Gso-4.7

The 4.7 was nice enough to let it's ugly sister go first! still lol ... but really though i like the pivot point to be close to the handle for heavy work but i would still take 4.7's sister home :)

Hahaha!!! I have to give the 5.1 lovers a hard time!!
It's a great knife but I can't get used to choils on medium size knives. It's great on the GSO 10 though.

Actually I am starting to regret getting the 5.1 as I am slowly realizing my preference inching towards having no choil.

I was in the same boat, until I got a choiled knife from another maker. Now I like them! Haha I'd still give it a try, it may surprise you!, I may still get a 6 as well. We will just have to see

I wasn't a huge choil fan either. My esse LS had the best one I had used and I was far from impressed with it. I got the 5.1 and it was what I'd been looking for all along. The extra girth of the choil really makes a huge difference in usability. My 5.1 is the first one I've used and not felt like I was gonna slip and cut my finger off. I can actually get a good purchase on the knife without feeling like I'm digging into my finger.

For the record I typically don't wear gloves, even in situations I probably should. I know shame on me.

Not me. I love the choils on my Swamp Rats, and INFIdu, so I'm stoked for the 5.1 and its choil. I like them on anything 5 inches or more (tip to handle scales).

I still like my choil but lately I have grown more into bushcraft type knives and l kind of fell in love with how good it feels without a choil.

The lack of a choil seems to be the deciding factor for a lot of guys when it comes to the 4.7 or 5.1. I know it was for me. I can live with or without one on a larger knife. Under 6" and I would rather have the extra, usable blade area. Let's face it, when doing fine, cutting work, the choil is located right where I usually am wanting to work. Again, that's just me.

Hmmmmm… I was of the same opinion until one day working g with my RMD and choking up on the choil to dress a walking stick. It worked so well, I was instantly a believer, and I've always been a choil less guy. I believe MY problem in the past has been a poorly executed choil. They aren't rocket science, but I do believe there is an art to executing them correctly. Swamp Rat has it right. I'm anticipating S!K has it right on the 5.1. Assuming so, I frankly am anticipating the 5.1 to probably overtake the RMD as my favorite knife, which is saying a lot. IMO.

I think I need to re-look into my RMD and get the feel of choil. I haven't been using it much lately and have been having fun carving wood with my Esee 3, Mora Bushcraft black and couple of LT Wright. Maybe reignite the flame for choil.

I think the key to a good choil is to make the knife handle so that you dont feel like you have to use it, but that when you do use the choil it transforms the knife into a much smaller knife and very much changes the feel of the balance. Also it should feel natural in hand when you chole up to the choil. I think that comes from not having a large garp between your fingers. The leaging guard on the handle shouldnt be too thick. For me the RMD feel like it had too much distance between the choil and forefinger pocket on the handle. If you look at Chiral's pic of the 5.1 next to the RMD, you can see the ricasso between the choil and finger pocket is bigger on the rmd. The RMD doesnt feel as natural in hand to me as the 5.1. Hope all that made sense.

I think I see what you meant. I am visualizing the feel looking at the photo and I think what you said makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me.

I like the way you guys think! The 4.7 was nice enough to let it's ugly sister go first!

LOL!! Personally I think they are both hot...but the 5.1 is the queen of the batch! Not everyone likes a choil so let the debate begin or continue!

I had an ESEE 4 and it didn't work for me so I sold it thinking that I didn't like choils. So my first GSO was a 6 and I thought it was the end all big knife for me...that was until Josh talked me into a 7/7. I was reluctant about getting the 7/7 because of the choil and since I had a 6. I picked up the 7/7 (as seen in my avatar) from the G-burg shop and fell in love, so much so that I don't use the 6 any more.

FWIW, I have a bunch of RMDs, 5.1s, 7/7s and several Busse knives with Choils. Both companies do choils very well. The choil on the RMD and the 5.1 are very similar. If you like the RMD you'll like the 5.1. Different handle and blade geo but both great knives...with the nod going to the 5.1 for my own reasons.

They are both great knives. From my experience with each I like 3v better than INFI and I like the weight of the 5.1. The ergonomics of the RMD handles are terrific, but the old gen 5.1 handles are also very nice and comfortable. The new ones should be even better and are longer. There will be 5.1s available after the pre-order knives go out. Get one and try it out. If you don't like it as much as the RMD then sell it here. I am sure it'll find a new home quickly. Either way I'd love to hear what you think and how it compares to the RMD.

Yeah, I mentioned this choil-to-handle distance in my original review of the GSO-5.1:

I actually ended up selling the 5.1 to raise funds for goats (all of which have since been sold or butchered) - I chose to sell it over the RMD because a) worth more and b) it was actually more knife than I usually needed. Regarding (b) and i mentioned this in the other 4.7 vs 5.1 thread, the RMD and 5.1 may seem awfully similar but for me the RMD is a more compact knife and that slight difference in size vs the 5.1 is quite noticeable. The 5.1 could do light-chopping better than the RMD, and it certainly had better cutting-geometry from the get-go, but I found myself grabbing the RMD more often - maybe because I was just more used to it? I generally explained it as a matter of being more compact while still long enough for what i needed a blade that size to do. I generally seem to have smaller EDC/utility blades (3-3.5"), hunting/utility blades (~4"), and "all around/survival" blades (~5"), and after that I jump to "choppers & machetes" ranging 10-18" blades. I have a swamp rat Ratweiler on order that will be my first ~8" camp knife... we'll see if I take to it ;)

I wasn't convinced by the GSO-5 because i knew I liked the choil on my RMD for the reason indicated by Riz - turns a longer knife into a shorter knife with ease. But this new 4.7... a little more compact than the 5 but a bit more heavy than the 4.1 (which is sometimes not as capable as I need due to it's small size)... I had to try it. In fact, I was ready to buy in when all I saw was Guy's rough-cut un-ground version. I am very excited for this knife, more so than I was for the 5.1 now in hand  so excited...
