Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

...
I can put up with the cosmetics on those cheap knives, so long as they don't mess the edge/blade up like that o_O Is there anything that can be done with it, or is it unsalvageable? :(
Well... I'll be honest, Jack... if it can cut an apple, then it meets the most demanding task I generally put my knives through on a daily basis!

The blade isn't bad as a working knife, in fact I quite like it, and the point really is fantastic at marking templates when I need it! It just really irritates my OCD that it is crooked enough to miss the stone at certain points along the edge, which then leaves a wavy grind line.

So I'm happy to stick with my straight, pretty knives for daily tasks, and rely on this one for those special occasions when I actually need a knife! :D:thumbsup:

Good evening Guardians! We been ordered to shelter in place except for essential travel. I spent the day working in the yard. I’m all cleaned up now and we’ve had our evening meal. I’m relaxing with all my forum friends and my 2018 Ebony Guardians SFO is by my side. Y’all stay safe out there! :)

Just ordered up an A Wright and sons Lambsfoot in buffalo horn which im excited about. My first Lambsfoot knife was a large rosewood and while i liked the pattern i ended up selling it off as there was much to be desired on that example as well as having a rather crooked blade. I also found it to be a little on the larger side (duh!) and really wanted the buffalo covers to begin with anyway so hoping the second time around is a better experience. Many beautiful examples in this thread and while i realize alot of them are probably hand picked, ill be happy with mine if it has a straight blade!

You are very observant my friend, cut for looks rather than function. I reviewed the same boots for another (better) magazine, Climber & Hillwalker too. I reviewed 10 pairs of boots for the feature, with my editor at the magazine adding a couple of additional ones - probably part of the reason I suffer so much with my feet now!

Great minds think alike! :D Thanks for sharing those magazine pages, it’s pretty cool to read some of your gear reviews!

Yeah, testing out 10 pairs of new, un-broken-in boots sounds hard on your feet! I’m curious, Jack, did you ever test out the Danner Mountain Light? Back before I bought my current hiking boots (which was probably 10 years ago now), I ordered a pair of these online. They seemed popular and I read a lot of positive reviews, but man, they must have been the stiffest, most uncomfortable thing I ever put on my feet. o_O Maybe I could have eventually made ‘em work (with some different insoles and a lot of breaking in), but after wearing them around the house for a few days, I gave up and sent them back. :D

That certainly would have been a hike Barrett! My hand slipped while pouring this one last night

6LikLnR.jpg

Looks like an acceptable pour to me. How do you like those Glencairn glasses? A friend gave me a set for Christmas and I’ve been using them since. They do seem to make a difference in how you experience the aroma, but I’m not sure I enjoy actually drinking from them all that much. The opening of the glass is an odd size, and I feel like my nose gets in the way! :D

You can buy them Barrett, but the idea is that you go out and pick them fresh :)

I mean, I guess you could do that… :D

I guess I forgot to post picture before.

I like the way your two-tone wood knife matches your two-tone wood bowl.

I wonder if any of you Guardians remember driving through Missouri back in the 90s or early 2000s (and earlier, I’m sure) and seeing these billboards every 5 miles or so for hundreds of miles?

UpEXhna.jpg

Back in high school, a friend and I drove from Northwest Arkansas to St. Louis and back in one day. We kept laughing about the constant assault of WALNUT BOWL billboards, and when we got closer, we decided that we might as well stop there (so I guess the excessive billboard marketing worked ). We each bought the cheapest little bowl they sold. I still use mine for collecting change and other random stuff from my pockets at the end of the day.

(I remember reading a few years back that the “Original” Walnut Bowl Factory Store burned down, but for the life of me, I couldn’t find any information about it when I tried to Google it today.)

I too use my bowl and its larger matching mate on my dresser for my pocket dump. Mine were made by a good friend that I worked with, he gave them to me when he retired, he kept them on his desk at work.

Was there a national chain of walnut bowl factory stores? In the 1980s, there was one on I35 between Austin and Dallas. Whenever we'd make that drive, we'd see lots of billboards, and on one trip decided to finally stop and check it out. They also sold some walking sticks, but otherwise it was just a store full of walnut bowls. I felt disappointed for some reason but I don't know what else I was expecting.

Sorry to hear that. You don't have an awning or porch?

Well, at least you got a fantastic pic out of it! Well done!

Amen. Among the things that we can count on in these crazy times is that the photography skills of Pàdruig Pàdruig and cigarrodog cigarrodog will remain top-notch. Thank you, gentlemen, for that. And, thank you, everyone, for continuing to be present here, even if it's just lurking, which is my usual mode of late.

That's a shame Dylan, do you have a tarp you can rig up? Still a great pic my friend

Thank you so much for the kind compliments, fellas! I do have a wonderful back deck but it is sadly lacking a cover - 'tis a project that I plan to remedy this summer. I did have a table with an umbrella setup but my wife did some rearranging and it isn't in an ideal spot at the moment.

I hope you all are keeping well in these strange times. I wanted to talk about Linus for a moment - I might have missed it somewhere but last I saw, he was with Mark? I hope he is well. With everything that is going on in the world, please do not feel obligated to adhere to the guidelines of the passaround. If anyone needs help with shipping, send me a message, I will gladly cover it. Otherwise, stay healthy, keep safe, and enjoy what pleasant moments that come your way.

I hope the weekend turns out to be a pleasant one. I'm taking advantage of a nice break in the weather with some good Ol' Ironwood.

@mitch4ging - Thank you Dennis, my friend. I swan(yes it’s a word:))if you didn’t make a perfect recruitment poster. Go Spearhead! Sophie definitely has command presence. She’s beautiful. Cheers to your Guinness and Lamb.

Jack Black Jack Black - Wonderful image of your repast, Jack. Cool sheath for your AC. I’m enjoying the afforded glimpse of your boot reviews.

JohnDF JohnDF - Seriously...That’s one of the nicest knife sheath I’ve ever seen. Love the black stitching.

CelloDan CelloDan - Dan, you make beautiful outdoor images, snow or not.

@WhittlinAway - So kind of you to say such nice words, Greg. I would say you and all the Guardians produce equally fine images. Loved your Sourdough image.

Prester John Prester John - Great self portrait of you and your Hartshead, Vince.

Half/Stop Half/Stop - I wish the whole country would act as one, with every State sheltering in place. May you and yours stay safe, Ron. Your 2018 Ebony SFO and a plate of bounty looks quite appealing.

Good Evening Guardians. Safety First!

We have nothing but time right now. ;)
I think they turned out nice and look good too.:thumbsup:
As you can see, it's another beautiful day in Nor Cal. Bonus points if you spot my dog.

Nice work John, and that's great-looking garden furniture, and dog - what little I can see of him! :D

It would irritate me too Matt, it's possible it's a 'second', but either way, I think it's shameful that a knife leaves the factory in that condition :(

Hope you get a good one, I'm afraid they can be very hit and miss :( I can put up with cosmetic flaws, but a crooked blade would kill it for me too o_O Many of the knives here are SFOs, and I think it's fair to say they're very different to the standard models, hand-picked or not

Thanks Barrett, I probably tested 20 pairs of boots that year, maybe more, it was a full-time job for me, as I acted as a design consultant to a few manufacturers too. In terms of publishing, that winter boots article was published in the January issue, which would have come out in December, and so I would have submitted it in November. Some of those boots I'd previously reviewed for other publications the winter before, and they were still available (no point writing about boots which nobody can buy), others I'd tested at the end of the previous winter, but some of them I'd have had to test in the summer, when I'd have preferred to be wearing lighter footwear otherwise. At the time, I didn't think I'd ever have a problem with my feet, but testing all those rigid, stiff boots (and I tested plastic mountaineering boots too) almost certainly contributed to the problems I have now.

At the time I was testing, the only Danner boots imported here, were military-style boots, which were sold by a sole-trader (no pun intended). I did review a few military-style boots, but not Danners. That pair look like a well-made pair of boots, but also very old-fashioned in terms of the Alpine styling. Over the past few decades, boots have become much lighter, with manufacturers utilising techniques, materials, and designs from other forms of footwear. Generally, a well-fitted pair of boots shouldn't require tortuous breaking-in, as in the past, but the trade-off is in longevity, so manufacturers get to sell more boots

Looks like an acceptable pour to me. How do you like those Glencairn glasses? A friend gave me a set for Christmas and I’ve been using them since. I'm not sure yet Barrett, but I doubt I'll be using one regularly. I think that's the first time I've drunk Lagavulin from one (I may be wrong), and I did overfill the glass, but I found the narrow neck of the glass tended to funnel the alcohol too much, rather than letting it disperse, and rather masking what I really enjoy about that whisky. For tasting, I think I prefer a wine-tasting glass, and for drinking I prefer my own whisky glass :)
