How about a Camp knife challenge ?

This is a gorgeous bunch of knives. I like them all (surprise!). It's interesting to see how the basic challenge - create an all-around camp knife - is interpreted by the different makers. With the same goal in mind, Rick has created a knife with traditional stylings, natural handle material, and a rustic-looking blade, while Dan has gone for a more modern design with synthetic materials. Both look awesome.

Terrific thread.

All the best,

- Mike

WOW  all of your knives look amazing, I can't wait for the actual testing to get underway.

Great work guys

Thanks, Mentor.... I agree 100%... everyone has their own interpretation of the ultimate camp knife.

For me, there is always a give and take when it comes to choosing my equipment. I compare it to the feel of an old worn-in pair of leather hiking boots... they might not offer the support or wieght reduction of modern footwear using synthetic materials, but they just "feel right". I choose a blanket over a sleeping bag... a bedroll over a backpack... flint & steel over a lighter... and wool over Gortex. Not because they are superior but because it all adds up to my idea of being a bushbum.... and when I feel like a woodsman I AM A WOODSMAN.

So while my rustic blade might not weather as nicely as some... I hope it transports you back a few hundred years when you hold it.

Rick

hilarious....:D  :p

Yes...quite the carpet in that pic...:o

I prefer to think of myself as having Magnum PI wrists.

LOL!!!!

Dan

Wow Dan:eek: That looks so good it makes me sick:barf:

Where did you get the handle material. I love it!

I buy the micarta by the 2'x4' sheet...

*cough*, *cough*, *cough*....

But I've found the best deals for "normal" folks to be had at Sheffield's Knife Supply.

I agree with Magnussen - not only does every knifemaker have their own tastes and design ideas....but there's also the different tooling and machinery to take into account.

There are things I cannot do with the machinery I have...and there are also features that I have built machinery around so that I can do it more efficiently. Every knife I design has to take into consideration my process, my tools, my time spent on it, etc.

Great comments so far.

Let's see if we can get more makers talking about their process - would be great!

Dan

I know no one else is having this problem but, every new knife posted on this thread is my new favorite, lol I guess they'll all go on the wish list. So when are you guys gonna set prices and start production?

David

No way. This turned out great! When are we having a 10" chopper design contest?!

12 inch chopper contest! :D

Stomper- you've put a really good blade out there. Nothing you need to worry about at all.

Nosh- not all of us have been doing it that long- and I've learned that sometimes the new look at things from a fairly new maker is incredibly valuable!

Nah, lets go crazy! 10 to16 inch chopper contest :) Anything in between. Anything less..and its just a toy :P (I say as I break out my 2" mora carver)

gotta have more than chopping in it. shaving curls, batoning, and ..... what else?

I love the chopper contest. We will see head to head, The thick chopper and the thin chopper. Is edge geometry what is importnat or is it shear mass that is important. I think I am getting ahead of myself.

These camp knives are turning out great. I can't wait to see the head to head competition.

Paul

Rick...you should have put yours in your post too, awesome to have them all together in one post!

Everyones are looking really good.

P.S. I am down(and done) a big chopper....who's the judge?:)

Well...... these are my favorites, so far.......

Rick

As much as I would love to handle all of these, I am truly glad that someone else has to decide a winner.
WOW, what a selection!
Great idea Pitdog!

I'm betting it was Maisy that came up with the idea.:D

Wow, all of them look good thus far. I have been following this since the beginning, and I was expecting some nice blades, but WOW! A lot of these just blow me away with their looks! I am glad I am not doing the testing.. it would be WAY to hard to pick a winner, if each of these perform how I think they would.

Alrighty, here's the Noshtero Knives contribution.

The Noshtero Knives Camp Knife.
5 1/2" blade
10 1/2" overall
3/16" 01 heat treated and tempered by yours truly
Mirror polished edge
Poisonwood handle with aluminum pins and lanyard tube
Black leather sheath with braided stitching made by my dad!

My dad tells me "Ya know, back in the 50's when I was 14 I bought some leather tools so I could make a wallet for my dad. I think I still have them laying around. I wanna take a shot at making a sheath for you." So he pulls out these tools that he bought at Tandy leather. He even found a refund slip for 15 cents! I told him he should go try to turn it in. Then he went to our local craft store and bought an odds and ends bag of leather scraps for $5. And he put this sheath together for me. He's not really happy with it, but I think it's awesome! I've never seen one with braided stitching before.

This is also the first knife ever to make my maker's mark on it. And it may be the last one to have this version of the mark. The font is WAY too small, and I get my choice of really light or blurred.

So without further ado, The Noshtero Knives Camp Knife!
