Have you handled a Spyderco lately?

I wish the scales were flush with the liners at the edges, it bugs me when they are designed that way, I have had a Kizer Beigleter 2 for about a year that’s the same way, I thought I would get used to it, but no luck yet, it still bothers me enough that I am considering taking it to the grinder.
Bothers you physically or aesthetically?

Both, but the biggest problem is I just don’t like the way it feels in hand when the liners protrude. Just a niggle that bothers me enough I can’t get used to it.

I have 53 Spydies in my collection, so that speaks volumes on how I feel about the brand.

That being said, I haven’t bought a new Spyderco in several years. It seems to me the brand has stopped innovating and is content to release old models in new materials, which just doesn’t have a lot of appeal to me.

The new models they do release are by guest designers with very niche styles. I think Spyderco is in danger of becoming a throwback knife maker in an industry that’s rushing ahead in leaps and bounds.

Every Spydie Reveal ultimately feels like a disappointment with the big “reveal” being a new Manix with peel-ply chartreuse CF scales.

I agree with you here.
I really like the GB-2 but the liners protruding and digging into my hand are painful.
Also seems no one makes scales to fix this problem.

I really like Spyderco and have more Spyders than any other brand. I almost carry exclusively Spyderco.
They carry light and easy, when it’s time to cut they just feel right.

I'm a huge fan of Spyderco knives. One of the great US knifemakers. And aside from minor blade centering issues, which I don't really worry about, I've also found them to be consistently very well made and with great edges.

Great looking knives out there!!

I was VERY close to getting a Shaman and was looking at all the cool aftermarket scales, but the combo of 3D machined G10 and coated MagnaCut on the PM2 Salt won me over in the end.

BTW - does anyone know when the next batch is due to be released??

I've been recently unsatisfied with most of the Spydercos I got UNLESS they are Taichung productions or Golden USA.
The Seki-City productions are really going down the drain IMHO, and that's a shame because they used to be great value and among my faves.

Whats wrong with them? I've bought 3 seki models in the last year and all are absolutely top notch. No issues at all for me.

My last one was a Massad Ayoob in Cruwear:

In general my main qualm has been inconsistent grinds, satin finish issues, super sharp spines (but some might consider it a feature).

Honestly tho, once I started using full G10 Cold Steels like the Lawman or the Holdout 3 I find it very hard to go back to Spyerco lockbacks: they become wobbly after hard cutting (eg on a solid surface) and are a pain to service.

I only regret not having the latest and greatest steels.

Yeah, I'd be pretty annoyed too if the tip was that off on mine. The bevels were ground uneven on my last purchase, an endela, but not as bad as yours. I just sharpened it a couple times and they were even.

Yeah I don't mind minor defects, I don't collect. But man this one looked like a chisel lol.
Since it was like that I made an experiment and transformed it into a scandivex profile.
It didn't turn out too bad, it's a folding pukko now.

I will never not own a Gayle Bradley 2. No matter how many knives I have that I feel like does this or that better - it always fits, and it's always a no-brainer for me to pocket no matter what I'm doing.

Can say the same about the Military, PM2, Stretch 2 XL, Police, Native Chief, and the Caribbean (IMO, one of their most underrated designs). One of my favorite knives in my collection is the Ikuchi - I love a company that's willing to make a design that useful knowing that it probably won't be a big seller. I carry it a bunch on "business professional" days at work where I have to wear slacks, and it's such a classy little laser (with way more blade than you would expect).

And then there's the Smock, Swayback, K-2 - so many great designs.

I’ve carried an Endura or Delica daily for the last 15 years, supplemented with a CS Voyager. I lost my Delica I posted in the Regrind thread and replaced it with an orange FFG version. Many places I work have a 3” blade limit, so the Voyager and Endura are out of contention many times.

The reasons I like them are the lack of thumb stud and the common use of VG-10 steel. Originally developed for plant grafting knives, VG-10 holds a good edge and gets very sharp without me having to replace or supplement my stones with diamond or CBN. I just don’t want to get a set of stones for just one knife in a steel that requires them and I’ve never been able to sharpen CPM S30V or greater to my satisfaction with my current stone setup.

The lack of thumb stud means I can rebevel to whatever angle I want and not have it in the way. My current Spydercos are at 12 dps and are finished off in the Sharpmaker at 15 dps. Other knives like my Voyager are at 17/20 dps or even 22 dps to avoid bouncing the stud off the stone or grinding into it. 17/20 is acceptable but 22 dps edges are way to steel for a folding knife used for cutting. My Barong and Panga machetes aren’t even that obtuse.

I don’t find VG-10 as used by spyderco or anyone else at typical hardness to be any more difficult to sharpen than 440c, N690, or sandvic 12c27. The thin behind the edge flat grinds spyderco tends to use are a breeze to touch up, though some of the saber grind models are harder and end up with a wide bevel at my preferred low angles.

A Norton India (alum ox) works perfectly well on VG-10, as does the Crystolon Pike (I think that’s SiC), both are cheap and available. Basically anything more than novaculite sharpens VG-10 well for me.

Ceramic stick, and a work sharp field sharpener do the bulk of my edge work these days, but kitchen knives and larger knives warrant breaking out the India oil stone.

The steel works well and is easy to maintain so I like it as well.
