how much are YOU willing to spend on a knife? Just curious.

As a self employed electrical contractor living in the northeast, my budget is about 1/10 what it was about 3 years ago. You wouldn't even want to know what I have spent on fly rods when times were better.

$200 is about my limit for a non-custom knife and $500-$600 is about tops on a custom blade. I would have to want it real bad.

$150-$200 is usually where I start asking myself what other things I want I could get for the money.

Most I have spent is $400, but I could see spending more.

As far as knives in general go though, I think that once you get above about $200, you are in the realm of diminishing returns.

I will not go over $150. At any price above that, I wouldn't be able to push myself to use it. This is the reason I do not own any CRKs, Hinderers, Striders, Busses, etc.

Money's hard to come by, as I have lots of student loans to pay off.

As a 24 year old with a somewhat steady income and relatively few expenses, I probably have more free cash than is good for me right now...

Case in point: my newly purchased CRK Mnandi with snakewood inlays. $386 shipped, I believe. It's effin' awesome though, I love this thing.

There are also a couple of Busses in my collection, though they're not as pricey as the CRK. I struggled a bit with the decision to purchase it, and that's probably on the upper end of what I'd pay for a knife -- whether custom or production.

I probably wouldn't spent over $200 for a single knife.

same here. unless it's something real good. like a strider. but i'd only get 1 maybe 2 :). recently purchased: cqc-11 emerson ($186) and ZT0301 ($190). both, magnificent knives. with that said. i use my knives. i'm not saying there's anything wrong with buying doubles of a knife and keeping one behind at home, but you're forking over money for a knife that should perform and excel it what it does. that said. $200 - $250 on production knives. $400- $500 on customs.

It really depends on what knives I have that I'm willing to sell. Whatever they are worth is what I'll spend on a knife. I'm trying to not spend any additional money on knives now. Key word, trying.

That said, I have some expensive customs but I've never been able to cross the 900 dollar mark.

So far, $425 has been my limit. That was for the Ken Coats custom in my watch pocket right now. No, I don't have a problem using a $400 knife.

it would have to be a very, very special knife for me to go over ~$250.

if we're talking swords, then it would have to be a very special sword for me to go over ~$1,500.

mind you, i only buy user blades, no safe-queens or investment blades.

i tend to spend in spurts but have not gone over the $200 mark on a single blade though have gone 3-400 on a couple blades at a time. ive certainly spent enough on knives in the last 12 months to of bought 2 striders and 2 sebenzas, but cant quite bring myself to buy either. i think thats partly due to there being low bang for your buck, and maybe partly because at the times i may of had impulse to buy one there are none available. At the moment i have a zt 0300 on its way and a email confirming my Hest folder should be shipping any day now. woohoo. so combined thats getting close to 400.

If it's over $100 I have to be really sure that I want it.

I think I would spend $200 max if I really fell in love with something.

I'm thinking I would probably top off at $2K but it would have to blow my socks off.

I had to reread the OP to make sure what the question was, so here goes.

My current max spent for a knife was $400 for some custom users but for the right maker and knife I could see to spendin' $1500, the more liquid cash I have available the higher the amount I'd be comfortable spendin'.

The problem with settin' limits on the amount one spends on a knife is that you eventually reach that max and with time become more comfortable spendin' that much so you move onto the next plateau.

$400-$600-$1000-$1500-$2500, it'll never end, you'll always be able to justify the move onto the next higher amount.
