It's nice to have a beautiful companion.
Congrats to your friend, Jack!![]()
Been a bit of a spell since I've posted here. Things are going at a pace that I can barely manage to keep up with.
Taking a moment to slow down a bit and enjoy some finer things. The AC has been a pretty constant companion.

Morning all! Ron that is a super cool handle. Looks like smooth elk?Good morning Guardians!
Thanks Dwight! It’s actually Pere David’s Stag. While not as colorful or as textured as Sambar it is probably more plentiful in Europe. I have two Lambsfoot examples with this Stag and it appears to be a durable handle material. I’m sure Jack can give more details for us.Morning all! Ron that is a super cool handle. Well, I'm very happy with the "vintage stag"! Stag and jigged bone are my favorite cover materials, and the AC knife is gorgeous. The Indian Government's export ban on sambar hit the Sheffield cutlers some years ago now, and they have struggled to get hold of a decent replacement. Arguably, with a little more thought and ingenuity, they might have found an alternative source for sambar, as the replacement stag has been inferior. It was only after a few years of having to use some very characterless stag that Wright's were able to source quantities of Pere David. It is durable, and does have some character, but given a choice, I think most folks would favour sambar. The sambar used for the Ashley's Choice knives was vintage stag, which had originally been cut for table cutlery hafts (eg steak knives)![]()

Thanks Jack for explaining it. No doubt if one was expecting Sambar stag the Pere David would be a disappointment. However the two are so disparate it almost seems like apples and oranges. I find Ron's Pere David to be strikingly beautiful in it's own right. I am very partial to smooth bone and with the random markings on Ron's reminds me of walrus tusk. The Indian Government's export ban on sambar hit the Sheffield cutlers some years ago now, and they have struggled to get hold of a decent replacement. Thanks for that info Jack! While stag is stag, I definitely prefer the Sambar, especially the vintage Sambar that is on the Ashley’s Choice!
