I've got my ebony Big'un back in my pocket.

I mentioned a while back that when the Agave, or Century plant is at the end of its life cycle, it sends up a 25 to 30 foot tall stalk. I've been keeping an eye out for one to photograph when I'm driving around town, and saw a pair of them this morning. They've already branched out; when they first shoot up they look exactly like giant asparagus.

Sitting on the chipper chute waiting for my brother to get back from dumping a load of chips... Playing with my lambsfoot
You got that right Jack! When I carry these two I could almost swear my head swells just a little!

Looking good Jack!Now I’m hungry!

I believe the plant is putting all its energy into dispersing seeds before it dies, although they mostly reproduce by spreading "pups" from their root system.Yay!Wow, thanks for taking those pics Rachel, that's fascinating. Is there a purpose to the shoots in terms of the plant? Also, are they edible (they do look like asparagus)?

Unfortunately, the "asparagus" isn't edible. I can just imagine a vegetarian Texas barbecue with one giant asparagus stalk turning on a spit over a fire.![]()
Wow, that is a crazy story!...
Hope everyone is having a good dayMy 5-year old cough seems to have got worse, I'm frightened to leave the house in case I get bagged up and carried off!

Actually, something like that happened to someone I used to know, he's a real pasty-faced guy, and scruffy too, in fact he stinks
He was travelling across China on a train, during the middle of the SARS epidemic. The train stopped at a small station, and looking out of the window, he saw a load of people wearing bio-hazard suits. He's wondering what the heck is going on, and they come into the carriage he's in carrying a stretcher. He still doesn't know what's going on, but suddenly loads of the passengers are pointing at him. He can't speak any Chinese, but he's grabbed by the people in suits, strapped to the stretcher, and dragged, protesting, off the train!
Turns out some of the other passengers, seeing his unhealthy appearance, had reported him as a SARS case! They took his passport off him, and kept him for about a month. He had to bribe his way out in the end, which must have been hard, because he's incredibly tight-fisted!
When he got back and told the story, he had to suffer further, because while people felt sorry for him, they couldn't stop bursting into laughter!

Too right Willie, you never know where I'd end up!![]()

Great pics, Dan!Back from our afternoon walk. My kids called back at me from up ahead in the trail to hurry up.
I caught up to them to see a couple of swans on the river. Very cool. We had never seen swans in our area.
After reading up on swans in Ontario on the interweb we think they are mute swans, an invasive species from Europe that was brought in in the late 1800's by rich folks to keep in their gardens.
The trumpeter swan, native to north america and once considered extinct is slowly making a comeback in Ontario.
The main difference is in their beaks, the mute swan is orange, the trumpeter is black. My kids with their great eyesight assure me their beaks were orange( zooming in on my iphone pics does not really help either)

It was a weird Saturday without my usual HHB in my pocket, because of Mike’s challenge, and no Premier League matches on TV. I probably watch way too much televised sports, so I’m determined to use this time to get outside in the daytime, and in the darkroom at night. Here’s a file photo.

Jack Black - Much thanks, Jack. Great story. Looks like you and your Hartshead had a very nice hike. What an inviting looking pasty. I quickly scan 360 when coughing and clearing my throat in public.
Take care, my friend. Oh wait...Don’t remember if I ever answered your previous question. The fruit was store bought, and as good as if it was fresh picked.
Good Evening Guardians.
Last 1-XL image for now from Mike’s Challenge.

That picture reminds me of Lady and The Tramp...
Glad to see you've had your Sunday Sausage Sandwich.
