Bill, are your friends in Raleigh familiar with (the name of) Joseph Gales, the founder of
The Raleigh Register? He is a very famous Sheffielder, and would have known the Barlow family well, having his shop and office opposite their home in the Hartshead. Inspired by Thomas Paine, he founded
The Sheffield Register in 1787. He was eventually forced to flee state persecution, escaping to Germany, and then to America, where he finally settled in Raleigh, founding the town newspaper, which he continued to edit for 40 years. He died in Raleigh on the 24th August 1841, at the grand old age of 80. His youngest son, born in North Carolina, succeeded him as editor. His elder son was also a journalist, joining the
National Intelligencer, in Washington, in 1808, eventually passing away in 1860. If your friends don't know of Gales, he is well worth researching
