Gso-4.7

Good looking blade man! Did you score some microtextured scales, they look like the grain really stands out
You know what? I'm not certain...hadn't given it any thought. Part of me think it looks similar to the Instagram pic Guy put up of the micro-texture scales and part of me think it looks like pics of other GSO's I've seen.

This is my first piece from Survive! so I don't have a baseline. I can say it's a heck of a lot more grippy than the micarta scales on my ESEE but that's linen micarta I believe, and this one is canvas. The grips feel great on the 4.7. Can anyone make an educated guess looking at this closeup?

FWIW....all the new GSO micarta scales look that way, at least for me. I think they are the best non-contoured or non-patterned canvas micarta scales I've handled. It's one of the reasons I really love these knives.

Here's a picture of 6 knives from 5 different companies. All have canvas micarta scales. The only one that is patterned or contoured is the Ratmandu at the bottom. Anyway, as you can see the two S!Ks have the most visible texture verses all the other knives including the RMD. You can really see the canvas on the GSOs much better than the other knives. I might also add that the GSOs have the tackiest grip wet or dry (& they also have the best looking camo micarta in the biz!!). The RMD is second but it does this by adding contours or a pattern to the scales.

It's hard to say for sure, but the texture in those scales doesn't look quite the same as in the new microtexture pics.

I'd agree with that. I wouldn't think they're putting the new scales on 2nds, anyway. Regardless, I'm in Maryland where it's been raining for two straight weeks so everything is wet and the area I'm headed out to in a few hours is expecting more rain. I'm sure I'll be giving these grips the slip test as I process firewood and I'll be sure to report back on my experiences!

- It'll be more like a non-slip test...you'll be happy. I think the new grips are even tackier than the old ones even without the new texturing that Guy mentions in that Instagram feed.

Fellas, if in doubt please wear outdoor gloves when handling something as sharp as a new GSO in your hands that you have not developed muscle memory for, when using in the rain. Just my 2 cents.

Be safe and have lots of safe fun in the woods.

You are probably right about this. And it's probably just the picture, but they look more textured than either my black or camo canvas 5.1s. Either way, it's a dang nice looking set of scales. In my experience, they just get better/tackier when wet. Like OBX says, I think you'll be pleased.

Gotta say I disagree with this. When I ordered my 5.1 pre-sale, I spec'd green canvas micarta, as it is my favorite color, and canvas has been the best scales for grip. What I got, while being quite attractive, was nowhere near the grippiness I was expecting, and was rather disappointing. The linen scales on my ESEE and TOPS knives are much more grippy, especially dry. The 5.1 scales are ok when wet, but still not as grippy as the linen in other knives. I'm not sure what is going on with these, but totally different from what I was expecting. My plan is to take some 80 grit sandpaper to them and see if I can fought them up. If that doesn't work, I'll probably work a pattern into them similar to my RMD's.

I had a green canvas 5.1 as well. Surprisingly enough, the G10 (jade & bone both) was more "grippy" to me. It almost had a little rubbery give to it. Weird, i know. Maybe the smoother finish was kinda tacky to my skin? Hard to explain, but they definitely gripped my hand better than the micarta, which was definitely "slicker".

Best example would be like rubbing a paper towel (micarta) across a glass surface vs a rubber squeegee (g10) over the same surface. Kinda a weird extreme example, but that's the impression I got.

Yeah... Something weird with that green micarta. Doesn't work like I'd expect.

Sounds like more people are getting their 4.7s now. This gets me wondering whether there is likely to be many factory 1sts for sale after pre-orders go out. Hopefully they've ironed out whatever production issue prevented this on the 5.1.

DJ, their last runs of the Factory 2nds have been so nice that I would not hesitate to order one if I were you, if you see them come up on a Mondays Sale. One instantly sold on the Auction Site a couple of days ago for $325 and that seller does NOT even bother to state for the sake of full disclosure that these are factory 2nds!

For $189, they are a steal of a deal so go ahead and get one if you ever have the chance to from Guy & Co ;)

So I did what I said I'd do to my 5.1 green micarta scales: took the 80-grit sandpaper to them. Roughed them up all around, especially where they're so thick in the middle (thought about actually thinning them, but that wouldn't work with the screws). Then I took it to the sink and washed liberally/thoroughly with dishwashing soap. Now it is a completely different knife! I don't know what was done to the scales before it was shipped, but this is how I expected them to be, and now this thing has a shot as my favorite knife. Fantastic!

Now I'm wondering if I should have stuck with the canvas scales for my others.
