Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Hello Jack ,
Thanks for the pictures.
This place is beautiful 😍

Something I've never previously noticed about Whitby is the number of dogs in the town. It seems almost every visitor, and many residents, have at least one, and some walk about with 4 or 5. Towards the bottom of Skinner Street is an antique/junk shop, which is run by a particularly miserable old man. I called in briefly, but he had no knives. I turned left into an even steeper street, Flowergate, and called in several more similar shops, as well as an army surplus shop. I even met an old reader of one of the magazines I used to write for :)

Following the street all the way down to the bottom of the hill, I eventually reached the harbour, and the swing-bridge, which separates to the two parts of Whitby from one another.
And what a sign of civilisation.
Here in France the dogs are less and less accepted (and their owners less and less responsible).
The place you show seems to be perfect for both 🥳

Where would we be without dogs and horses (and lambs...)?

Nowhere good, that's for certain!!

Congratulations to the GAW winners and Bob that was super generous.

Jack - thanks for sharing your trip commentary and photos.

Flew into Gulfport, Mississippi today for a work conference. Here is a picture of the barrier islands. The flight path took us out over the Gulf before returning for our landing approach.

I had a great plate for dinner. Red fish & Shrimp. I cleaned that plate! Big horn lamb attended.

Thank you Pete, I have some more pics to post, but will probably leave it until tomorrow now. Your photos are incredible  It's nice to see you're being looked after ;)
Nice pictures Jack and your writing as well !
Thank you Steve :)
Ditto this!

I love that movie, as I may have mentioned before in passing..

I was surprised it wasn't better known, still a great movie in my opinion, and I think you can watch the whole thing on YT (I'll just post a trailer ;) )

Evening Guardians! Jack thank you for the pics and narrative of your trip. Whitby looks like beautiful town. That gull on Captain Cook head would have made a good object of attention for your catapult.

A pleasure David, shooting gulls off Captain Cook's head would be a great job! :D Unfortunately, I had no opportunity to use my slingshot over the weekend :( Next time ;)
Yeah they come as a kit?
300!? That's like $584 in our money!😥
Jb Lamb & komperdell made in Austria,View attachment 2280464View attachment 2280467 with cork handle & aluminium, super light. It can be used as a t handled walking stick or extended out & used as traditional hiking pole. Has the modern equivalent of Jack's alpine tip, tungsten carbide for off road.
A bit pricey, but they do come as a kit, and in various different sizes :) I've found that the rubber can work loose though, so I use a drop of Threadlock
Yeah, and I got very little for it :( I noticed a flyer for the place I put in my pocket, raving about their fantastic breakfasts, and there fresh bean coffee machine "available to guests all day." I have no issue with the owners taking a break themselves, but either close the place, or get a temporary manager in

I have a couple of Lekis I have had 30 years, with tips like that Mitch, but they don't get much use these days. I was a primary proponent here in advocating a pair of poles , and a much shorter ice-axe, which has caught on, but I don't get up many mountains anymore, and prefer a a wooden staff for the woods. I imagine that cork grip absorbs some shock :)
Sorry I missed the gaw Rufus1949 Rufus1949 Joining you on the Jersey shore this week.

Jack Black Jack Black thanks for sharing your trip and pics!
Thank you Kevin, and once again, my apologies for what has transpired here :(
Classic pic Vince :)
Thank you kindly Vince. I am glad to pass on my good fortune.👍🏻
Be well.
You are very kind Bob :)
Chop! Chop! Mike :D
Thank you everyone for putting up with my GAW and participating. Lessons learned. Enjoy your day.

Is that a new one Bob, I can't keep up? :D Either way, it's beautiful :)

According to my 2nd ed New Webster's Internat'l unabridged, Lambsfoot is a name for common plantain.
Fascinating Jer
Good morning Guardians !

Carrying Spalty today 👍

Very handsome :)
I do hope a recovery is in the future....very sad indeed Jack.
Sadly, it seems unlikely Bob, but I haven't given up yet

Thank you Jean-Marc, I wish it were as quiet as it was 40 years ago, when I first started visiting :) I wasn't even photographing the dogs, but they bombed my photo! :D There was a beauty in The Black Horse, a Pyrenean Mountain Dog :)

Thank you Jack.
This one arrived late last night. Another fine example of his craftsmanship.

Is there a trip to the market tomorrow?

Congratulations my friend, I do like the form of his Lambsfoot blades, as well as the exciting beauty of the knives overall :) Yes, I will be going to the market, but probably spending less time there than usual

Jack that is terrible, you are right, they should have closed, if you can't provide full service don't charge full price😠 money is tight for everyone.
my komperdell is only about 15 years old. 2 poles are good for off road. though I can't hold a full size staff in my off hand no wrist plated & fussed. Not that I go bush much these days.
Cork is good, still used on modern sticks as it is light, non slip when wet & apparently antibacterial which surprised me.
Have a good day Jack

JM you could be right, I was intrigued by this story. Probably not the best use for funds.

Jack Black Jack Black thanks for the pictures of your trip that you’ve posted so far. Sorry it didn’t go as planned, but I hope you were at least able to enjoy yourself a bit. And hey, even lousy trips can make for good stories. 😉😁

Despite my irritation, I decided to put it to the back of my mind until I could address it directly, which I knew I would get the chance to do.

I’m looking forward to the photo of you with Tool Man in a headlock. 🤣

I carried my bags up the stairs, and entered the smallest hotel room I have ever seen! Most of the room was the width of the door, the rest, slightly larger than the single bed provided. There wasn't even a chair! The bathroom was tiny, with the sink about the size of one of my hands 😳

hSO8UzV.jpg

That is an impressively small hotel room! 😲 Looks like it’s not far from being one of those Japanese capsule hotels.

Thank you Daniel  Kevin seas165 seas165 very thoughtfully sent me a lovely Joseph Elliot Sheldon Lambsfoot. The kind gift was a surprise, so I was only aware of this last night, and subsequently learned that a thief had intercepted the package. I can't say too much on an open forum, but I have been up all night, and busy all day, trying to get to the bottom of the matter. It's really saddened me that such a generous gesture should have been affected by such a low move :(

Sorry to hear that, Jack. 🙁

An author I like, Michael Chabon, recently spent a month or so in Paris. He had his dog with him, and posted occasionally on Instagram about some of the peculiarities of French dog ownership, such as dogs being allowed in most cafés, but prohibited from most parks.

My 1st give away...forgive any bumps in the road.
On Tuesday, August 8th I will be giving these lambs away. First name out of hat gets 2 knives. 2-4 names get 1 each. All will be notified in order of draw. I do not want to tie up the thread, so on that day, simply say "I'm in" if interested.
Some will see them as beaters to save their good one, others who are new, to embellish their flock.
SEE YOU TUESDAY. 5:00 am EST- 5pm EST. when I pull names.View attachment 2274423
Mitch & Leon you are eligible.

Back to normal programming now.
This was extremely generous of you - well done and thank you for being such a true salt of the Guardians & Traditionals, Just amazing.

So a massive thank you and also congratulations on the winners - have a awesome day everyone!

Very nice of you to say Duncan. 👍🏻I guess it was a thank you for all the camaraderie shared amongst the members.🤝

yes, there are so many great people here in the Guardians, that was awesome- well done :)

Amazing photo's Jack, Sue and I are coming back over- oh probably within a years time- I would love to catch up with you then - so we will be in touch my friend.

Whitby looks lovely! I am sorry about some of the traveling troubles.

Take Care Jack and Guardians! Have a lovely day everyone!

A couple years back, when I still worked in person, I would routinely come home looking forward to opening a package whose delivery I'd been notified about - only to find that it had already been plundered by porch pirates.

My solution, taking a cue from the tactics of NYC residents during one of their prolonged garbage strikes, was to fill empty Amazon boxes with all the old kitchen trash, dog droppings, and whatever other unpleasantness I could find, tape them up, and leave them on the front steps as i was heading out in the morning. I do hope the bandits enjoyed their filthy lucre.

I regret missing the Yorkshire Day festivities, but I belatedly submit this M. May lamb covered in Yorkshire Oak. It's not the most refined Lamb in my collection but it's stout, solid, and feels like it was made to be a worker which, if I understand correctly, fits with the intended spirit of the design.
