Harley Chain to Double Edge Boot Knife

Its beginning to shape up.

Notice the grinds naturally overlap each other where they meet towards the tip, causing the ridge to move back and forth until the grinding is finished.

The edges are thin and will overheat easy now. Time for a fresh 80 grit belt.

Remember I have ground this whole knife after heat treating.

Wow don't mean to go off topic but i have never really looked at your work until now and I am really impressed, your Outlaw Bowie is absolutely stunning.

Hey thanks, That "Bump" guard is my own design.
BTW our Son lives in the Bay area too. Mountain View

 Daggers got to be difficult to hold on to while grinding:confused: I sure am impressed.

Bruce, I wish to offer a little criticism... one way to make that knife better would be to hang it inside my boot!

Seriously though, beautiful craftsmanship. Just superb. Thanks for the tutorial.

Hey Brucemeister this has been a very educational tutorial, I think everyone is gaining from it, I know I am:thumbup: . I'm looking forward to seeing it completed, so that you can start the next pistol/knife in your series:D
Maybe you should produce tutorials for a living:)

Robert I did buy some 4140 off ebay the other day for the next pistol/folder. Its going to have stag scales and the usual gold wire and engraving. Ive burned up my pictoral space 3 times on just a little boot knife. I cant imagine how many images the pistol will take.

Bruce,I will get the new pictures up tomorrow night...

As for the pistol Tutorial,You can just email me all text and pictures then I will make the tutorial page for you and then it will save your space on here:thumbup: :D

So how do you keep from ruining the HT/temper? I just HT'ed my first blade but still have a lot of grinding to do. Do you just dunk it in water after each pass on the grinder and just take it real slow? Any tips?
Love the tutorial btw, great looking knife, I can't wait to see it completed.

Thanks for the kind words.

yep just dunk it when it gets uncomfortable to hold bare handed. Be sure to use sharp belts, dull ones will over heat things in a heartbeat.

Bruce,
You're doing awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing the end result.

Word. I need to get some layout fluid, that sure brings out the scribes. Heck, it looks kinda cool with the layout fluid still on it at the center spine. Maybe a cold blue, then polish off the bluing on the bevels. That would be interesting.

This one is damascus and just got etched today but if it were mono carbon steel I like your idea. One step further would be a hot gun blue on all the flats and a belt finish on the bevels. Nice contrast and serviceable too.

I made some more progress today.

The girls just love this knife!

This gator belt is about 320 grit and will grind into the plunges very well. Thats about all I use it for because they wear out rather quickly with hard use.

The bevels are done and down to 320 grit.

This is a table for my dremel. Its made by a friend and is very accurate to make small inside radious square.

Shown is a 1/4" stone but for every application there is a dremel bit available.

Here I am flat sanding the tang and ricasso to 1000 grit. Just a straight piece of cheap micarta with sandpaper wrapped around it. Water or wd40 on the paper will help speed up the process. I use paper like it was free.

Electro-etching my logo

Resisting the logo with the wifes reject fingernail polish. I like this oval around it

Into the acid it goes. BTW I use 4 parts distilled water and 1 part ferric cloride. I also poured about a cup of viniger in there. Its a slow etching mixture but nice and reliable.

Out of the etch the first time and it shows some patterns. I can see the pins and rollers and plates of the chain. Also the course grain of the 1084 powder. hmmm interesting.

The second or maybe the third 10 minute dip out of the acid. I use 0000 steel wool between dips. Usually 3 dips is enough, I like to feel the pattern with a fingernail.

I found some 600 grit scratches. Its funny...you would think that 600 is fine enough but any scratch at all just seems to get bigger and more visible from the acid. I am grinding the bevels again and re-etch them.

I decided to do something different so I sprayed the whole knife with blue layout fluid and reground the bevels up to about 1200. The layout fluid is used as a resist because I dont want to etch anything except the bevels this time.

Here is the new thing for me at least. This is black model car paint applied with a tooth pick to resemble flames around the edges.

After 3 more 10 min. etches I had to soak off all that paint and blue fluid with Strip-eze (paint remover). That black paint makes a good resist. I hand sanded it with 1500 and 2000 and hit it on the buffer for a second w/scratchless pink.

The MS stencil next. I know I know I have a stamp for that stencils are more convenient. You cant stamp a hardened blade anyway.

A better shot of the finished blade. I like it.

The handle comes next. Its going to be thin and undersized with a red liner. Im still scratching my head as what material would look good. Any suggestions? Carbon Fibre is my first choice but I dont have any left. May need to order something.
