Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Good morning Gaurdians ! Thank you all for the kind words about the new Charlie Lamb, there were some very very nice Lamb Foot knives posted yesterday!

I just love these HHB , timeless !

It looks like your Barber is continuing a long standing tradition and helping preserve the past wether he knows it or not . Barbering is a dying trade in the States with cosmetology far surpassing us in numbers . But I guess if you live long enough you always outlive your purpose 🤷🏻‍♂️
Thank you, I wish I could have done more of those Barlows, as I intended to. I did get as far as the sample stage for a second run, but the quality was very poor I'm afraid :(

So many long-standing trades and professions are disappearing, or long gone already :( I always tip Brian at least as much again, as his prices are so low I don't know how he makes a living, particularly as he lives about 50 miles away. His shop is actually down some stairs beneath the market. In the past, there was a gents toilets situated at the bottom of the stairs. They closed a couple of decades ago, but Brian tells me that not a week goes by without someone asking him about them! :D The original closure sign was even older, saying that the toilets would be closed over Christmas, and open shortly thereafter, which never happened

My collections tend to be eccentric for some reason , along with old barbering trinkets I like vintage rulers , here are a couple of my favorites along with my Charlie Lamb!View attachment 1927153
Same here! :D I have a number of vintage rulers myself :) Several members of my family, including my grandmother and great grandmother worked for the Sheffield firm, James Chesterman, who were famed here for their rulers, tape measures, and other measuring instruments. That's a cool pic, I like the leather case  I have them scattered all over the house, but I'll see if I have one in my desk drawer for a pic ;)

Central toilet block!
Reminds me of Sussex Gardens International Students House!
That place wasn't much like its name, except for the foreign students.

I have an extra long day of church ahead of me. Time for me to "Arise, Arjuna, like an all-consuming fire".

LOL! :D I thought it sounded like something out of a high security prison! :D Go get 'em Jer! :)

Here we are Nankbrown21 Nankbrown21 :) I found these 3 in my desk drawer. The bottom rule is stainless, and made by Rabone of Birmingham, who amalgamated with Chesterman's in 1962. I don't usually collect their stuff, and didn't realise I had it. I think my pal, the Tool Man, must have foisted it on me! :D I like the small ones best, and always pick them up when I see them :)

Just having a coffee, and trying not to get blinded by the sun streaming onto my desk!

Looks like some fool is trying to re-brand these Ginger Nuts! o_O They are among an absolute staple here, and have been known as that since before my great grandfather was a boy, so what kind of idiot would want to lose that 'branding'? 🤨

Thanks Bill, I hope yours goes well too. The doctor didn't want to refer me for a scan as she thought it might lead to an operation, and suggested I purchase some over-the-counter ibuprofen for pain relief, in spite of the fact it causes my stomach to bleed, (and isn't particularly effective), so not a particularly helpful visit I'm afraid. On the plus side, she did tell me that I now have arthritis in my hip, and that I have some symptoms of concussion, (which I should 'keep an eye on').

Have a nice walk Bill, that's some great-looking stag in your pocket 👍

Tasties indeed! We call them ginger snaps over here.:) Love to eat them with an ice cold glass of milk. Your HHB is looking great.

Good morning Guardians. I'll be flying to Atlanta, then to Paris and then on to Warsaw tomorrow. Bus tour also includes Budapest, Vienna, Prague. Will more than likely be in touch only sporadically over the next two weeks so wishing everybody well now. Hope you all have happy trails.

Safe travels Bill. Have fun  ✈️ 🚌 🏖️

Hot on, or off the grill, John.
Yay! Food of the Gods!
Thanks guys. :)
It's a good thing I posted a "before" picture. My wife and I started talking about ideas for the remodel and the burgers got a little "well done" 🤣
Sure does look yummy, Jack. I love me a sausage sammich. 🤠
Nice knife !!
Thank you very much. :)
I hope you didn’t get hustled yesterday!
I'll be leaving for the tournament in a few hours... Hoping not to embarrass myself too much 🤠
They say I still throw like I am throwing shoes
I did the same thing last year, threw the same way I threw shoes.
This year I investigated proper corn hole technique and kind of melted the two styles together into something that isn't completely horrible. 😁
An old ruler collection isn't something you see every day, it's pretty cool. I'm betting money that our host Jack has more than one old ruler laying around. 🤠
Oh look, right on time and making me look like a genius. I knew you'd have several old rulers hanging around, my friend. 🤠
Arrrrrrrr... I always like seeing your Pirate Mug. 🤠

Good morning Guardians, I hope everyone is having a nice weekend :) I've still got that housework to do! :D Sticking with my Hartshead Barlow today :) Enjoy your Sunday Guardians

Your Barlow and factory image is first rate, mate.

If that knife could talk think of the stories it could tell! Would that be considered a blonde Buffalo horn ?
To paraphrase the great philosopher, Rod Stewart: “Every knife tells a story, don’t it.”

The horn haft has a blend of blond, brown, dark red, black(on the pile side), etc., depending on the light.

A great share of images and story of your Barber’s shop, Jack. Have a good productive, fun, yet restful day.

Bon Voyage and pleasant times, Bill.

Thank you Nank! 😊 It’s actually stag that I sanded and polished. 👍

Sometimes called that here too Bill, though usually referring to the larger ones, that look like granny just made them :) A very good combination :) I called round at my neighbour's shortly after posting, as they have just had a baby, and they were eating the very same ginger biscuits! :D Thank you for the kind words my friend

Thanks guys. :)

Oh no! There was a fire at my local fish and chip shop a week before the recent Carnival. They make a lot of money that weekend, so it was a lot of work to get the place back up and running. I just bumped into one of the guys who worked there, and he told me the owner forgot to turn off the huge oil-filled fryers before he went home for the night!

Great stuff :) You kick back my friend :)

After spending half an hour with my neighbours, and their new-born Ava, I offered to go and buy some paracetamol for the missus. I was also hoping to have a sandwich at Charlie's Cafe, but they were closing early for some reason, so I had to settle for a coffee, and a cheeseburger when I got back home ;)

Way cool Jack!! The problem I run into most times is that time hasn’t been good to these old relics , and they weren’t made from a stainless steel and are all rusted up and shut! But i have salvaged a few over the years! Love the case for your tri-fold !

So forgive my ignorance but would these be similar to a ginger snap?

We are heading up the road a piece this morning taking my 2 year old to an interactive children’s museum ….. let’s just hope he plays nice 😜😜

Many thanks Harvey, the bridge is Lady's Bridge, with surviving timbers dating to Henry VIII. It spans the River Don, and is close to its confluence with the lesser River Sheaf, and the original site of Sheffield Castle. Immediately beyond that, is the Exchange Brewery, where I worked as a teenager, it hadn't changed in appearance since that painting was done in the 19th century. In the distance you can see the conical chimneys of cementation furnaces, where blister steel was made. The hill running upwards, and to the left, above my knife, is Snigg Hill. I'm afraid I don't know what the large white building is, as it had been replaced by the time I was a kid, but it could be a factory of one of the Saynor knife makers, as they had a site at Scargill Croft, which is at the other side of that building
To paraphrase the great philosopher, Rod Stewart: “Every knife tells a story, don’t it.”

Thank you Jack. Question. I viewed a vid narrated by Stan Shaw about how he makes a knife. It was brilliant. I was mesmerized. I’m pretty sure you’ve seen it before. The knife he’s assembling is a pen knife, and I didn’t know how you would feel about me posting it here.

Thanks buddy, that's a shame to hear. So many were produced here, you inevitably see them fairly commonly, so commonly that if they are expensive and/or in poor condition, I don't bother. Those cases commonly have advertising for other companies (that one does, but I accidentally covered it up!)

Here's the back of the old Chesterman factory, Bow Works, abutting the small River Porter or Porter Brook. I grew up just up the road, so I am very familiar with it. I can remember walk along that path when I was 2 or 3 years old. It is now student accommodation.

I know the one you mean Harvey, in fact Stan gave me a copy on DVD. Perhaps it might work better in one of these threads? Post it here if you want though
