How about a Camp knife challenge ?

Thanks Christof, but I think I'll be good. I'm shipping from Ohio to Chicago. It should be here by Thursday I would hope.

The stuff that's messed up on the one I just did is all cosmetic. It will perform just fine. So even if I go with my worst case, I'll still be as competitive as I can be.

Thanks though. I really appreciate it.

I don't need to ship it yet.. You can even take it up with you if you like.

Are you sure you trust him with it?

To be safe, let me use it for a bit to make sure it will be OK for him to use. I'll need to make sure it is not easy to carve towards yourself with it.

For those not in on this one - on the last backpacking trip I took with Ray, I was carving something that, due to the geometry of what I was trying to cut, required me to cut toward myself at one point. To make a long story short, I now have an appointment to see a hand surgeon to reattach a tendon in my left index finger.

Really enjoying this thread. Astounds me how quickly, and with such little fuss, you guys made this 'competition' happen. The knives I have seen so far are fantastic! When can we see all the knives and when will the comments of the judges be posted?

Thanks again for a very informative and entertaining thread.

I liked the first one I did, but want a different handle material, and since I'm making another couple of them anyhow..... handle scales go on tomorrow and should have WIP photos then. got a nice pear branch I'm eyeing....

I was suprized how many branches needed trimming, just walked out there with the knife and said, wow, why havent these been cut before??? Pears need a good trim now and then.

I need an update - when is this supposed to be turned in to Brian?

I was supposed to have mine waterjet cut out of 3/16" CPM 3V....but despite sending the CAD file and steel a month ago...I am SOL on seeing a blade anytime soon. :( (even if I did get it....no time for a Paul Bos heat-treat)

So, I am going to have to cut one out real quick from some 1/4" 5160 (not my ideal best, but good nonetheless)..and keep my fingers crossed on heat-treat. :D

Hopefully I can get it done in time.

Dan

That sucks Dan, your 3V is hard to beat.

Though that spring steel (5160) makes for a tough user.

I can’t wait to see the finished product.

That's a nice one koyote - but it looks like a departure from your normal handle and the ergos they entail, which I think is one of your greatest assets....My 2 cents.

oh, it's a touch short on the front guard thing, but that's not universal. it's actually pretty comfy for fine use because you can so easily pinch the blade. But, I'm doing something else anyhow :D

based on the same basic idea plan, but with a few REALLY big differences (the handle and spine, mostly)

Less talking and more grinding!!! I know damn well I'm going to own one of these things, so get on it! :) So far I like everything I see...may have to get a second job because of this damn comp!

I got the final temper done on mine today. I should have the handles on this weekend. HOPEFULLY I can have it finished by the end of next week.

SDS

handles cut out, will have them on tomorrow, mess around with final shaping and stuff and... then the sheath wait might be a few extra days. we're low on leather and more won't come in until monday or tuesday

My finger is healing....

I got the blade rough ground, pin holes drilled, makers mark stamped, heat treated, and as I type this it is tempering in the oven....

I ALMOST went with this one:

But I didn't. So you are all still in suspense.

I like the look of that one buddy, reminds me a little of a Gaucho knife !:thumbup:Hope your actual entry is just as nice !!!!
