Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Earlier today I mentioned that I thought we'd seen an unprecedented level of new interest in the Lambsfoot pattern, or, at least, this thread. I thought I'd see if I could back that up with data. Here's what I found about the number of members contributing to this thread, looking at all posts up through page 1232:

2016: 62 different members posted
2017: 103 different members posted; of these, 66 had never posted here before
2018: 126 different members posted; of these, 65 had never posted here before
2019 (YTD): 151 different members posted; of these 73 had never posted here before

So, just shy of half way through 2019, we already have 20% more members posting and 12% more first-time posters than in all of 2018.

Not too shabby, folks. Keep spreading the word. :)
GREAT research!!! Keep up the good work:thumbsup:

How 'bout you?

Hello Guardians. It’s late (for me). I spent the day with my oldest daughter(38) which included her getting her second tattoo and going to my favorite place in the world(Johnnie’s) for an Italian Beef/Sausage Combo fries, and an Italian Lemon Ice.

Regretfully with all the activity here, I was unable to give proper recognition to all. Just know that you all are the greatest reasons for being here. I will say thank you kindly to @5K Qs.

Here’s a snap from 1982 of my daughter Stacey, former wife(and now friend), Bonnie and myself,

Good morning and a great weekend for everyone.:D
Today I started the day to admire and are in my pocket, these two beautiful pieces Lambsfoot.
I wanted to thank Jack once again for the wonderful work he has done with the Hartshead Barlow and I hope he is not angry with me for what happened with the stag knife (yes I am disappointed), but everything is over, they will be admired as rarities, now I hope there is much good news from Lambsfoot knives!;):thumbsup:

I'm a novice in this thread yet I visit on a regular basis:thumbsup: I have a LOOOOONG story in regards to my ebony Lambfoot and the Horn that Jack gifted me is such a sentimental knife so see's little pocket time, even then it seem that it's a bit camera shy. But this one, well now, this is a totally different story and one that will be told often;):p

Thank you Duncan for such a WONDERFUL gift and another one to be posted in the very near future that I was gifted by our LEGENDARY Kiwi:thumbsup:

Now, while on the topic of LEGENDARY, Mr Jack Black, this my friend is truly LEGENDARY and that is spoken with a sincere Heart:thumbsup: The accolades (and I've read most if not all) are so deserving. Walk proud Jack because your history and legacy are more than secure. This is exquisite, SOLID, yet refined and as I mentioned in an earlier pm, a portal to cutlery as it was once made long ago by truly skilled cutlers:thumbsup:

Thank you Duncan, Thank you Jack as now I can finally honor the Gaurdian moniker in my Sig line and participate in this terrific thread:thumbsup:

Totally Gobsmacked:):):)

Beautiful Stag Paul! Your description is spot on my friend! :D

Morning Guardians, I flushed SJs joint last night and it appears that some of the grit was hiding a fairly significant gap in the joint. It appears the spring is thicker than the tang. (See below) Do any of you have a DIY remedy for this issue?
l0Rsq5D.jpg

I know some of you are fairly handy when it comes to these things.

Thanks in advance
Jiki

Good Saturday morning Guardians, dog training is on for today. I thought about carrying the handsome HHB, but will go with Rosie instead. Have a good day, all.

Thanks for the reminder, Preston. :) Looks like you have multi quote capabilities back again!:thumbsup:
Yes, Gary, I'm hopeful that the fixes they did at the 'puter shop cured it's ills and I won't have anymore!
Very eloquently put, Preston; thanks for speaking for so many of us!:cool::cool:
Thanks.
Waynorth Real Lambfoot, Sheffield Design, American Made! Wow!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::D:D:D

They sure are a handsome pair...nice job getting the ebony to show just how nice it is!
I've been doing an abysmal job of keeping up on this thread this week. Too much to do and too little time!!

I missed out on the rosewood's but Jack was gracious enough to give me 2 stags. I don't know what's wrong with me.... I like to have a back up of my favorite knives. It's going to be hard to beat these for knife of the year! Thank you Jack! You really outdid yourself with these! I can't imagine how much time and energy you spent on these, but they really are stellar!

I had plenty of commute time so lots and lots of CFing......

I'll try my best to catch up this weekend, but the weekend's jam packed also. Hope you all had a great week Guardians!

When you were told to 'get a pair', you did it right:D:cool::D This thread is a freight train, I just try and not get left in it's dust!
Dwight, you got the ebony to show off also, great job...but then, you always do!

Nice intimate post Harvey, thanks for sharing with us. I'm not in the tattoo camp, but glad she likes it. Johnnie's looks like my kind of place, love Italian food, worked my with through college making pizza in an Italian restaurant. The pay($1.10 per hour) wasn't great but the food was. Yes, it was a long time ago:D

Oh, that stag is so nice, and so well photographed:thumbsup:

.......................Splendid pic of your rosewood Hartshead, Rachel!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
Although I'm a graduate of Purdue University, whose mascot is a Boilermaker (the human worker, not the drink), I've never tried the drink. (As a student, I once attended a party where beer was generously served from a keg, and then had some whiskey near the end of the evening, and my stomach violently rejected the combination. I suppose that could be considered a "backwards Boilermaker", but IIRC, it was the last time I had "hard liquor".:().........................

Thank you, sir! I appreciate your thoughts and kind words.
A clean sweep of the Stag world series!! :D Wrights and Jack Black Jack Black did a bang up job on the Hartshead Barlows. Thanks, Jack! Although I am partial to the Stag, for obvious reasons,;) I am drawn to the Rosewood as well. It's beautiful and an apt combo for this particular knife, glad to see yours, GT.

Regarding the "backwards" boilermaker: Order of consumption is crucial to having a tolerable experience.;) If you ever find yourself in a similar situation maybe this nursery rhyme will help guide you.
Liquor before beer, you're in the clear.
Beer before liquor, you've never been sicker.

Headed 150 miles south today to celebrate our grandson's (Jaxon Trace) 4th birthday. :) Have a great weekend all.IMG_3591.jpeg

Love the photos and dialog Chin Thank you very much :cool::D
I'll drink to that!
Great post, Chin, as usual.
I appreciate the time and effort you put into your posts. Very enjoyable.
Cambertree Cambertree It’s always a treat to travel through your posts, Chin. Lacking your eloquence, let me just say thank you. Congratulations on getting your Handsome Barlow.
As always Chin, a fantastic post. Awesomeness in your new barlow my friend!
Cambertree Cambertree - great write up and thanks for the pics

Thanks very much Dave, Vince, John, Harvey, Dwight and OG - you’re all most kind, and I appreciate your gracious words a lot.

This is such a great group to hang out with.

Chin, you're so international! Browning, Zeiss and A.Wright's in the same photo (and a beautiful one, at that!).

Thanks Jeff, you have a good eye, my friend.

Now you have me wondering how many different source countries I could cram into a pic along with my Lambsfoot knives! I should have thrown in some Austrian binos and German designed, Portuguese made glass (Leica rangefinder)!

By coincidence, I saw a copy of an English comic from the 1980's called Crisis, which revived Dan Dare (and the Mekon) :)
Hi GT, "Dan Dare-Pilot of the Future" was a comic book hero from the 1950's sci-fi comic 'Eagle'. The Eagle ran from 1950 to 1969 and Dan Dare was it's main character until 1967...

The bust of Dan Dare, at the Atkinson Museum in Southport.
qdevPKR.jpg
Cool stuff lads, I used to like reading Crisis and the later Revolver a lot, they were comics that were way ahead of their time in many ways.

Grant Morrison and Rian Hughes did an excellent take on Dan Dare as a retiree, living on a military pension, and writing his memoirs in a Thatcheresque dystopian ‘future’. While the people of the north are starving, Dare is brought out of retirement to be the figurehead for the reelection campaign of Prime Minister ‘Gloria Monday’.

It's always a treat when you post Chin :) That's great that you and cudgee cudgee were able to meet up, and that's a fascinating snippet of Lambsfoot history

I'm glad the package arrived mate :) Of course, as soon as it was on its way, I started finding other things I meant to include  I'm glad you liked the coin and book though, and the Hartshead Barlow of course :) Thank you for all your kind words. I must say, I think you got some particularly nice stag there :) Fantastic pics :)

Thanks Jack, no worries my friend.

Yes I agree - the Sambar stag on all these Hartsheads is very fine, but I’m grateful to have scored an exceptionally nice one. The mark side has bold, deep linear grooves which remind me of GEC’s Horsecut Bone jigging pattern. The pile side has some great knobbly high spots, which will get even better over time with some pocket wear.

I lucked out, as being a southpaw, I like knives which have a good pile side, and this one certainly delivered in that respect. Another thing I look for on stag covers is some lighter spots, which will develop that lovely yellow buttery colour over time, and this one has that too.

I’m still happily CFing and CEing this knife, every spare minute!

All the time, money, effort and accumulated knowledge and wisdom you put into designing and getting these made is very much appreciated.

What a great write up Chin! There's some handsome looking knives in those pictures.
I was looking at that white stuff in the top photos and thinking "huh?" But of course it's your winter isn't it. And those Flatty Tails look delicious!

Cheers David.

Yes, I’m not really a knife collector, I just like examining and using historical working knives from different parts of the world, and trying to gain an understanding of different patterns and steels and hand tool evolution. The Lambsfoot knife must easily be the most represented single pattern in my ‘accumulation of edged tools’.

Yes it’s winter here mate - not winter as you know it of course, and certainly nothing like Dave and Will must take for granted.

I was hunting up around the 1000-1200 metre (3300-4000’) line in the High Country. A dusting of snow makes tracking sign much easier, of course. This was the only hunt I recall being on, that I’ve seen no fresh deer sign at all, despite that area usually being well populated with Sambar.

Rkdb2Ew.jpg

My hunting partner and I kept covering more ground, and finally came across some other hunters who told us that the area had had a hound crew working it over heavily all week.

Never mind, it’s always a pleasure just to be out in the bush at dawn, and the campfire conversation and cameraderie is always something to look forward to as well.

But that’s part of the gamble of hunting public land. It’ll be back to private property next time, for sure.

Hoisting a pint to my first born grandson today, who's wife just birthed my third great-grandchild! :D:D:D

Congratulations Barry! And I’ve been admiring all those excellent photos you’ve been posting lately.

Seeing as all you good people out there from all over the planet have made me feel so welcome into the Guardians, and i think i was officially accepted last night, Thanks Chin:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:, i thought i had better do the right thing and start pulling my weight. So i have just paid for a membership to Blade Forum[ and you all thought i was going to post a photo ]. Thanks to all, and may our many Friendships be long and lasting ones. Now remember- Have a good week-end Mr Walker, you too son.;)

Well said mate and good on ya for supporting the forum. The Porch is truly a special place on the net, and the Guardians is a great corner of the Porch.

I can never get enough of seeing that one, Ron. All the Ironwood 2019s are unique in their way, but that one is just about the most graceful and elegant in its patterning IMHO. One of Dylan’s @Pàdruig is similar if I remember aright, the one with diagonal stripes on the other side.

My favorite tools:
bxHYKe2.jpg

I'm now on the look-out for a finger plane. It's a like a hand plane, but smaller.

Great pic Rachel, and a fine set.

Dang, if I’d known you were after a finger plane, I could’ve gotten you a brand new one, made with the original tooling, at the last place I worked at. I’ll keep an eye out for a second hand one, although they’re not as common as some of the other old Sheffield made woodworking tools.

I like this ‘Lambsfoot and Tools’ theme - good call @JohnDF .

I’ll have to take a few pics mañana.
Good Morning or evening, depending on your time zone. To all you members from England, i am just about to cook a good English fry up for breakfast. Eggs, bacon, sausages and tomato's, followed by a POT of tea. Hope everyone has a good weekend.
Nice one mate. I had some chips left over from dinner last night. We Guardians know what to do with leftover chips, yeah?

Breakfast Chip Butty, with a double helping of Lamb on the side!

Thanks for the post, Chin; as always, the content was fascinating! Thanks for helping cudgee cudgee with the photo of lambsfoot, and welcome, cudgee, to the Guardians!

Chin, congrats on your Hartshead Barlow with its grandly gnarly stag!

Thanks GT. Grandly gnarly indeed, my friend. One of the things I enjoy about each new edition of Jack’s Lambsfoots landing with their new owners is looking forward to your perceptive descriptions of the different examples.

I also appreciate the interesting analytical data you and Greg @WhittlinAway present on the Guardians thread.

Greg, I think I lost your comment in the multiquote, so I’ll just say thanks, and it’s great to see you back here posting regularly, my friend.

(Sorry, in splitting this post and copying it to Notes on my phone it’s corrupted the images and emoticons in the quotes. I’ve tried to go back and fix them, but if I do more than one, it deletes all the others again. I’ll just have to leave it, I’m afraid - with apologies if I’m referring to images that you can’t see.:()

I've picked it up that hammer twice now, but managed to resist :D I just hope it's not there next week! :D

Yeah, it was real strange having a 5 week holiday too!

The saw-set is for setting the angle of teeth on a saw. When I bought it, I didn't actually know what it was, just thought it looked cool! :D Somewhere on the t'internet, there's a PDF guide to German tool manufacturers, and that saw-set is on the cover. I have it somewhere, but Windows has decided to update my PDF files, so you can't see what they are anymore

Too late to get my tool-boxes out tonight, but Barry's idea is a good one, and could run ;)

Cool pics my friend :)

Nearly 9.30pm here, and I am only just getting time for a beer

Jack, with a little tweaking that Black sheep bottle cap could make a wonderful Guardians badge/pin!
Also wanted to mention how nice the slips turned out. There is something about the fabric itself that screams quality. It's hard to describe. Thanks again for that thoughtful addition and gift to all us Guardians.:cool:
Good to see Lucy again.
