Gso-4.7

Oh, sorry bud, ya it was earlier in this thread on the 4.7s, so I assumed that's what you were referencing. You know me, more often with the :foot: than not.

No need to apologize at all. I totally understood what you meant and that WAS the same quote I was thinking of. Thanks for finding it!!!!!

This was posted back on May 12th and might give some insight as to the current concerns:

That should be an easy estimate and wouldn't reflect on the total number of orders, only an estimate as to what we might expect in terms of completed order shipments.

Guy's response:

With the very last of the GSO-5.1s now either shipped or sitting in a box awaiting shipment, I'm working on the GSO-4.7s with almost 100% of my focus. They are being finished and put in the mail as fast as we can. I'm not really inclined to say what percentage of the orders have shipped, as it doesn't really matter. If anything the question seems a bit loaded. Whether I say 25%, 50%, or 90%, your knife isn't going to arrive any sooner or later than it was going to anyway. I'm not holding out or purposely delaying anything but I also won't rush either.

Those posts don't specifically indicate the status of the 4.7 but they do say a bit about what is going on at Survive.
I don't expect a great deal of interaction with Ellie or Guy until July since they seem to have a full plate for the next month.
Hang in there folks! Everything is going to be okay if we all stay patient. :)

There has been a gap in shipments going out. The past couple of weeks Guy has been placing most of his focus on finishing. That way it is done and he doesn't have to keep going back and forth between sharpening and finishing so often. He also had to reset one of the machines for doing ferro notches. He is back to sharpening today, so you should be seeing some shipping notices this week.

A glimmer of hope! Thanks for the update.

Ferro notches are going away. As are bow drill divots.

I'll likely catch hell for this, but I wouldn't mind, at least until they can catch up with knives that have already been ordered, that they discontinue resharpening services.

Especially if it's just three people: one processing the orders, another working on the knives, and the third packing up/shipping them out.

Just my $.02

trevitrace, no doubt that we are all fanboys of Survive! on this sub forum but I have come to find out that this clique is quite reasonably minded and during my short time in here, I have not noticed anyone getting flamed for just criticism.

That said, we don't honestly know as to how long the Gent (we most know him, but lets not name names!) had to wait for their turn around. Plus, when Guy gets too bored sharpening the same darn thing, say the GSO 4.7 for instance day in and day out;
he may decide to take a bit of a mental break to sharpen something for fun for himself, his family, his friends, his neighbors or a well-established return and repeat customer. This may not sound fair to you, me or Bob (my imaginary friend for argument's sake)
but it is what it is and how it is! Plus, I am sure that no one expects the same level of perfectionism from Guy on blade resharpening as opposed to the expectations of receiving a brand spanking new factory First in the most perfect shape and condition.

Just my 2 cents.

If they sent a news letter out saying "we will henceforth put a pause on all resharpening, ferro notching, micro texturing and talking out of turn until we ship Silver's knife" I'd be OK with that :D
In reality I suppose there are things needing to be done other than my order, though.

Not from me. Although I think it might be difficult to not take in resharp orders since that's one of the company's selling points. But any process that can be streamlined or postponed until the runs can be handled timely, ya, I'm with you on that.

Don't forget to nix the warranty. Just think how much longer it will take if Guy has to stop to build someone a new knife just because it broke.

I still think that the resharpening and replacement scenarios are much ado about nothing! The one sizeable shipment of GSO knives to be sharpened was most probably just an outlier! I mean most people who have 1, 2 or 3 GSOs, just hang onto them like dear life.

I think what Survive! really has to concentrate on is to NOT let the fulfillment period take more than 12 months from when preorders are closed, because they will eventually lose goodwill among their customers and business will potentially go elsewhere even if other
knifemakers don't come up with something equally as great as GSO models with similar price competitiveness.

Well said and undoubtedly is already occurring. I was lucky to purchase a GSO 3.5 and a 4.1 several years ago, prior to their move to Idaho. It was a simple transaction of going to the web site, selecting the knife, paying for it and it was sent out promptly. Having purchased a 4.7 via the pre sale I have buyers remorse, especially with the statements of shipment dates that never occurred. I feel for those buyers who parted with their money over 14 months ago.

As it has been stated over and over in the "Good,Bad, and Ugly" forum, it is very unwise to pay for a knife until it is ready to ship. Especially when there are hundreds of available knives on the Fixed Blade for sale forum, many less than $250 and they are of very high quality as I can attest to having purchased many from there. And you are rewarded in many instances with a true custom.

Part of the problem was letting people pre order such a long time in advance
I pre ordered, and I will wait patiently but I will never pre order again

I am relatively new to the Survive! scene and I was not aware as to how much faster things were done in the past, but I had often wondered because there were a whole host of old school GSOs floating around! The Survive! problems seems to be a myriad of too fast of an expansion, a major move, ambitious product line combined with necessities for expensive production line machinery, suppliers issues; etc... These growing pains can be worked out though and I hope that they do because I really like this Co, their products and the culture which they have created. IMO, they deserve getting a reasonable pass till they can figure things out after they have had a chance to let their proverbial hairs down.

Personally speaking, I have so far committed myself to 4 GSOs. 2 x 5.1s (F-2nds) out of which I flipped one (because I wasn't sure whether I wanted 3V or 20CV!). I have also bought a F-2nd 4.7 and preordered a GSO 6. I had someone who was interetsed in my other GSO 5.1 and once I get my 4.7, I will keep my word and will contact him. If he passes or has found something else, I will NOT part with my 5.1 despite my lukewarm opinion regarding the choil. The GSO 6 could come to fruition so far down the road that I rather have two GSOs at hand at any given time. In the meantime, I will just scour the Monday Sales landscape to snipe whichever other model I desire and if I land a 3.5 or a 2.7, I will just add to the other two.

In closing, until we get more definitive words from Ellie regarding targeted fulfillment zones (hopefully after she's back refreshed from the June mini break and after sadly dealing with the friend's funeral) with all these rampant speculative time periods being mentioned on here by members (myself included), I will refrain from further pre-production orders. However, my first allegiance still remains committed to Survive! with their Monday Sales before I go to the Exchanges or to eBay. Just MHO!
