WW, there's a buddhist practice called tonglen; it's basically sitting and connecting with suffering, both mine and yours (everyone's). Did a little last night, friend.I got a bad and sad call tonight. Dont really want to go into details but my family could really use a little smoke and prayers from those willing.
People sometimes have a hard time with that, especially when someone asks "how did you make this?" and the are expecting some sort of accurate accounting of what's in whatever you made. Thos kinds of people are generally a little teed if you say, "well, rice, some coconut milk, fried onions & pineapple, some pigeon peas.....some spices and just, you know, taste it until you get it right." Some people can not cook without a recipe, and have to follow it with measuring spoons! I am with you, C-bear. If I look at a recipe, I see it as merely a suggestion, or a starting point, maybe just some info on something I might not have cooked before. No one in my family complains, although I'm trying to figure out how to teach my kids this method of "seat of the pants" kitchen skill. To be fair, I can't follow a recipe for nothing! I just make stuff up as I go along.
Oh. And knives. You can't cook without knives. Just takes the fun right out of it.
