Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Venison chili goes well/on hotdogs If you want lots of filler there is Cincinnati chili which has both bean and spagetti. The reason I am not posting much is that I am in Hospice care with terminal cancer
I am very sorry to hear this WHT. I lost my stepmother to cancer last year. About the only silver lining in my mind was that she managed to repair some relationships and had some peace from that. I hope that you are also able to find some peace and comfort in this time.

Oh man...I am sorry, I am saddened deeply to read this. Hospice people are usually absolutely tremendous, I hope the Staff caring for you are just that and make you as comfortable as can be.

Thank you, jack. :)

Can I come over for dinner?
Anytime John! :)
Recently i took on a project to try and improve a lambsfoot that i have, it was sort of successful but not what i wanted to achieve. But in the process my curiosity was aroused, i had done some research, but there was limited material out there. I wanted to know how much actual dye could be removed from the bone covers of a knife. After my experiment, i came to the conclusion that dark colours could not be removed completely, but you would have more success with lighter colours. My father had many sayings, one was, if you want to know how to do something, ask someone who does it for a living, and another was, don't be afraid to have a go at trying something new yourself, that way you will learn by YOUR mistakes. So i hunted around and found a woman online who's career is collecting bone and making trinkets and ornaments with it. She scrounges bone from dead animals in the bush, and buys bone from professional hunters. I emailed her with some questions, and she said my conclusion about dark dye being nearly impossible to remove compared to light dye was correct, but she also pointed out something that i would never had known, the longer a dye is in the bone no matter what colour it is becomes nearly impossible to remove. This got me thinking, so i have come up with an idea that we can all participate in and learn from. My thinking is, as i have attempted this already and with what i have already learnt, and with a what we are about to attempt, we can all learn something and members of the porch my find the conclusions helpful into the future if they are attempting to mod their own knife covers.

So this is the project, and i am making it like a class project like we use to have in school, so all comments, observations and input is welcome, this is not just my project it is for everyone here who is interested, so feel free to join in. I have a supposed knife nick opener, for that, it is not worth a cold pie, but i use it as an emergency screwdriver but mainly as a scraper to clean knife strops, for that it is brilliant, and as our little mate Rachel pointed out, great for opening pistachio nuts, and who doesn't love them:p.

This is it as of now.

The first part of the experiment will be to soak it in 6% solution Hydrogen Peroxide, i will observe it and take notes and photos over however long it sits in the solution. We want to see how much dye can be removed over what period of time, normally i would say because it is a light colour we would be able to get it back to white bone, but as the woman pointed out, because we don't know how long the dye has been in the bone this may not be achievable. So it may sit in the solution from a few days to up to a month, i have no idea, but i will keep replacing the 6% solution if and when it becomes inactive. We also want to observe what happens to the metal, one of my concerns with my knife was damage to the liners and backspring and pins with long term submerging in the solution. They did tarnish badly, but that was removed easily and they polished up really well.
The second part, and we will discuss this later, will be trying a re-dye project, but we will see what happens with the dye removal first. So anyone who reads this and would like to ask any questions, or has any suggestions or other input please join in, as i stated this is for everyone to maybe learn something on a subject with not much information out there, or worst, some misinformation. :)
And so it begins...

I like your dad's sayings Leon, and it seems he was full of good advice :) That was a good idea contacting that woman

You are right about those openers not being worth a cold pie mate! :D

Nice introduction, and I'm looking forward to seeing how your project progresses :)

Interesting. I imagine getting all the way back to white might be difficult, but lightening enough to take a darker dye job seems possible. I wonder if the hydrogen peroxide will dry out the bone.
A bit like a tattooists cover-up?! :D
Spoken like a true Californian!
LOL! :D When the subject came up, I immediately thought of you Vince! :D I'm glad you were tempted back! :D How are you keeping, hope all's well? :)

So sorry to hear that my friend, I hope you're as comfortable as you can be :( I really feel for you, and I'm sure your post has touched everyone here
It’s not awful that’s for sure, my daughter also had us substituting black beans for meat in Mexican dishes which is actually very good. 😊
Most of the chilli sold in pubs and restaurants here uses minced beef, and to be honest, if you substitute soya/TVP mince there really isn't a huge difference in flavour (certainly a lot less fat), which maybe says something about the quality of the minced beef! :D

Good morning Guardians, I hope your weekend is going OK, and that our friends in Canada have everything ready for Thanksgiving :) Hope you'll be posting a few pics of the festivities :) I've had a very quiet weekend, and I have a few things to do in the house today, but the sun is shining, so I'm going to try and get out at some point. I'm not sure how Lucy will feel about that, as she's out of her box today! Have a peaceful Sunday Guardians

It's a rough road to hoe to be sure. May you be comfortable as much as can be. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Anytime John! :)

Jack, I hope your Sunday is going well and that your weekend as a whole was a good one. Your Ironwood is beautifully figured; a real treasure.

Good morning Guardians and all from Coastal NC. Kind of a gray day but no rain yet. Got up this morning to shower and shave and had no hot water. Forgot I had turned off the gas in order to add some quick disconnects for my propane gas grill conversion over to natural gas. Re-lit the pilot and set the thermostat and presto! Hot water in a half hour. Not to worry - I followed the instructions to a "T". I had the little jingle in my mind as I was doing everything. It was a series of road signs that formed an advertisement for Burma Shave shave cream (now defunct product I think) many years ago. Went like this: "He lit a match...to check his gas tank...that's why...they call him...skinless Frank. For those of you who are too young to know, a skinless frank is a hot dog.
Anyway, my HHB thought it was funny.

I doubt we'll have many days, here in Yorkshire, this year, where you go can out for a walk in your shirt-sleeves, and not feel the cold, or the rain. I had plenty to do at home today, but as it's a bright, sunny day, it seemed criminal to waste it. I decided to catch a bus to the edge of Leeds, and walk 2-3 miles through the woods, with Lucy. Photographing her dazzling Ironwood, in the bright, low, sunshine proved difficult, but we had a nice walk, with a burger and a pint at the end of it ;)

Thank you, Jack. :)
anyone besides me reminded of the scene from Blazing Saddles?
Not until you mentioned it... thanks for that picture in my head. 🤣
Maybe if we say chilli and beans enough, Vince Prester John Prester John Prester John Prester John will come back again!
We can hope. 🤞

I recently posted some photos of a project that i had undertaken. A brief history, i had a Lambsfoot that i did not like from the moment i got it, the covers were cheap and plastic looking and far too thick at the end of the covers. I remember having an online chat with Dylan @Pàdruig about this very issue, he had the same problem in a different colour and if my memory serves me right he had his recovered. So i was going to try a recover with some wood i have that will sand smooth and polish up nicely, but was warned this my be too big a job for my first attempt, and may ruin the knife. I did not want to do that, the actual knife is easy to sharpen and keeps a good edge, so i was given some other options, this is what i did. First i sanded it right back and smoothed the jigging taking particular attention to the end, i ended up removing about 1/16 of an inch from each side, and it now sits and feels a lot better in the hand, and the sides run parallel to one another. I then soaked it in some hydrogen peroxide, this is the method advised to remove dye and whiten bone, good in theory, not so good in practice. I soaked the knife in a 3% solution for 48 hours, but only a certain amount came out, but more on the lighter side, so soaked it again for 24 hours in a 6% solution, not much difference, so i came to a conclusion, that this only works on light colours and only some success on dark colours. I did some research and found a woman online who does this for a living so i contacted her and she verified my conclusion, will only remove dye completely on light colours and also the length of time the dye has been in the bone, so an old knife will not release the dye so easily. I thought this my be useful information for those out there that contemplate this method in the future, if you ever do and want some help or advise please feel free to ask me, only to glad to help. When i contacted the woman i thought of my dad, he always said if you want to know how to try or do something, ask someone who does it for a living. Anyway, did not get the result i wanted, but a huge improvement on how it was, i will give an analogy, if i saw it how it was for the first time in a store behind the counter, would have had a quick glance and kept going, now, if i saw this in a second hand store or market stand i'm all over it.

Would love your input and opinions, good or bad, i take criticism very well, i'm used to it.
Looks like it is Ripening very well !!!! But still nicer than the First Time that I saw it . I will not in any way criticize what you have done . You are trying to fix an issue that you have . Answers to everything with a Solution to Nothing is not a good way to operate .

Thank you Jack. Forecast 92 degrees today, I’m ready for some cool weather. 😊
That's more than 20 degrees warmer than it was here Todd! :D

LOL! :D I don't know what state the interior is in now, but here are some photos from a few years back, it was like that a long time :(

Fantastic John, glad you were able to get out :) Looks wonderful, thanks for the great pics

I like em in bone too
I've been considering asking a custom maker to build one to the same dimensions as the big 2 blade stag example (4 1/4" closed) or maybe a 1/4" longer, that would put overall length around 7 1/2" ". It would make a handy little belt knife.

I think that is a great idea . What does that give you then of actual usable hand length then ??? Really like your Old Encore . Color of the bone , jigging , and worm grooves and all that other good stuff .

I'm glad I ate before meeting my pal, as it turned into a session ;) They called this a 'Texas Jack' a large hotdog, topped with pulled pork and cheese, chilli fries, and ginger beer

Thanks for keeping us on Page 1 guys, what's going on??!!! :D

Good morning Guardians, I had a very pleasant boozing session with my mate yesterday, sat outside the Duck & Drake in the sunshine, drinking ice-cold Newcastle Brown :) It's not often you get an October evening in Yorkshire, where you can sit comfortably outside in a T-shirt  Great to catch up with my pal, who tells me the long-handled slashers made the trip to Poland :D Sadly, it might be a while before I see him again, but not too long I hope

I hope you all made it through the week in one piece, and that you're enjoying the weekend :) I'm not sure I'll be going far today, as I'm not at my most sprightly ;) Have a good Saturday Guardians

Having a Double Lambsfoot Day! :) :D
