Just the EMT in me coming out to play, but I'd be concerned about carbon monoxide building up in an enclose space with stuff burning. It's heavier than air and would be hanging out down around nose level if sleeping on the ground.

OH, and in on today whatever page it is.

my scout troop has a large canvas wall tent, kinda like the old military ones, that we use on cold weather campouts and we use a wood stove in it. it keeps it nice and toasty in there for cooking and whatnot

I hear ya. Not sure if a wigwam could be made like a tipi, in the sense that a tipi has a draft wall. The outside wall of a tipi doesn't go all the way to the ground, and you put a half wall up on the inside. That allows air go up through the walls of the tipi, so the fire can draft up. Here's a poor example of what I'm talking about:

Dubz, I have never done the stove in a tent thing but I have backpacked and camped in the UP in the beginning of Feb (2006). I believe it got down to around 15 degrees. There was 4 of us. The other 3 guys slept on a tarp on the ground near the fire (idiots lol). They woke up alot to feed the fire. I dug out an area for my tent and piled up the snow around the hole (the snow was about 2 feet deep, my hole was 3 deep with the snow I dug out and banked up. I slept like a baby and I only had a 0 degree mummy bag from Walmart (as a rule of thumb I try to use a bag rated 30 degrees below what the expected low is--since it was only going to be 15 to 20 I wanted to use a -10 bag but couldn't get a hold of one in time. Oh and I did use one of those 1" foam sleeping bads with the mylar on one side. I'm sure that helped a bit too. Another trick is to toss one of those hand warmer packets down by your feet in your sleeping bag-amazing how much it helps- sorry for the novel

I have a mat too, gotta keep the ground from sucking the warmth out of your body. The wife and I are talking about visiting the UP. Have always wanted to go there.

On a side note, I was told about a hell of a deal on a small cabin on a few acres. Bare bones, primitive cabin. Cheap as can be too. I'm looking into it. Yeah, I know I have no job, but came into a bit of money recently.

They have some really inexpensive cabins in the Porcupine Mtns (western UP). You hike in (there are short distance hikes and longer ones) and I believe they have the cupboards stocked and a woodstove. I think you have replace the firewood you use (ax provided if memory serves me right-i never went there-my cousin has been there quite a few times)-if you are interested I can get u more info

We always research where we go, but if you wanna give me some info, feel free.

Well off of work and its officially the weekend. Wish it was a week ago so I could be going canoeing again. Last weekend was my first time in a canoe in nearly 20 years. So much fun, I think I have found my next addiction...until at least I get into a kayak, then I know it's all over.

Yep. It's over for you then. We bought another boat yesterday.

Where did you go out to?

Booyeah.

We went to Milltown. Cave Country Canoes. Nothing major but it was so much freaking fun. I loved it.

Yea, Blue River can be a lot of fun! Unfortunately, last time I went down there was a couple years ago when we were in a pretty good drought and my fat ass was dragging rocks half the time. :(

Bearded - If you and the kid need something to do this weekend head down to the expo center. The Military Vehicle Preservation Association is having their national convention there this year.

Here's a pic that my dad sent me while they were setting up earlier this week. These were just the early arrivals. It'll be packed with old trucks, Jeeps, half-tracks, tanks, you name it.... I know they are planning an old vehicle rodeo and other events for Saturday.

Here's a pic sent to me form when the local guys took over 4th street in Louisville earlier this week.

I loved the Blue River. I was dragging too at the beginning of the seven mile excursion but once I finally got the rhythm down we were golden.

And I am going to that. My dad is doing something with a group he's a part of and we are taking my son too. It should be a blast.

I'll be there all day Saturday as a spectator. It'll be the first convention I've been to in a while where I wasn't helping someone work a booth in some form or another. I was pretty active in the local MVPA chapter hosting the convention with my dad before I moved up to Indy. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to escape from work to help them out with this.

Hope to run into you there. Although I'm sure I'll be in frantic dad mode all day chasing my three year old.
