Greyhulk should be sharing the blame. But I cant imagine mailing something worth 1200? With no insurance unless the buyer didnt want it.

I agreed to 50/50 refund in the email... And the response I get is posted above..
Who's not being cooperative..

I'm sure you can work this out without insults.

Ok I live in Canada. I have always asked for items to be shipped as gift and declared a low number knowing I would take the blame if anything happened. Also claiming a low number i feel makes it a little "safer" Who wants to open a box that is valued at $50 and risk losing your job. If you put a value of $1500 on that box He could have been charged $150+ in customs fees. If you have paper work or a email of him saying to send as a gift it is his fault. That is just my 2 cents. Also the possibility of him lying to you and just keeping the knife? Again don't know the full story its just my two cents.

Yea this needs to be solved privately
. This is just getting out of hand now. Maybe a mod could mediate it or something.

yer now he wants to split after telling me i should pay most of it since table prices are lower. even though i paid $1400 for the knife.

yer now u want to split after i had to come back on here and tell the world how un-cooperative u were being.

It is up to the seller to make sure the buyer gets the knife it is also up to the seller to buy insurance as a buyer does not get that money if there is a claim made if as a seller you chose not to insure the item then that fault is on you not the buyer.

If You where in my shoes want would you have done...

Oh holy crap!!
I would have NOT asked the seller to LIE for you on the customs form.
You have now substantiated and strengthened the argument against cross-border sales Alex mentioned above.

Thanks bud.

You probably would if you got charged another $100 on every item coming to you over $400. It all adds up.

I'm going to close this for a day and give you both some time to work this out privately as it isn't looking good for either one of you right now.

Sooo I get screwed for helping him out?

How is that fair?
I'm not sure if you are asking us? I mean, we can't do anything. What you need to do is submit paperwork to Paypal when the time comes and they contact you. Let them know what you did, when, how, and why. Honesty is the best policy at this point. If you keep on lying the crap you are currently in will only get deeper and stinkier. You made a series of dumb rookie mistakes, from the way you packaged the item, to the lack of protection you provided yourself, to the "favor" you tried to do someone else.

That my friend is called the cost of doing business. It is not mandatory that you buy anything that causes you to pay import taxes, right? This is one of the main reasons why people do NOT send stuff put side the US 50. Asking people to lie on a customs for for you is downright shady and I would not do business with anyone that asked me to do that, it's cutting off your nose to spite your own face.

What should have happened with a $1200 knife is that it should have been packaged in a box, with a half a roll of tape. USPS Priority International Express should have been used, with full insurance purchased for the exact amount. This amounts to a very careless rookie mistake, and should not have happened to begin with. Hell, it should have been done this way with a $120 knife.

jpinc since you don't seem to understand why I closed the thread I'll reopen it for you.

You got screwed because you let yourself get screwed. You lied on a customs form. You didn't insure your package. You didn't properly package your item. You agreed to, and did all this ridiculous stuff. Take some responsibility here. In our society people always want to blame others for their problems. This is a classic example.

Two more for the ignore list....

Well put. This is really just common sense stuff.
