Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

A good example, because half of Yorkshire pronounces it differently to the rest of the country! :D Up the road from me, there's a stately home called Harewood House. The resident toff insists it is pronounced 'Har'wood', but he's almost entirely alone in that pretension! :D

To be fair, Minnesota has quite a few place names where the pronunciation makes little sense. There’s Wayzata (why-ZET-uh), New Prague (New PRAYg), Mahtomedi (mah-toe-MEE-die), to name a few.

Yes, the vast majority of Sheffield factory owners have been a rotten a lot. Leeds has some beautiful architecture, because textile merchants gave back to the city. The cutlery magnates in Sheffield were a mean bunch

Wasn’t there one guy they made up a (rather unflattering) song about? 😁

Beautiful feathered horn on your '17 Jack. Have a good romp over at Bradford. My wife and I are romping all over SW Florida today for doctor visits in several different places. At least we'll probably eat lunch at some place different. Gonna carry Berry today.

Love seeing that one! 😀

Quite a group there! 😎

Very happy with yesterday's arrival :)

Looks great, Paul!

New Knife Days are always exciting days but it hasn't been very frequent lately for me to have a new Lambsfoot Day. Those days are pretty special when they arrive.

Another fantastic one from Charlie. These are the best knives that GEC produces and I'm thrilled that Waynorth and the factory could collaborate again to bring us something special.

Glad you were able to get one, Dylan. Beautiful pic!

Enjoying a beautiful day here in Wisconsin. It’s 50 degrees out!!!!! I’m gonna soak up as many rays as I can. At work stomping through the woods on a little hike doing “work” things. Got my Cosimo today.

Rumor has it my wife is making red enchiladas for dinner!!!! Win for Paul’s belly. Also a loss for my belly too 😂😂.

Nice pic, Paul. It was pretty warm here yesterday, too (relatively speaking), and pretty much all of the little snow we had has melted.

Tomorrow was supposed to be the dog sled race on Lake Minnetonka. Unfortunately they made the right call when they cancelled it a few weeks ago; they certainly couldn’t have held it in this weather.

Afternoon Guardians! Cloudy and cool with a chance of rain. Enjoying see all the nice Lambs out there. J Nowill and Sons 🐑 Stay Frosty

View attachment 2775440
That's interesting they're using the Nowill name. It is owned by Jack Adams old firm, on Scotland Street, Sheffield, but since they only make fixed blades, Wright's make Lambsfoot knives for them (usually just with a generic Sheffield mark)

Interesting. I was a little confused for a second, because I wasn’t familiar with the brand, but I saw David’s pic and thought, “That’s definitely a Wright’s knife.” 😁

Tool Man insists he has no intention of going near the market for at least the next 6 weeks

I wonder if he’d follow the doctors’ orders that closely if they told him to, say, switch to a vegetarian diet? 🤨😁

Great collaboration on the jigging Jack Black Jack Black and @waynorth

Good morning Guardians, getting to the end of the week now, and I hope everyone has had a good one :) I have a bunch of tasks and chores to take care of today, but hoping to meet up with Wolfie at some point, for a coffee. Have to see if the stars align! :D Carrying Schultz! :D

View attachment 2776074

Ausgezeichnet! 😁

Juuuuuust curious, how many of these were made?
I'm not exactly sure, to be honest. At least this many.

View attachment 2776240

There were 26 made, all shown in that pic there.

This lamb just dropped in.
I don't know if it was made by or for Burgon & Ball.

It seems to function to well, to be a recent build.

I can’t say with 100% certainty, but I believe that knife was made by Wright’s. I know there’s been some discussion of Burgon & Ball branded knives in the thread before.

Thank you Barrett. I had a feeling they would have applied their stamp, had they made it.

Good morning from Dallas, Guardians. Starting a business trip to the west coast today. Heading out to the PNW, not quite as far north or west as @waynorth territory though. Here’s the Box Elder in the golden hour last evening. Sun came back after the deluge.View attachment 2776187View attachment 2776188
Nice photos Dave, hope you have safe and productive travels :)
🤣

What is the clutch (?) out of?

Who knows?! :D Just one of the many oddments that Tool Man has filled up his stall with the past couple of years. He no longer gets the interesting second-hand tools he once did, and I can see him packing it in before too long. I has some ideas of returning to the market, and selling pocket watches, rather than old tools, but I doubt he'd sell one a fortnight, and the mark-up on them won't pay the rent. Tool Man never learned a trade, he was a labourer for most of his working life, and he should probably retire and put his feet up  Nice choice there
I'm ready to get the weekend started, we're not doing anything special just some piddling around the house. I need to put a new edge on the Barrett lamb.. or at least a quick strop.

Sometimes that makes for a reasonable weekend Pat :) A popular choice today :)

Looks like you need to be concentrating on getting some other things aligned here too Jack! 😅
I should know better than to expect Wolfie's promises to be of any substance, when it comes to meeting up! He was supposed to have an easy day today, but as they always do, things conspired against him, not least his kids being off skool! 😖👍

.
The Lords Of Livestock shone their light on me this week…

I can’t say here’s the Old v New, as both are relatively new. Nor can I say here’s the OG v’s the New Pup(Lamb).. as even though the bottom is a take on the top, I was heavily influenced by the the bottom while I was re-profiling/ modding the top! 🤔

Interesting comparison Thomas. Charlie's Lamb is actually based on a vintage Joseph Rodgers in his collection
From my experience only 🫣🤐, although I’ve no doubt some others feel the same?

It is a shame that to get anything close to the build quality of a production GEC you have to go custom here in the U.K., and even then it’s to be the right custom maker!
This A Wright Large Lambsfoot has a wonderful snap after a smooth walk but Heavens above was the fit and finish shocking!
Finish, sure can be fettled up DIY style but fit is a harder thing to sort out.
I say on their more expensive “premium” line they should spend less time fancying them up with a file, “finer” cover materials, blasting on the polishing wheel and more time just getting the basics actually right! There I said it.. 🪖🧑‍🚒🪖
It's a tragedy! 😠 Their QC goes from bad to worse. I felt sorry for the gas-mask lads who have had a couple of SFOs made up by them, you needed pliers to open the blades on the first run! 😖 It took a huge amount of effort to get a few good runs out of them, and they still reverted to form in the end, after the business changed hands. More than once, I've offered Sheffield cutlers 2 and 3 times their regular rates, if they'll make a better product, only to get stuffed. I once caught one custom maker machine-grinding the 'hand-ground' blades, ruined the whole batch! 🤯 The worst thing about it is that there are still a few cutlers there who CAN make a good knife, but turning out second-rate stuff seems to have become entwined in their DNA! 😖
Sweet Pete
Happy Friday all !

It's nice to see a 'Burgon & Ball' knife that isn't made in China! :D I'm sure it'll work my friend :)

That was Watkinson, the first Sheffield gaffer to want 13 knives to the dozen! :D

Watkinson And His Thirteens

This monster oppression behold how he stalks,
Keeps picking the bones of the poor as he walks,
There's not a mechanic throughout this whole land
But more or less feels the weight of his hand;
That offspring of tyranny, baseness and pride,
Our rights hath invaded and almost destroyed
May that man be banished who villainy screens:
Or sides with big Watkinson with his thirteens

Choru
s:
And may the odd knife his great carcass dissect,
Lay open his vitals for men to inspect,
A heart full as black as the infernal gulf,
In that greedy, blood sucking, bone scraping wolf.

This wicked dissenter, expelled his own church,
Is rendered the subject of public reproach:
Since reprobate marks on his forehead appeared,
We all have concluded his conscience is seared:
See mammon his god, and oppression his aim,
Hark! how the streets ring with his infamous name,
The boys at the playhouse exhibit strange scenes
Respecting big Watkinson with his thirteens.

Chorus

Like Pharaoh for baseness, that type of the de'il,
He wants to flog journeymen with rods of steel,
And certainly would, had he got Pharaoh's power,
His heart is as hard, and his temper as sour;
But justice repulsed him and set us all free,
Like bond-slaves of old in the year jubilee.
May those be transported or sent for marines
That works for big Watkinson at his thirteens.

Chorus

We claim as true Yorkshire men leave to speak twice,
That no man should work for him at any price,
Since he has attempted our lives to enthral,
And mingle our liquor with wormwood and gall;
Beelzebub take him with his ill-got pelf,
He's equally bad, if not worse than thyself;
So shall every cutler that honestly means
Cry 'take away Watkinson with his thirteens.'

Chorus

But see foolish mortals! Far worse than insane,
Three fourths are returned into Egypt again;
Although Pharaoh's hands they had fairly escaped,
Now they must submit for their bones to be scraped;
Whilst they give themselves and their all for a prey
Let us be unanimous and jointly say,
Success to our sovereign who peaceably reigns,
But down with both Watkinson's twelves and thirteens.

And may the odd knife his great carcass dissect,
Lay open his vitals for men to inspect,
A heart full as black as the infernal gulf,
In that greedy, blood sucking, bone scraping wolf.

Fantastic photo Barrett  Sorry they had to cancel the event again, the idea of a dog-sled race through the centre of town is pretty darn cool
Interesting. I was a little confused for a second, because I wasn’t familiar with the brand, but I saw David’s pic and thought, “That’s definitely a Wright’s knife.” 😁
Yes indeed, they've even made a few for Eggington and TEW over the past few years, and 'Burgon & Ball' from the look of it! :D
I wonder if he’d follow the doctors’ orders that closely if they told him to, say, switch to a vegetarian diet? 🤨😁
He's not coming down to the market because of doctor's orders, it's just that while he expects people to turn up to keep him company every week, he has no sense of solidarity when it comes to others, even Boring Ray, who he's known more than 50 years. I did suggest we could visit the new Belly Buster cafe, but he can't see the point in turning up if there's no money to be made
Ausgezeichnet! 😁
Danker! :D

Thank you Barrett. I had a feeling they would have applied their stamp, had the made it.
They still have a factory in Sheffield Bob, but I'm not sure they've made much, if anything, there for a long time. Like other well-known British brands, such as Wilkinson Sword or Spear & Jackson, their name tends to adorn inexpensive, imported gardening tools, and cheap Chinese-made folders, the sort you find in hardware stores here

IMG_2040.JPG

That really is a shame .
Yes, they care nothing for the world famous reputation their forebears achieve :(
Some of their older ones are top notch !

These two are I believe to be A.W. and are nicely made.

View attachment 2776363
I reckon they were at least made at that factory Steve, the lower one may, technically be a Howarth. Before John Maleham bought the business, Jack Howarth ran both firms out of there:thumbsup:
