That's bad![]()
That was particularly the case with the steel workers Barrett, who worked shifts. The steel works were surrounded by small pubs, which were empty a lot of the time, as the local housing had gone years before. About 8.30pm, they'd start pulling pints, which if you didn't know what was going on, was very confusing. The pints would be lined up all over the bar, the nearby tables, on top of the piano, everywhere a space could be found. They'd keep pulling pints until 10pm, when the 'afternoon' shift finished, and hundreds of steel workers would race to the nearest pub. In those days, pubs had to call 'Time!' at 10.30pm, and legally, there was only 10 minutes 'drinking up time', Each man would pour the first pint straight down, and probably half the second, and take as many glasses as he could carry, hoping that 'like any good landlord', 10 minutes could be stretched to twenty![]()

Thank you my friendThey were actually taken with the mirrorless Canon EOS M-200 I bought last year. I did upgrade it, but had to return the replacement. However, I purchased a 22mm prime lens, which is a lot better, for those kind of shots, than the stock lens

I figured Eleanor for a bit of a toughie!Matt's daughter, Rheia, has been poorly today, and is such a drama queen!
Her mum was hanging out some washing to dry, and as Rheia was sat next to the window, she asked her let her know if it started raining, while she was making lunch. "But mummy, I CAN'T look out of the window!" came the reply, in a voice which I suspect most parents have heard at some point!

You too mateWhile I think that scale looks rather cool, what happened? I sure hope it didn't arrive like that!
![]()
Hope Eleanor keeps up with the cream on her ears, I have seen my two girls and StepDaughter go through this- Kelsey also with hey Tummy Button piercing
Love that Harts Head - gorgeous!
Grinderman strikes again!Yikes !
It was SteveSounds like a good day !
A beautiful bonus
Such a shame what happened with those companiesJack, as you know, Richards acquired the Rodgers/Wostenholm company in 1975, which was then acquired by the Imperial Knife Co. in 1977.
I have several Richards factory catalogs from the 1950s through the 1980s and none show a Lamb Foot knife. So I doubt that the late model Wostenholm Lamb Foot knife I had shown was made by Richards.
Enclosed is a catalog illustration from a 1982 Wostenholm catalog showing what I believe is that same model. Sadly, like their knives, the quality of their catalogs and illustrations was also less than spectacular in later years.

I wonder where they all ended up?It's been a while, hasn't it.![]()
Good grief! I didn't know that Leon! When i was a kid, up untill 1966, we had 6.00PM closing in pubs. They called it the 6 O'CLOCK swill, and for good reason. It was a bunfight..
Jb lamb still.

Cool pic Jer
You do like your tomatoes Mitch!
That's terrible Barrett! While comparing it to that odd knife you shared is, admittedly, an exaggeration, it certainly wasn’t good. Not only was the edge not straight, but the blade had no swedge at all, it had a shallow nail nick, and the tang stamp was poorly struck.
![]()
No, particularly in the summer!I’d forgotten that they only had a short time to drink up, too.I wouldn’t be too keen on getting one of the pints that had been pulled an hour and a half before I got there. And how on earth did they make sure folks had paid for the number of pints they drank?!
Thank you Barrett, the 22mm lens should be handy for a number of things. I used it a fair bit for landscapes on Lanzarote tooWell it definitely takes some nice portrait shots. My only camera is the one on my iPhone, and it’s great for a lot of things, but you can’t get that shallow depth of field that make portraits like that look so good. (There is a “portrait mode” that mimics it with a digital effect, and while the results are ok, it’s obviously not as good as the real thing when you take more than a cursory glance.)
AwwYeah, unfortunately Eleanor can be a bit like that, too, when she’s not feeling well or something hurts.
I'm almost certain I've never seen it mate, it must have been one of the first knives sent out, before I realised that I'd been lied to about them all being thoroughly checked, before being sealed in plastic. I also like the character, but I wouldn't have knowingly sent it out like that, anymore than I'd have sent out this one, which fortunately, was not among the firstIt’s been like that since I got it. I thought I had a picture of the pile side somewhere from when it first arrived — a picture I would have taken because I like the character it gives the knife! — but I couldn’t find it.
Thanks palI love both of the HHBs, it’d be hard to pick a favorite.

Such a shame what happened with those companiesOf course, the quality of their knives was in decline long before the Richards and Imperial acquisitions, but Rodgers-Wostenholm were still taking on apprentices until 1979, before they moved to Moore Street, when things seem to have worsened dramatically. Everyone knew that they were more or less finished, the apprentices weren't being properly trained, pay was at rock-bottom, and folks were looking for other jobs. I doubt they cared much about what they produced. I remember my brother-in-law being there, but one of Wright's recently retired cutlers was there too, and he was still bitter about it. No, I don't think Richards ever made a Lambsfoot, I have certainly never seen one. By the time they acquired Rodgers-Wostenholm, their own sales would also have been severely affected, it was many years since their colourful displays could be found in every newsagent and hardware store
That catalogue looks vaguely familiar, I might have even seen it at some point, but it is certainly a long cry from the ones produced when they were one of the world's finest cutlery companies!
If I had had the sense, and hadn't been more interested in stuff like girls, and beer, and motorbikes, that would have been the time to be collecting cutlery ephemera, because they were, literally, just throwing it away

I wonder where they all ended up?
![]()
Good grief! I didn't know that Leon!It must have been crazy!
It's only a few years since they relaxed the drinking laws here, and there were many predictions about the mayhem and lawlessness it would cause. I remember going up to the pub, with a neighbour, after 11pm, on the second night pubs could serve until midnight if they wanted, just for the novelty really, and there was only one other customer in!
It was a lot better than the days when all the pubs kicked out just after 10.30pm, with folks having necked the last 2 pints in the preceding 10 minutes, and there was nothing to do apart from have a punch-up!

Hopefully, you have more civilized boozing hours now my friend

That's terrible Barrett! There seemed to be a particularly bad period, when it was hard to find a knife that was even half-decent from the factory
I remember making several trips to different Yorkshire hardware stores, and going through their stock, and not being able to find a single knife I would buy
No, particularly in the summer! To a large extent, they must have had to rely on honesty I think. In those days tills were just a drawer under the bar in most pubs. Mind you, I've heard it said that an experienced landlord would notice if his takings varied by as little as £5!

Thank you Barrett, the 22mm lens should be handy for a number of things. I used it a fair bit for landscapes on Lanzarote tooThe problem with portraits is that folks are used to phone pics, and don't have much of an attention span anymore. They can no longer just stand still for a second, but have to keep moving about, or changing their facial expression, or look somewhere else!
Boring Ray, from the market, is a nightmare. He crashes every pic with a stupid expression, has his eyes closed on 95% of them, and is so WHITE, he affects the colour balance and lighting!
I am amazed at the photos people take on their phones, they are really incredible

Thanks Duncan. My favorite knife.Oh man - Love this!
Real dandy Dwight!
Wow Dwight… just wow!
Thanks fellows!Sweet picture Dwight
Thanks mate!Stunning photo Dwight, just incredible!
Love those hammers! Long live Lucy! The three hammers on the left were made by an old friend from the market, Les. Les was a Tackler in a cloth mill, a very intelligent bloke. He passed away 'in the Covid times' sadly, but rode his Vincents and Velocettes into his 80'sDon't worry Lucy, stake is not on the menu
Very interesting Neal. Thanks Jack and echcoscout, and good to hear that Rufus1949 and Joefairbanks signed up for the magazine.
Hopefully you will be able to access some of the previous articles online that Jack was involved with which were very interesting.
As a small teaser, this next article in "Knife Magazine" will show the oldest known example of a Lamb Foot knife.
Enclosed is a picture of one of the last Lamb Foot knives to be offered by the original Wostenholm company.
As Jack has mentioned several times, the Sheffield cutlery industry was sadly on a steep decline following WWII, and was mostly dead by the 1980s.
Wostenholm and Joseph Rodgers had merged in 1971, but that was not enough to save either company and together had gone bankrupt by 1983.

Love the stag on this rig.I have been carrying one knife, which is a bit unusual ... And even more unusual is that it's a case stockman. It's been hogging the show.
Between work and life I've been pretty busy and haven't really thought about it but I tossed big soupy into the side pocket of my carpenter jeans today to get some lambsfoot action this weekend.
This is one of those knives I'll keep till the wheels fall off.

Great pics Jack! Is Sara their daughter? Was that before or after they were acquired by Richards mate? I have a Wostenholm Barlow Lambsfoot, with the same covers, and unlike that one, it is a sorry piece indeed (I might never have shown it)After Meteor acquired everything, they took loads and loads of stock out of the Richards factory, along with everything else. Much was sold off, but I wonder if anything was left, such as parts, when Eggington acquired the name. When the Rodgers-Wostenholm cutlers had to move into the Richards factory, they were so unhappy that they threw tray after tray of old blade stock, out through the windows of the factory, and into the River Sheaf below!
Sounds hectic Rick! I hope you get to put your feet up this weekend, and enjoy Soupy![]()
Fabulous photo buddy![]()
An old friend of mine became headmaster of a small rural school, and the retiring headmaster presented him with a weighted and brass-capped Victorian policeman's truncheon, and a heavy set of brass-knuckles!They had originally been given to the school's first headmaster by the police, to defend himself against the pupils!
The eldest child to attend the school then would have been aged 10!
He is a bit boring! He has an adopted son, Michael, who is stupid, lazy, and smells badly. Tool Man can't stand him, but he's banned from the market for a year, for swearing at a customer!
Years ago, they had the stall next to Tool Man, and would constantly argue, and regularly come to blows!
So, not entirely boring!
Great to see one of the 18's John![]()
Nice to see Rose Beast too Jer![]()
Congratulations my friend, two smashers thereI could have sent you this one!

Thanks Steve, at least I haven't missed anything with the weather, the wind has been howling away all day, and it has been raining tooHave a good day Jack !
Sorry to hear this Bill, I hope you're back to full speed soonGood morning Guardians. It's a fine Sunday here in NC. A little chilly but sunny. Found out that the computer problems/printer/mesh router problems will have to wait until Monday. My computer geek says he will need to have a lot of time to fix things. My computer still functions but has slowed a little despite my best efforts. One bright spot for me is that I'll be carrying my HHB.

Thanks DwightThanks mate!
Love those hammers! Long live Lucy!
No Dwight, it's just coincidental. Sara is Hisham's brother, Nabil's, wife. Her dad was Italian, and her mom lives in the Dominican Republic (I think she is FROM there). You may remember she visited a few months ago, though I don't think I posted a photo. Anna, and her husband Fabrizio, who was camera-shy, are both Italian, from Florence, where Sara also grew up. Hisham is pretty well-travelled too, he has a young boy, Ryan, who everyone adoresGreat pics Jack! Is Sara their daughter?
