How about a Camp knife challenge ?

SDS - the design works well for me. I really enjoy the jiming that extends pretty far down the spine as it works well for my index finger and detail work.

Lookin good Bruce! How wide is it?

Well I didn't measure, but it was cut out from 1 1/2" wide bar stock and there was a sliver left over......so its +/- 1 1/4" wide. And thanks for the comment, but as you know there is a lot of work left to go!

I'm down to 3 possibles.

I was really going to make a leuku buschrafter with a modification tot he handle and a slightly broader and longer blade with some thumb ramp. The straight spine and big belly is pretty popular.

I started messing around with a different design, an even broader blade with a straight spine at an angle, like a full length clip. that one is looking really nice. This one is also a thin blade, but has a lot going on and... well, eveyr time I get nervous about people accepting thin blades I just look at what people do to them :D This design came out of working up a knife for someone's planned Alaskan walkabout. I'm very happy with the knife so far.

And I've been working on a trail knife, which is a more complex concept as it's partially designed to be a finishing or SD knife as well as a camp and trail blade. That's just insanely thick- 3/16 at the hilt, with a distal taper and a much shalloer belly geometry.

I think the Alaskan walkabout is winning in my head right now, but it's hard to not just make a bigger leuku :)

Just about every knife I make starts with a drawing. Here it is.....

It will be a few weeks before I can get started on the real thing.

Rick. it needs more bonbe.

I'm finishing up the handles on mine. Not sure if I'm happy enough with it to enter it. It has a small cosmetic flaw, but it won't affect performance. I may set it aside, start another, and see how the second one turns out. I have a little bit quicker deadline than the others because I'm leaving town for the last week of September and not getting back until early October.

Just waiting to hear on when to send mine in.

Hey John,

I sent an e-mail to the makers with my address, timeline and other details. As long as it is in by the deadline, you are cool. If you want to send it in early, I can always start snapping pics :D

If you need me to resend that e-mail, just let me know.

You better get your ass in gear. If you wouldn't have been playing around in Vegas, you would have had something accomplished by now. :D
You too Andy. ;)

:(Yes, sir, Mr. Gossman, sir....:p

This week is pretty much screwed for me.....

Here it is the big chopper 13" overall 1/4" A2 2 1/4" wide. Big blade big handle, this knife is a chopper but with the full flat grind and tapered tang it is easy to handle. Opal Green micarta with a red liner on tang and guard. Stainless guard, pinned and soldered, Stainless colby bolts and lanyard tube. Edge ground to 0.050 to carry a really sharp edge for food prep and camp chores but wide enough for chopping wood and splitting.

The handle is set at a 5 degree angle to the blade to take pressure off the wrist when chopping below elbow height. Guard extends down to protect fingers while chopping or doing crazy shit. This knife wants to do lots for crazy shit.

More pics to come

Well I'm back in the game. I managed to get my blade profiled tonight. I still need to grind the bevels but at least I have a game plan now. As much as I would have enjoyed designing a new knife I decided to go with my regular camp knife offering. I figure this will be a good test of that knife instead of something entirely new.
