Got the blades stripped and squared the spine on the BK4. I found it's very difficult to strike sparks off a small ferro rod with a BK4.
Keep the blade stationary, and pull the ferro rod across it. I do it all the time.

In other news, if anyone wants to practice building debris shelters or starting fires, come on over. I spent all day cutting small trees and clearing brush and have a giant pile of suitable material, free for the taking.
