GSO 20 request thread

If you don't mind me asking, what is the costs to cut it out? Do you just buy the steel stock separate and then send it to be cut out?

I will have to let you know when I make the final call, but there is often a "minimum" cost associated with the work and its around $500. Which led me to think about buying a larger piece of steel, and then "getting more for my money" but that starts pushing the project into "a lot of money" so i have slow rolled the project just a little bit. I could likely use a local machine shop that i use for work, but wanted to make sure to avoid ANY chance of work/private life bleed over, or concern of either side "getting a deal" because of a professional relationship. being 100% honest I will likely only be making the handles for the knives as I don't have the tools at the moment to do the grinding. If everything works out I will likely do a post detailing the design and work etc highlighting the guys who helped, I just don't want to drag them into it yet in case it all goes horribly wrong:eek::eek: haha

I have used machetes imported from South America for 25 years. Actually used them. We have 14" for my daughters, and the guys carry 18 and 20" versions. I use a 21" and 22" blade versions. Panga style. We farm and use them for clearing brush around gates, electric fence, and for cutting open round vales, etc... The primary use in spring and summer is cutting down thistles in the hay and crop and fields and in pastures. We keep them sharp and they are a tool to value.

The nimbleness that comes from thinner stock is appreciated. The blade length for me allows me to stay further back from all the scratchy brush, or thorns, and still get sufficient inertia to make clean cuts. A thick heavy blade may be fine for a fun weekend chopping "fun time" but as was already mentioned it would exhaust the arm muscles of an average person very quickly.

I guess the designer would need to envision a "target" buyer/user group and design with that in mind. I would love a 3v 20 inch "long knife" that was quick in the hand. I have never seen one other then a few custom sword types... The steel on our machetes is easily rolled and chipped due to frequent contact with dirt and knots, etc...

Keep up the hope for a 20 inch SURVIVE!

There's rumors of an unannounced SURVIVE! machete and I totally get the role of a machete as a true tool. I think this particular model is designed more for the less practical "fun time", but still with practical hard use capabilities.

:thumbup: I think it would be very cool if guy could make a gso-20 of sorts for chopping/clearing, but whether it would be the "most functional" design is debatable. In all honesty i would almost prefer a survive kukri but the sword would be easier to sharpen

Yes! Anytime the GSO20 comes out will be a fun time. It will fit the bill for me for any large blade tasks. And having the massive chopping potential doesn't mean you have to go 100% all the time, and letting the blade do the work means you don't have to get fatigued to enjoy the blade, with the proper balance and edge geometry. Even more exciting with the breakthroughs happening with the 3v heat treat.

GSO20 paired with a 4-5" blade and I'm good. Maybe throw in a necker for good measure.

Redwood, once you make this beast, I can sharpen it for you on my slack belt. You dont live that far from me.

That's awesome Riz, I would love a blade that can cut through space and time! There are bound to be a few more coming out of this slab, I just need to figure out what they will look like. My #1 want would be a kitchen knife, but since the stock im using is ~.2" that is a bit thick for anything short of a butcher knife...Seeing as you and I are about to get hit by a bastard of a snow storm, I might take the time off work to resolve some of these design decisions...

Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. :grumpy:

Not falling off... I still NEED a GSO-20!!! ;) ----

The 3v heat treat break throughs go hand in hand with the GSO 20. It makes sense now more than ever!

Nope, nope, NOPE!! The GSO-20 ain't stayin' on page two either!!

Back up with ya, 'cause I needs one (or two) I do!!! :D
