Thank you very much Kevin, it's from my hike on SaturdayLovely picture, Jack.
I love seeing that knife every time you post it.
It's a good deed that you are doing Jack. The HHB is looking very nice too.I've been dragooned into taking my elderly neighbours out for lunch at a restaurant some distance away. He's somewhat eccentric, to be polite, so we'll see how it goes. It's already turned into something of a drama![]()

Thank you, Jack.Nice ebony Lamb to start the week John
That is a really, really nice picture of your Hartshead, Jack... Love all the textures and colors.
I think you get the spectacular colours at first, then they eventually fade to grey. That's been my experience at least![]()
Thanks Bill, it took up most of my day, and most of my wallet, but I certainly won't have to cook tonight! It's a good deed that you are doing Jack. The HHB is looking very nice too.
I won't be chiming in for 3-4 days as I'm traveling north to visit my children for the Thanksgiving Holidays. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving week. Those that don't celebrate it have a great week. I'll be toting' my HHB all week.

Very true John
That's interesting BarrettI think you’re right. One interesting thing I’ve noticed: if you have a newly patinated knife, with those bright colors, and you apply some mineral oil to the blade, the colors almost instantly disappear. Wash the oil off (or carry it for a day or so) and the colors come back. But yeah, eventually they do fade to just grey(s), which I personally prefer.
I just cant get over how stunning patina can look in the right lights. All those beautiful colors.
I definitely love taking pictures of it and sharing them![]()
Wonderful photos Kevin, you don't get that with stainless!
That's why i prefer my blades to be carbon.![]()
I wonder if it will stay like that or turn a more uniform grey over time
I’m pretty sure that it will fade.
The changing nature of carbon steel is definitely one of the reasons I prefer it

Very interesting reading, in my experience everything expressed here is correct. I am no scientific expert when it comes to metal, but i do have a theory after more than half a century dealing with carbon steel blades, and these are only my observations, will stand corrected. When Patina forms on a new carbon steel blade, it can be a kaleidoscope of colours, which then fade to grey, this can be repeated till eventually it stops happening, my theory is, that it is like layer build up/protection. The more times it happens is like a new layer, which eventually gives good protection against rust and pitting. I have have pitting/rust form on carbon blades that have had patina start but then maybe not used for a while, but if you use it regularly and you get the layer effect, this gives much better protection, only my opinions, but it is definitely the use it or lose it principle. I have carbon blade knives that i have had for decades that i use regularly and the blades might get a wipe of oil once a year, a lot less than the joints, never have a problem with any sort of corrosion. Lambsfoot knives are working knives, and used regularly and kept dry will last a lifetime, carbon steel has a lot going for it, you don't get the character with stainless. There is my rant for the day fellow Guardians.. But yeah, eventually they do fade to just grey
