I have 73 knives. I've used most if not all of them at one time or another. I have customs and fixed blades, folders and autos. I like knives. I plan to pass them on to my sons who have used some on camping trips. Cheers knife aficionados, stand up proudly and be seen. ✋

5 Spyderco Folders, each with a purpose:

Spyderco Sage 1 - Urban EDC for School and Office
Spyderco Sage 2 - Urban EDC for School and Office
Spyderco Salt I - Gym, Sweat, Swimming, All things wet, hiking folder
Spyderco PM2 - Anytime im not in school, office or gym (a.k.a.weekender)
Spyderco Stretch Super Blue - Travel Knife, Road- trip knife, beater knife, for any time i dont want to risk loss or damage to the other 4

3 Fixed Blades, each with a purpose

Benchmade 162 Bushcrafter - Large Fixed blade for long hikes, camping
Robert Dark Custom Hunter - Shorter Hikes, trips to the beach
Alan Folts Custom Minimalist - Small fixed blade for back-up to a folder, road-trips

3 kinda useless knives...would love to sell or trade cause i never use these

CRKT Bowie Minimalist - hand sharpening practice, strop practice, lending to my girlfriend knife
JoshRG Necker - A beautiful custom piece, a shame i don't use it at all because i have my folts minimalist
Cold Steel Pendleton Mini Hunter - Has no place in my life because of the Robert Dark Custom Hunter

I'm missing some options:
- not enough.
- too many.
- too many to count.
- you don't want to know
:)

I have about 45 knives, about 10 of those are broken or low quality knives, the rest is in excellent condition.
10 of them are fixed blades, the rest are folders...

I chose 26 to 50. My buying has slowed considerably in the last few moths. Almost all of what I own gets used or has been used. Some don't get carried as often as others though.

If we're counting multitools or strap cutters then a touch higher. When I lived near Ft. Bragg I could get Ontario and Benchmade rescue hooks 3 for $5.00. When I worked third shift, outdoors, I would hand them out to EMS and LEO if they didn't have one. A career change has brought me inside and left me with more than a few.

#s based on the first 80 responses..

Avg collection is about 80.5 knives**
Median/midpoint of respondents is about 33 knives**

1 in 40 respondents own over 500 knives
1 in 16 respondents own over 250 knives
1 in 6.7 respondents own over 100 knives
1 in 3 respondents own over 50 knives

2 out of 3 respondents own less than 50 knives

**assumes that # of knives owned is evenly distributed within each option
HARDLY SCIENTIFIC.. But gives a very rough idea so far..

Reran the #s based on 200 respondents and things haven't changed much..

For example the median/midpoint (statistical 'normal') went from 33 (with 80 respondents) to 34 (with 200 respondents)..

So with 200 responses, half of respondents own less than 34 knives and half own 34 knives or more.

There is no way of estimating the average # of knives based on 200 respondents cuz we don't know how many more than 1000 the 2 new 1000+ respondents own..

For Christmas my fiancé bought me a ten knife nylon travel case to keep my folders in. I just happen to have ten folders. So now I'm in trouble. It either means selling a knife to make room for/help pay for a new one, or hiding my purchases. I don't like hiding things from her, but with at least 3 knives on my radar, it looks like I may be in waist deep.

Here is my sub-collection of Schrade Old Timers. It represents about 30% of my reported knives.

Swiss Army Knives, about 5%.

Although this is a set of ten, it's counted as a single knife in my catalog system.

These Bark River Tanto knives account for .0037% of the entire collection. :D

My wife says "honey, I haven't seen that knife before..." I say "honey, I haven't seen those shoes before..."

Answer to question; I don't know.

Very cool and I appreciate the pics. It's always neat to see collection pictures IMHO as you often wind up learning about "new" knives that you might not have seen before...:thumbup::thumbup::)

One more pic; it's the inside of a cabinet I built in my mancave out of scrap wood I picked up. This pic shows the magnet rack I built (solid oak & neodymium magnets) that holds a few of my fixed blades inside the cabinet.:thumbup::thumbup:

I don't abuse knives either, not the ones I paid $11 for, as well as the ones I paid $200 for. Mine are almost all users as well. As luck would have it, I just put a noticeable scratch on my ZT0550 since my last post - the most visible wear and tear it's had thus far - ACK! But I carry it, it's a user and I love it just as much as I did before that happened.

I think most of us want the best quality that we can afford, whether it be knives, vehicles or dining out. We just all have different personal limits on what we consider "reasonable" for each category - and sometimes when presented with what seems to be a good value or a rare or limited opportunity, we splurge.

Thanks for your perspective.

Back to the topic at hand, of the 85 knives I currently have in my "collection", I paid an average of about $25 each. The least I paid was a dollar and the most expensive knife I have is a ZT 0561 - still LNIB even now. The one that I think gave me the most "bang for the buck" was my Ontario RAT 1 that cost me $29.59 OTD. I have carried that more over the past two years than any other knife I own, but I do change EDC a lot.

If I don't use it, I sell it. I'm just not an abuser. I don't put my knives in a situation where I think they would break regardless of the cost.

Loss is always a concern but they are insured and I take extra steps to make sure it's always on me.

When I was in college, I bought myself a $100+ pair of Person sunglasses. I returned them the following weekend because I was terrified of leaving them somewhere and being out $100+ which is a lot of money for any college kid. When I got a good job, I went and got me a pair of Oakley's on clearance and told myself that I wouldn't buy another pair of sunglasses unless I priced to myself I wouldn't lose them. When I got into knives I did the same thing.

Also, when you have something cheap, I think you're more likely to lose it because it has less perceived value and therefore demands less of your attention. If you have a $200+ knife in your pocket, you'll be more careful and pay more attention to it than a $15 gas station knife.
