Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

A few days ago, I received a message from @Hatchet_Jack , asking me about the origins of the Hartshead Barlow. I referred him to the search facility and to the Thread Index, linked to from post 1, but realised that recent changes to the search function make finding information posted that far back difficult. I still get messages fairly regularly about their knives, so here's a little about their origins, for those who don't know.

I produced a number of SFOs for the Guardians, which were not only non-profit, they were actually subsidised, so that folks could get hold of a good quality Lambsfoot at a reasonable price. The Hartshead Barlow was produced, in Sheffield, in 2019, and made available to Guardians via my email list. The following is taken from the first email I sent out:

Presenting The Hartshead Barlow!

In the year 1654, a young lad, no more than a child, came to Sheffield from nearby Rotherham, to commence an apprenticeship with cutler John Courtnall. After thirteen years learning the trade, the young man registered his ‘freedom’, and mark, with the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. His name was Obadiah Barlow, and he and his descendants would give their name to the most famous pocket knife pattern in history. Obadiah set up his home and workshop in the small Hartshead district of Sheffield, close to the parish church, where knives were produced that are still talked about today. Some of the earliest Barlow knives had a blade shape very similar to what would later become known as the Lambsfoot, but the Lambsfoot did not evolve as a distinct blade shape until the latter half of the 19th century. The popularity of this versatile blade soon grew, and no later than the early 20th century, it was married to the Barlow knife, becoming a mainstay of Sheffield cutlers.

...The knives have been handmade by a single cutler, using traditional Sheffield cutlery methods. They are built on a straight ‘Candle-end’ frame, with a steel Barlow bolster, stamped both sides with the ‘AW&S’ mark, steel liners, and a swaged Lambsfoot blade, bearing a ‘Hartshead Barlow’ etch. Covers are either Rosewood or vintage Sambar Stag.

The knives are accompanied by a handmade pocket-slip made from vintage Yorkshire woollen cloth, produced between the two World Wars. There is also a special button/pin/badge. The knife and accessories are housed in a quality re-useable stainless steel tin.

For historical reasons, I'll give the original prices, which were £58 for the Rosewood model, and £77 for the Stag

In total, 21 were made with Rosewood covers, and 77 with Sambar stag. There were also 2 additional knives, with a file-worked back-spring, one of which I have.

I had hoped to produce further Hartshead Barlow runs, but unfortunately that was made impossible.

Great review of the HHB history. 👍
A quick visit...bachelorhood is over!! Honey do's today.
Thanks for historical background Jack.

Such unusual wood. Is the surface smooth or can you feel the grain?

Good morning Guardians, I hope everyone is keeping well, and looking forward to the weekend. It seems like it's going to be an exciting one for many of you folks :) I'm going to be working all day today, but I'm hoping I get finished by the evening, so I've got a bit of time to myself ;) Thought I'd carry my first Albers Lamb :) Have a good one Guardians :)

Morning Jack. Lovely Albers 🐑 👍🤠

Nice covers on that 🐑👍🤠 Stay frosty!
Good day Guardians! Hope y'all have a great weekend! Sounds like at least some of our Aussie brothers enjoyed the footy. I don't follow so can offer nothing of substance lol. Here's my 2019 SFO ironwood again.

Found a "distressed" leather sheath for her. With everything else in RFP (Case 75 stockman and 131 Canoe this month, mebby longer) I don't want to carry the lamb loose in that pocket.

Wrong (if it ain't "right" it must be "wrong".🙄) wrist issue prevents carrying most things in LFP/LRP. Call button on a tether is about the only thing I can carry in LFP.

I have had the lamb on me every day since it arrived. 😁👍

Hope everyone has a gr8 weekend.

I know that I'm odd but stag isn't my first choice for personal carry. That said, I do admire great stag and that 'un is sweet!

Hi Dwight.
This is a very smooth finish.

A prejudice like towards that lamb.😍
May I ask if modeling is another of your hobbies?
Thanks Bob. If you are asking if I "build" these rigs, no I don't. They are all metal die cast. I do find the modeling fascinating and watch a lot of em being built.
Quite a rig 🚛 🐑👍🤠 Have a good one.
Thanks David, you too my friend. Beautiful weather here as well. :)

Thanks Michael. Have a great weekend.

Evening all
Cooked steak sangas after the footy
& we won❤️❤️❤️❤️🥰

Congratulations Mitch! 🥳 Nice result at the footy too! 😁👍
Thanks for resharing the info Jack.
A pleasure Mitch, hopefully it will be more accessible on a search now 👍

Yikes! 🤣 That's a beauty 😊 If you search on my posts within Charlie's Barlow thread, you will hopefully find some more info about both the Hartshead, and about Barlow history 👍
Beauty !

Thanks for the history of the HHB !
Thank you Steve, I always forget there are newer owners of the Hartshead Barlow, who didn't get all the history the first time round 👍
Thanks for the multiple SFO's and pre/post influence you've had Jack! The HHB was too good for its own good (well okay, the other party was too short-sighted among other things not appropriate here).

Cool map! Hope that your honey-do's land you at a sweet spot!
Thank you my friend, seems a long time ago now 🙄👍

Me neither, but that is a great pic! 😂 Cool pocket watch 🙂 Tool Man buys cheap Ruskie type quartz pocket watches from eBay. He insists they are the best watches money can buy. They come with various tacky designs embossed on the back. He was trying to persuade me I should buy one, and when I told him what I thought about the tacky designs, he told me there was one with wolves on, as if that was absolute class! 😁 I said, "Those aren't wolves, they're Alsatians (German Shepherds). When me and Tool Man were young, 'Alsatian' dogs were de rigeur with the sort of people who later progressed to pit-bulls and smoking a substance that rhymes with back. Since, the classic run-down housing project in Leeds is Gipton, I dubbed the watch 'The Gipton Special'! 🤣 I know Tool Man hates me saying this, so every time he is showing somebody his watch, I ask, "Is that The Gipton Special?" Just to see him wince! I then add a line of "The Gipton Special's coming down the line..." Tool Man hates it, which of course makes it all the more amusing!! 🤣🤣👍
Thank you mate, always appreciate your knowledge.
No worries Jack, I spent about 2 years doing that research! 😁
Great review of the HHB history. 👍
Thanks Dwight, that's it in a nutshell ;)

Ahoy Guardians! Trimming the tree in my front yard has really taken it out of me, so I'm taking a couple days off and resting up with two new additions to the permanent collection: An incredible slip from our very own sbh06 sbh06 and a stainless TEW lamb wearing rugged Bexoid pants from our also very own Señor Jack Black Jack Black - both part of the lucre received from winning Jack's 5000-page-lambfootery extravaganza!

My dad and his GF flew to Quebec to catch a cruise down the North American continent's eastern coast, which has tagged me in for cat-feeding duties. Before you get all excited, there aren't any cat pics, and my dad's cat "Glammy" looks pretty rangy even on her best day - not very photogenic as far as cats go.

What my dad and his GF do have, in lieu of a photogenic cat, are the home decor and design sensibilities of a commune of mystic, new-age, incorrigibly metaphysical yet financially comfortable, hippies - so I used some of their stuff as props. Since I'm not being compensated for feeding the cat, I'll chalk the photographic liberties up as my fee.

I've had it for over a year and posted it many times. It's an Albert Oates Current Lamb, I got it from a seller in England.

Thank you David and Jack! 🩸🐑 is out and about this week. 👍🏻👍🏻
