A first-class photo Jack.Afternoon Guardians,
My mate on the market tool-stall was on his own today, so I stayed with him from 7.30am to 2.30pm. Quite a stint, but of course it has left me running behind here, so I'll go and make a cup of tea, and try to get caught up![]()

Hi Guardians,
I have registered here, because I wanted to get more info on how to acquire a Hartshead Barlow. Maybe some of you have read my thread, thanks to @cigardog for directing me to write here.
How did I get here in the first place? Well, a long time ago, maybe one or two years ago I was looking for knives still made in the UK. That’s when I found an article in the guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/money/2010/jan/23/make-a-sheffield-pocket-knife) about Sheffield’s cutlers and looked at some knives from Trevor Ablett. I never bought anything from Mr. Ablett, somehow the time was not right, which I now regret…
Well somehow traditional knives were not my cup of tea the last few years, I’m more into G10 stuff and a/was great fan of spyderco. That’s why I bought a UKPK, but I always want to support small, traditional business and somehow traditional knives have grown on me (this might be that I have lived in the uk for the last year and grown more fond of the uk than I already was before). But at first I looked at knives from Case and some from makers in Solingen in Germany, where I’m from. But decided I want to go with a British knives legend (I think the blade has a very interesting shape).
So through this I ended looking through the guardians nice knives picturesJ, especially I found the Hartshead Barlow knife you and instantly fell in love with it. I tried to somehow find a source to acquire a Hartshead, but since this is not that easy possible, I tired to forget about it.... Thought I could live with a “normal” lambsfoot, but I enjoy the looks of the Hartshead to much and always, for the last few weeks, are coming back to the nice pictures of it you the Guardians are posting!
I’m not sure how to proceed, since I’m on limited funds as a student, save the money for a Hartshead? Or buy a “normal” lambsfoot from Wright (rosewood) or Taylor Eye Witness, which are stainless. I really prefer things made of stainless…
What would the Guardians, you, advice me to do? I need to become a guardian…, immediately.
I came because of made in England, will most likely stay because of the Hartshead, which I think is the most superb traditional knife!
One thing I forgot, I enjoyed the pictures of the production at A.Wright tremendously, thank you very much toJack Black for posting them
All the best

Hello Ulix and welcome. Just to reiterate what was previously said, the Hartshead Barlow is an SFO. My advice was and is, to lurk at first and to read the link offered in the first post. SFOs are occasionally offered to those who regularly participate. I also said that we don’t discuss the buying process and only post Lambsfoot images, and no other patterns. Any discussion of such concerns are best handled via PM(which is one of the many benefits of BFs membership).
This is a great group and I wish you the best.

Maybe I should carry my lucky lambsfoot tomorrow:

Hello.
I will try to help explain what Harvey was saying. By the way, Harvey iscigarrodog -notice the slightly different spelling than the person you tagged. (@cigardog)
Harvey was saying to read the first post in this "Guardians of the lambsfoot" thread, the thread you are in now. I might add to read the first few pages of this thread as it might help answer some of your questions.
I have copied the first post of this thread below and taken the liberty of highlighting, in red, some of the points that apply to this conversation.
Click on the box below to expand so you can see the content.
All the best,
Mark
Here is a pic of one of the "Hartshead Barlow" an SFO (special factory order) commissioned by Jack Black through Wrights.

@Onebigbill Your HHB is a real looker! I use a Benjamin Marauder .25 cal with the black synthetic stock. And I have a Hawke Airmax 4-12x AO scope on it. The box the scope came in says it was "Born in the UK".

Hi Ulix,
Thank you for introducing yourself, it's good to have you here, and thanks for the kind words on my Hartshead Barlow. The Barlow was a limited edition 'Special Factory Order' (SFO) made for our little club here, so not available elsewhere. It has carbon steel liners and bolsters, as well as a carbon steel blade, so if you prefer stainless, you might be better looking for a knife by Eggington (Joseph Rodgers and IXL brands) or Taylor's Eye Witness, who use stainless. However, we discuss the knives themselves here, not the buying process, so if you think you need any further advice in this respect, you might want to consider purchasing a Bladeforums membership, which allows private messages between members, is inexpensive, and supports the site here![]()
All the best

OH Cripes!!
HiJack Black ,
thank you very much for welcoming me. I’m not fixed on stainless, I actually prefer carbon steel as knife blades. My comment was more orientated towards the knives bolsters, I saw that a lot of lambsfoots have nickel ones and would prefer steel ones… I thought the Harthead bolsters are stainless steel, thanks for clarifying, that was actually one of my questionsI don’t know if there is ever a Hartshead I’m definitely in for one or two…
Looking through the pictures, I’m somewhere on page 170, I think I will more appreciate a Lambsfoot from Wright.
By the way, Jack great taste in whisky! Enjoyed a few weeks back a small sip of Highland Park (12yo), need to get a bottle some time.
Lastly, it’s splendid you taking the time for posting some pictures from Sheffield and the production at Wright’s, I really enjoy the pictures you uploaded – as well as YOU initiated this great Guardianship, thank you very much for that!
It might take some time till I order my first lambsfoot (still torn), but after that I’m thinking of subscribing to the forum… and hope to become a proper member of the guardians.
All the Best
