How close to rubbing the liner is acceptable?

People who offer a different point of view in a discussion and call a spade a spade are trolls now, got it.
Looking at this situation and customer service interaction and then insulting me repeatedly after it's abundantly clear that the centering is not acceptable is trolling. You're just mucking up the thread with your memes and insults like this is personal to you. It's actually quite odd.

Some Folks Never Learn
Instead of returning it and getting another knife more to your liking, you send it in to be "fixed" and receive the same thing back then whine about it online, and I'm the weird one.

Have a good day bud.

well ya did post a trollish meme...which made me chuckle as i enjoy memes, jokes and heckling as does shiny, as hes a florida boy like me...that aside....

...but lot of us know shiny well and consider him a friend. hes a good man. served our country with honor...he got a poor knife...he should be able to complain in a reasonable way. which so far he has......you can disagree, and you've done that. we get your point of view. now lets all hold hands and be pals......

Ah hell you're gonna make me blush and I'm an ugly blusher

As well versed as you are with this forum and the knife world in general I’m surprised you haven’t come upon one of these spyderco threads in the past. Someone mentioned it earlier but yes the universal response is generally gonna be how does it cut. There’s a reason I always say that in my humble 30 years of buying knives opinion spyderco are some of the most overpriced items on the market. They do often cut like lasers but so do most knives I sharpen. 🤷

I honestly don't come to the spydie sub forum often, I mostly am a fixed blade guy but I have a decent number of folders crk, olamic, demko, Benchmade, Kai (zt kershaw) and quite a few spydercos etc.

I kinda wish I had frequented this sub forum a bit more because if I knew how they deal with basically rubbing the liner level of off center i'd definitely have returned it. I figured i could fix the centering and I really wanted to have a matching crucarta to go with my sons crucarta models.

Not gonna lie, kind of a bummer they are this bad at warranty/repair.

I'm all for making friends. That Crucarta is a banger if you can find one you are happy with.

You're not wrong, but it doesn't mean it isn't a valid reason to complain.

If Porsches (or insert whatever super car brand is your favorite) came with a bunch of bad looking gaps between the inside panels, you can guarantee owners wouldn't be overlooking it to just say, "Well the performance can't be beat. So what if a Toyota can do better interiors on a $25k Camry?"

Counter point: TESLA.

This is just an opinion based on my experience with a few hundred Spyderco knives and 45-50 modded users! I’ve never received a knife as bad as shinyedges shinyedges M2 and would’ve absolutely tried to fix it myself as he stated.

I’ve received knives with bad lock stick, wonky primary bevels, weird splotchy G10, peel ply CF with “rough” inside finish, off centered blades, lackluster action, weak detents, etc etc! None were bad enough for me to return to dealer or use Spydercos Warranty. That being said …his knife should’ve never left the factory! It’s obviously got a warped blade, miss aligned pivot hole, or defective liners…something isn’t right! The issues I mentioned on my knives were probably “in spec” but OPs knife has real problems.

To get the knife back from their warranty department with a blade just about hitting the liner is disappointing to say the least. I understand Spyderco gets a ton of clones, messed up knives that have been improperly reassembled, and countless other issues to their warranty department. But on this occasion, they didn’t even open the knife up and try to fix or ignored the defect is present, stating it’s in spec! Both scenarios are a problem to me!

This thread will be a learning experience for me in a few ways! If I ever receive a Spyderco with this bad a defect I’ll definitely return to dealer without trying to fix. I’ll also watch to see if there’s effort to engage or there’s just crickets!! 🦗

I am more a fixed blade guy myself, but I always have a folder on me as well and Spyderco is well represented in my pile of knives. And although I prefer a centered blade I can live with one that's not perfectly centered, but there should be a limit. If a new knife is already about to rub that doesn't give a great long term outlook because it will get worse.

I have never had to use Spyderco's warrenty department and don't frequent this specific subforum a lot, but I've seen Sal reply here and tell some people to send a knife in that had been previously overlooked for a repair so I'm really hoping that this truly is not something they find acceptable or it will definitely change how I look at future purchases. One bad apple may not spoiled the bunch, but it can still leave a sour taste in your mouth.

And to say the OP should ignore it because Spyderco uses good materials and is a leader in pushing new steels etc. is kind of ludicrous. If anything they should be on top of an issue like this because they are an industry leader in many ways IMHO. Innovation may bring customers, but steadfast customer service keeps them.

I still hold out faith Sal will see this and step up.

Thanks fellas, I don't see anything wrong with trying to fix a centering issue. I've had many blades be off center and I just adjust them and fix them and all is good. It's such a hassle sending things back, I rarely do it. I don't really get the attacks on me over attempting to fix the centering and then ultimately sending it in. Yes I could have just drove my self 3 hours to smkw or mailed it to them, I don't think choosing to go the route I did makes me an idiot or a Karen. Kinda baffled that's even a take, honestly.

This was my learning experience from the Schempp Bowie episode I posted a few pages back.
Whenever I open a box for the first time (whatever the brand) I assume a knife is the best it’s ever going to be. If I can't live with it “as is” at that very moment, it goes back.
I may tinker with it later, but that’s my baseline acceptance process.

Someone told me the other day that "Karen" and "boomer" memes are cleverly curated anti-white propaganda... now I think differently about them.

Also, sometimes complaints are justified. This is one of those cases. Spydercos ain't cheap.
If you accept that premise, of all the blatantly anti white sentiment these days those two seem fairly trivial.

I haven't sent any Spyderco's back. Have a few that aren't centered but they favor the side I press on to open the blade so if anything it's increased clearance to the side it's most likely to rub on (cope, I know). There is a brand that I quit buying online due to the frequency of returns for poor quality and finishing. Yes they still functioned as knives but these knives are heavily marketed as collectibles so I had a different expectation for finishing. Not having good selections locally and having sent several back to the manufacturer when the retailer didn't have a suitable replacement of a harder to find model only to, like the op, have them returned effectively unchanged soured me on the company enough to no longer seek out their knives. Their mix of models, materials, quality, price, etc... wasn't appealing to me anymore.

This seems more like a one off, I probably would have returned it. Sucks that Spyderco didn't improve the issue when it was sent back, but again lots of variables and potential explanations. Making a mountain out of a mole hill but that's what discussion forums are good for after all.

Can you quote where that was said?

If it was my comment you are referencing, the point was that Spyderco spends money is several areas other companies don't, not that we need to turn a blind eye to questionable QC, fortunately this seems to be the exception not the rule.

Your initial attitude and assumptions of non existent implications along with there being other arguably much easier ways to handle the situation is what earned you that response.

Drive there, did you buy it in person like that? If so that was a bold move Cotton. :)

Probably the way to go with companies that don't support their products.

Looking at your pictures it does look extremely close. I can understand why you’re not happy with it. I can’t understand why spydyco didn’t at least try to make it better. I guess they don’t mind having dissatisfied customers and a unfavorable reputation. I guess it’s a sign of the times. 😞

Spyderco needs to compete in the same market as all of the other manufacturers. They need to up their game instead of deflecting complaints with “how does it cut”. I applaud their willingness to try new steels and to maximize heat treatments for those steels. But, perhaps they have leaned a bit too far into that if their QC and support suffer as a result.

I say this as a fan who owns thousands of dollars’ worth of their products.
