How about a Camp knife challenge ?

I just can't get the time, right now.....

Well, I'm hoping to see it finished - that's a really nice looking knife Rick!

Is anyone entering a forged blade?

I'm gluing up the liners to the scales on my knife today. I tempered the spine back to blue using a small propane tourch and the blade edge in a pan of water, handsanding is half done.....tic-tock, tic,-tock the deadline is closing in!

I'm devoting Mon & Tues to this knife... If I move my a$$ I'll get it forged out and heat treated tomorrow (1080 mat'l)... then finish the handle and sheath the next day. Wish me luck and thanks for the encouragement, guys!

Rick

Get your lazy @$$ in gear and off of the computer.:D
I can't wait to see the finished product.

Awww, Rick. I thought the rest of us were gonna get off easy and now you have to show us up with your mad bonbe!

This is a pear tree in the front yard- decorative. Good wood, and I was chopping an old growth main branch that's too low- so it's weight bearing strong wood, which you could tell. (That's where I usually use a saw.)

I love the look of that one buddy, something about the lines really appeals to me, can't wait to see how it performs !!!;)

Almost done with mine...Gotta finish up the handles and make a sheath.

I'm actually pretty happy with it. Unfortunately with me leaving town Thursday morning, and having a TON of work to get done before I go, I will have zero time to do much testing with this bad boy. So here's hoping it holds up! I'll get a pic snapped tomorrow.

I haven't read this whole thread, but is there a plan for the rest of us to vote on the design aspect of this challenge? Or does one person pick the best design?

It may have been said before, but a peoples choice award is a great idea. Also, it would be great to read descriptions by the makers as to what design features they implemented and why.

This is truly an awesome thread and I only wish had more to contribute.

Rock on.

dude-

Ok, guys...here's my final CAD drawing...it's now or never....

Name for this one: M.U.C.K.

(My Ultimate Camp Knife)

I found a local source for some 3/16" O1 (which will be lighter than the 1/4" 5160 I have on hand) - so I'm going to take a shot at it. It won't be as tough as 3V, but O1 aint no slouch either!!

Have a look and let me know what you think.

I included a "ruler" for reference.

Part of my reasoning for this size/shape:

I want it to be able to fit in a Spec Ops Combat Master Short sheath
LGcombatmaster_1.jpg

..yet get as much blade as possible in there. :D

I angled the blade forward (not too unlike a kukri) for better chopping

Exposed pommel for crushing

Lanyard hole at the back (beyond the grip...won't get in the way of your hand while using the knife)

The blade "reverse tapers" (gets wider as it goes toward the tip) for added weight in chopping. This has been time-tested with my Survivor knife.

Spear-point tip (better for digging over a drop point; nice and stabby too)

False edge to lighten the tip a bit and make penetration easier

Thumbgooves on top for striking a firesteel and for grip retention

The tang will be significantly drilled out to make this knife very light/easy to carry. I will also be providing a multi-position kydex sheath and will just let the tester decide which he likes better.

The handle will be make out of 3/8" thick Natural Canvas Micarta with some palm-swell/contouring - will be heavily bead-blasted for extra grip.

Next step is to cut out the steel.

Dan

Awesome knife, Dan!

Work in process shots....

I forged the blade out, quenched and oven tempered it yesterday. Today I put the handle scales on. (Elk) I will finish the handle pins and wrap tonight... hopefully I will start on the sheath tomorrow...

I do a lot of work with norse influenced blades, and also the spanish/mediterranean dirk design influences- it's no surprise some stuff comes out looking similar to a chef's knife. The edge is certainly stronger than a regular chef's knife (I'm considering thinning it out a touch, though) and the steel, for all my thin bladedness, is substantially thicker than a decent chef's knife- if I do a chef's knife out of this stock it's going to most likely have a fair distal taper and a more full convex grind, or even flat grind. (flat grinding 3/32 a 1.5 inches broad or so is NOT fun. You don't so much set an angle as hold a steady pressure differential.)

I think the significant similarities in belly profile and edge drop will help with using the knife, the modern french chef's blade is a VERY useful design. I did try and keep a straight - angle, but straight- spine for scraping and batonin perfoemance, and the thumb ramp is really quite large.

Of course, then rick comes along with another classic wildertool and now I have to go kill myself in shame. :D

That could quite possibly be my favourite of all the knives I've seen ya make Rick, great work !;)

Alrighty. I've got my entry filed. Hand sanding tomorrow. I'll post pics then. I will say it has a convex sabre grind!

Very nice Rick!

I am glad you're getting your knife done.......except I don't need that kind of competition!:p
