Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

I received this yesterday, hot off the Lulu press, the newly published companion volume to Geoff Tweedale's classic reference work on the Sheffield cutlery manufacturers. Geoff has been working on this work on the Sheffield tool manufacturers for a few years now, and it is equally well-researched - more than 600 pages and thousands of illustrations and photographs. I'm looking forward to reading it, and am sure it'll be an invaluable reference work

I hope that a few of you remember Arthur, the Right Lambsfoot Greg @WhittlinAway whittled for me a while back...

He sits on my desk, but I have been thinking about sending him on a journey in the style of Earl and Pearl. He's very dear to me, so I would only want him to go to stay with Guardians of Good-standing who've been on The Porch awhile. What do you think folks, anyone up for this, maybe have a prize for the post that gets the most likes?
Let me know how the book treats you, Jack. Always looking for new references. Also, I don’t ever remember this little creature being mentioned. Funny thing must have been before my time.

Will do, if you dig about in the thread index, you'll not only find a few links to pics of Arthur, but to a list of cutlery resources, many of which can be read online for free or downloaded as PDF files

Me too mate :) Do you know, I'd forgotten about the Yorkshire Rose, isn't that shocking, my memory isn't worth tuppence these days, but I'm usually OK with knife stuff? o_O

I've been seeing a fair bit of Bolton this past few days courtesy of some old Fred Dibnah videos! :D I shared one with Frank @knarfeng, and he was saying he works with a bloke from round your way! :) (I'll just stick a link in for our friends )

Very interesting photos my friend, and you are right about those eggs! o_O

I've read a couple of his books; still got one actually. A very interesting read about our industrial heritage. He was apparently a really decent chap to boot.

Mostly Sunny here Boys

Kevin, it has been a very mild winter, there have been reports that a Grizzley or two have been spotted wandering around. They should be sleeping! :D
You have captured another fine photo very nice.

That's a stunning shot there Dave! It's just been a normal winter here (though our Lake District National Park has been remarkably snow free) but didn't you have early snows?

Yeah well I guess it's been awhile since I was hitting on all cylinders too. Shoulder surgery coming up here in a few days.
So Trevor Ablett - a custom builder?

Good luck with the surgery

I know the feeling my friend, good luck with your surgery

Trevor Ablett was for many years just a jobbing cutler, but then he started adding his name to his knives. The blades came from Wright's, and didn't sell for much more than their knives. His signature was brass bolsters, often extended. Sadly, he died of cancer a couple of years ago, but he worked almost to the end. This poignant photo was taken on his last day at work, in the workshop he shared with Bowie Knife Maker Reg Wilson.

I have one his Barlow's and very nice it is to. (I also have a Reg Cooper bowie).
I did a search for the video of when Michael Portillo visited him and Reg on his "Great British Railway Journey's" which I know I came across somewhere on'th t'intaweb but now can't find. Apparently it's in Series 2 in 2011. But there's links to 3 videos featuring Trevor Ablett on this website.

Just enjoying a night cap :)

David, we had a major snowstorm in September and that was it. Since then there has been very little snow and a lot of the day temps in Calgary have reached +10C
Today is the first time I believe that the daytime high is below at -8 C

Jack Black Jack Black ... sorry I'm rather late to the party, kind of lost track of this thread lately and just tried to do some catch up. The 2019 Guardians sample looks amazing, is there still a way to get on your email list for more details?

A very interesting discovery indeed! I have seen many Winchester Lambsfoot knives with the checkerboard covers on the big auction site. They are usual red or blue with white checkered covers. I assumed they were synthetic possibly even celluloid. I always assumed they were contracted from some English manufacturers. Looking at the tang stamps they do look suspicious. Hopefully someone here can come up with the true story on this knife.

Speaking of contract knives, I’m giving this one some pocket time today. :)

Purtty knife!

I still need to take the time to work through this thread, but I have much the same question. I didn't know that there was such a thing as a Guardians knife, and would love to get in on the action. I'm glad the subject came up in the forum knife thread, because now I know to look here and start participating on this thread. :)

Good Morning Guardians! A couple weeks back I was complaining about a really sore knee. Forgive me but I don't remember who recommended the book Somatics, then again it might have been
peanutsxx :confused::thumbsup:
The library brought it in for me. I will admit reading and following through with this sort of thing is like pulling a cat through a picket fence.;)
I will give it a go, the real motivation is the pain I'm dealing with and just maybe I will get some relief.

Yes, he comes across as a smashing bloke David  I'm not surprised that he was married three times though  :D

Good luck in terms of catching up Matt. You just need to let me have an email address ;) Easiest way is to invest in a paid membership (start from $30 a year), and send me a PM. Alternatively, you could post your email address here, but obviously that comes with risks

Hope the book helps Dave, and that you get some relief soon my friend  That's a great pic, I don't think I've ever seen anyone looking so pleased with a Lambsfoot knife! :D Of course, that's how I start my days at Lambsfoot Towers ;) :D

Morning folks, I thought I'd slip the 2019 sample in my pocket today :) Have a great day folks

Hope the book does you well, mate. Time is the enemy of all sentient beings, but we all have our ways of putting it off or dealing with it. Except certain sea creatures if my memory serves me right. Those lads can be pretty stubborn.

That's a gorgeous knife!
Here is my only lambsfoot, a nice 32 Dumas Aîné that I found at a flea market a few years ago. An awesome knife for many tasks - too short for eating though, I rather use my Douk-Douk for that ;)

That's a lovely knife, but I'm afraid it's not a Lambsfoot. The Lambsfoot not only has a straight edge, but the spine and edge are not parallel. If you go the thread index, linked to in post , you'll find lots of discussion on the subject
