One pocketknife isn't better than another just because it costs more. ;)

But if you become educated and make wise choices, like we do here, then I contend that: Yes They Are!

They can be, but it ain't necessarily so. Sometimes supply and demand pushes the price of a knife (or an entire line of knives) far beyond what they're actually worth. Knowing how much you should pay and not getting caught up in market frenzy is a part of becoming educated and making wise choices.

Looks like I'm the first to post 1000+ :). I'm not actually sure how many I have but I'm pretty sure its just over 1000. Been collecting for around 41 years (I'm 48). I've purged my collection of pieces I no longer want twice: once at age 16 and once at age 24. I don't think I've had less than 40 knives since I was around 12 years old! I don't collect any brand or style in particular, but I have lots of knives from Buck, Becker, Kabar, Cold Steel, RAT (no ESSEE though), Queen and related companies, Case, Randal, Gerber (70s & 80s era), old Schrade and old Camillus, and lots of customs. I have anywhere from 1 to 5 knives from just about all other major knife makers I can think, like Kershaw, Benchmade, Spyderco, Dozier, Enzo, ZT, Boker, SOG, AG Russell, and many many others I can't think of. I've only ever used around twenty of them, and I've given some away. I did separate around 200 of them a few years ago with the intent of selling them, but I haven't got around to it yet.

Thanks for sharing.. grew up in an urban setting.. and just starting to really get into it.. your comment also helps because it allows me to crunch some #s based on the responses so far.

#s based on the first 80 responses..

Avg collection is about 80.5 knives**
Median/midpoint of respondents is about 33 knives**

1 in 40 respondents own over 500 knives
1 in 16 respondents own over 250 knives
1 in 6.7 respondents own over 100 knives
1 in 3 respondents own over 50 knives

2 out of 3 respondents own less than 50 knives

**assumes that # of knives owned is evenly distributed within each option
HARDLY SCIENTIFIC.. But gives a very rough idea so far..

It seems like there are a disproportionate number of knife Users in the General forum compared to Collectors and Accumulators, and perhaps General has a younger audience as well. I wonder how different the results would be if you posted the same poll in the Traditional forum where, I would guess, the audience is older and has been collecting for more years. Or if you posted the same poll in a Collector-oriented forum area like the Schrade or Buck sub-forums?

Just thinking out loud...

I use a slightly different tactic. I buy my wife expensive jewelry. Then she reciprocates by buying me expensive knives or at least not getting on my case when I buy them. And I NEVER hide a purchase from her. In fact, she handles the checkbook. Maybe that's why we've been together for coming up 40 years.

It's amazing how well things work when everybody plays fair. ;) :D

If I had to guess, I'd say this is why you haven't had to bug out, yet. Wise words.

Had 3-4. Joined BladeForum I then had 15-20. Discovered CRK I now have 1BM 1Spyderco and 4 CRKs with 2 more CRKs arriving soon.
Damn this obsession is a bitch.

True. But that's the price you pay for having good taste. ;) Now if you can just avoid getting into customs . . . :D

I now have 13... with 9 on "the wait"

I have looked into some customs, but at those prices I can buy a very nice CRK and still have 600 bucks in my pocket. I may be a knife nut but I'm not spending a mortgage payment on a knife. Not gonna happen............

Just goes to show that some of us are sicker than others. ;)

Its all relative. Who's sicker? The guy who owns 100 $40 kmives, the guy who owns 20 $200 knives, the guy who owns 4 $1000 knives or the guy who owns one $4000 knife?

You can get a pretty sweet custom for not much more than a CRK. John W. Smith's knives are perfection and usually under $700 easy.

51-100
No exact count but off the top of my head;
11 Benchmades alone and another 10 Opinel.......
