Even with the back-lighting, I should have recognized that bolster groove as characteristic of the ironwood, not the ebony.
My wife is a big fan of putting stuff "in a safe place", but then she often can't remember where the "safe place" was. It doesn't help that she has so many "safe places" that she can't remember them all. Seems like a "safe place" policy would work best with just ONE place.

Here's mark side and pile side pics of Valley Jack in April of 2020. Maybe the wood is starting to darken, but it may just be the difference between photos taken on sunny days in 2019 and a cloudy day in 2020?

Thanks GT! Not sure if Valley Jack is darkening there but maybe it has more of the lighter grain so will hold out longer?

That's my problem too -- too many "safe" places...
