How close to rubbing the liner is acceptable?

I’m starting a band called Baldes.
 
It's pretty clear that someone with a desk full of knives, picked it up, sharpened it, and then printed the form letter and put it all back in the box. There's no mention of centering in the letter. Its' simple human error, no dark conspiracy.

This has happened before and tazkristi has made it right. Call the number in the letter on Monday during their normal business hours and let us know what happens.

It sucks that it happened to you.

The only way this could be OK would be if it was a factory second but if you bought if from a dealer that shouldn't be the case.

They did not sharpen it. And I know because I use dmt stones and the marks from my dmt stones are unchanged. So if they didn't read the paper I put in the box, didn't sharpen it, what did they do? No one said anything about a conspiracy. They picked it up looked at it and put in the box with the letter that said they did all they could? That's the problem.
 
Those marks are from my dmt stones. I know them well. I'm not upset they didn't sharpen it, I actually forgot to mark "do not sharpen" on the paper and was going to mark it. So it worked out that they did nothing in that regard.

For sure that's a problem who ever sig'd that with a C will have to sort on Monday.

I hope so. I'm not rooting against spyderco, I actually would love to have a military 2 crucarta with good centering. All the horror stories of people's experiences they've shared don’t inspire confidence, I mean my own experience doesn't inspire confidence. Unless someone steps in I'm gonna be out my knife the entire summer if they decided to do anything at all.

Life goes on and I have other knives, but that doesn't make it ok.

In this case they went the opposite and did not sharpen it even though I forgot to mark do not sharpen 🤣 that ugly edge from my dmt stones is absolutely shaving sharp no matter how ugly it is. I didnt want to much steel removed by an aggressive belt sharpening so I was gonna mark do not sharpen, in my haste forgot.
 
I have a few Militarys but never had a Military 2 so can't comment about difficulty centering. Lots of other compression lock knives that are dead on though so its should be solvable. Maybe there's a trick for the Military 2.
 
Looking at the situation through the lens of a non-knife person, even your average Joe probably would not be happy with the blade that off center and would notice there was something "wrong" with their knife. What makes things worse is you would think a knife person would be working at Spyderco, and what knife person in their good conscience could look at that off-centered blade, see the customer's request to fix it, and just send it right back? I couldn't. I would make it right. Either fix it or send a new knife. Sucks sometimes but the customer is always right. That knife should not have left the factory.
 
I’m just brainstorming here… I believe all the statements you’ve made on this thread, so I’m trying to think outside of the box -

Is it possible that whoever inspected your knife when you sent it back to Spyderco assumed it was as a factory second because of the obvious blade misalignment? I didn’t notice the factory second “notch” on the thumb ramp, but is it possible a newer employee took your knife in and made an assumption that it was a factory second due to the blade centering?

Again, as I stated earlier in this thread, I’ve never sent any Spyderco back to a retailer or to the Spyderco factory. However, I own over 80 Spyderco knives and the only “issue” I’ve ever had is a knife not being “drop shutty” (hate that term) which is not an issue to me. It’s typically just as simple as slightly loosening the pivot. Otherwise, I’ve not had any problems.
 
This is my M2 (forgive the terrible photo). My 3 PM2’s are more centered. I have never had an issue with any Spyderco fit/finish and have been carrying them since they had the integrated clip.

I truly hope this gets resolved.

I suppose anything is possible, surely I hope if a new person is the one checking these knives that he/she would be under the supervision of someone with some experience. Even a brand new employee surely is looking at many knives a day that are perfectly centered, and could easily tell even with impaired vision or poor eye sight that mine was not like the others...
 
I skipped a few pages of this thread but..

Did you remove the blade and check the flatness of the tang?
I can’t imagine the centering being THAT off after some pivot/hardware adjustments without some degree of unevenness in the machining.

Is this a situation where each separate part is within spec, but when those randomly selected parts go together the tolerance stacking works against you? It is a production knife, isn’t it?

Most major knife manufacturers use surface grinders instead of milling so both sides could be flat and lay flat but may not necessarily be parallel. Both of these are flat, but like jonny said it could be a pivot hole drill/reamer was worn and created a crooked hole, or the laser cutouts in the liner are slightly off so when tightening faseners it pulls things in a non symmetrical manner. Could be a variety of things. I'm sure they have a cmm, it would be pretty easy to determine exactly what is wrong with it. Whether it's worth it to do that or just swap/blade or liner 🤷🏽
