised by the concern from some who insist that an edge must be "pretty" in order to work for its intended purpose. I use Grayman's simply to cut and pry things in a very rugged setting. I have co-workers who knock the Grayman because of its looks and design, but when they use it, they are sold. For fine cutting chores, I use a small knife blade on my multitool. For poking, basic slashing, prying, or even digging in the dirt, I use the Grayman. I have not sharpened any of my Graymans in a long while, and their edges are still decent. I have gone through hundreds of knives over 20 years (ranging in price from $50 to $6,000), and I have finally found one that does not need to be baby'd.

Again, I am quick to call a spade a spade, just look at some of my posts in my long past with this forum. These are "basic" cutting instruments only, not surgical tools, hence the price.

Sean
i'm not a fan of "pretty edges" either. i know the wheels polish the edge but thats how they work. i had an old man at a harley shop tell me that chrome wont make a harley go any faster and i guess that can apply to the edge of a knife :D. i have said before, its not what the edge looks like, its how it performs that counts.

With that said, I can tell a HUGE difference in cutting performance in polished vs unpolished edges when cutting something abrasive and grabby like sisal rope.

The unpolished edge seems to "catch" on the fibers. The polished edge glides right past them with no issues. That's just my experience though, no facts or science.

Any input on what I should cut up for my experiment? I ve got some boxes, rope, wood. Plan on doing it this afternoon!! Thx!!

ps- Neuron! Def get one! These are quality knives man!! Looks like you can reserve one on their site!!

Sorry guys! A little under the weather. Will get to it as soon as I can!! I promise I will take alot of pics and do a thorough test!!!

I finally have done my Grayman Dua test!! I took a lot of pictures but Im not the best with computers so I might have to have a friend help me post everything tomorrow! But heres a few pics to start! Both edges, the Grayman stock edge and the edge that Richard J did quite well at their test!! Order a Dua!!!

Nice job by Richard J - Did you have him buff that dark gray stuff off the knife too?

Richard J does put one hell of an edge on a knife!! He is the real deal!! He did not buff the gray one. Thats how the beadblasted version comes! The other being their Black DLC coated version of the Dua! Im still trying to figure out how to post a bunch of pics on here!?? Driving me crazy!! Keeps saying they re too big!? Can I insert photos some other way? I have my pics in IPhoto now. Thanks!

So how did each knife do in your cutting tests? Inquiring minds want to know.:)

Note: Before my test Richards edge was hair shaving sharp! And my black Dua still had its stock edge.(Which couldnt really shave hair) I started out by slicing paper. Not quite reg printer paper, a little thicker! Richards edge sliced through it like a hot knife through butter! Did maybe a dozen cuts like that. The stock Grayman did surprisingly well at the same task! Not as smooth and clean as RJ's but I was still impressed! +1 for RJ

DSCN3025.jpgDSCN3028.jpgDSCN3029.jpg

The second test was cutting a green twine like rope that is pretty strong stuff! I cut it maybe a dozen times with each knife. Both knives cut it very well! I would have to say this one was a tie!

Third test: Next up was yellow synthetic rope that is pretty common! Again a dozen cuts each knife! This one goes to the Grayman edge! I think their "toothy working edge" acted like a serrated blade and cut it very well! The RJ edge did ok with it. + 1 Grayman

Test 4: Pizza boxes! The Grayman edge performed pretty good! Could still rip apart a pizza box pretty well. But this one goes to Richard J! His edge sliced and diced up a pizza box again like butter!! While the Grayman edge still cut the cardboard box it would occasionally get hung up and cut kinda roughly. Where as Richard J's sliced er like it was tissue paper! My buddy was impressed! He had to try it for himself! He was surprised that it was still cutting like that after he watched and helped with all the other tests! +1 RJ

DSCN3034.jpgDSCN3035.jpgDSCN3038.jpg

Conclusion: Looks like this one is officially a tie! Now I am no expert by any means, this was just a little experiment of mine. To be honest, with Richard J's edge splitting hairs down the middle before the Dual of the Duas I was expecting a knockout early in the bout! But I think this proves Grayman really has created a one of a kind edge that does perform, and well!! Folks I own literally hundreds of knives and these knives made by Grayman really standout in the crowd! They are extremely well made, tough, rugged and dependable! My only concern is when it comes to resharpening their "toothy" edge out in the field without a good sharpening device. I think it would take a lot of elbow grease to get a decent edge back on her! Now by having Richard J put a beautiful V edge on the silver or beadblasted one that I own, I am confident that in a matter of minutes I could have her shaving sharp again! So I think for your average Joe the more conventional edge is more practical. And Richard J is the man to go to for that! Now I am going to keep my black Dua as is, from a collecting standpoint! Perhaps I will send her back to Grayman for a touchup and see how they do with that?! To me their "working toothy rough edge" is very cool! There is nothing else in my vast collection anything like it! I actually plan on getting another Dua and a Satu as well!! While handling my Duas I get that feeling almost like I do when opening one of Sebs! I feel that Grayman is something special!! Congrats to both Richard J and Grayman Knives! You are both masters of your craft!! So people send your knives to Richard to get one hell of an edge! And get a Grayman knife before theres a 5yr waiting period! :D
