I remember why I stopped carrying SAK's

I've carried a SAK Tinker for many, many years and never had it open in my pocket.

Rich

It's happened to me a whole lot. Often it opens up in my pockets and I don't notice till I put my hand in my pocket and get bite or poked. I know for sure it happens. One time I remember I pulled the lanyard out my pocket to gets my keys which knife is attached to key ring, proceed to start car and see the blade is at half way pulled out.

I've had one close on me a couple of times...but never open when I didn't want it to.

Sorry that happened, as mentioned, maybe the lanyard has something to do with it. Maybe when pulling on the lanyard, a string in the pocket or an object catches the point on the way out.

I'll add my voice to the others and say that this makes no sense to me. Are the springs broken? 'Cause the backspring should be holding it shut.

Looks like the spring might be too gunked-up with your "tobacco" resin.

There's no way that should be happening, until you reach the half way point the blade has a bias towards closure due to the backspring. Its not going to just fall open unless there's been a mechanical failure of the backspring.

I'm sorry but in 50 nears of carrying Victorinox SAK's, and most of my family carrying SAK's, I've never seen or even heard of anything like this happening. My bull hockey meter is pegged at the far end.

Unless a spring is actually broken, it is impossible for a slip joint action pocket knife to open in the pocket without some kind of outside influence or mod to the knife that buggered up the function.

100% agreed Carl. I also have never saw a SAK that the blade set so high it could catch on something and open. As a matter of fact I've never saw one that the kick needed filed and I've carried them since the late 60s. I think your bull hockey meter is correct. :D

Welcome to the world of weird. That's totally unheard of... until now!

I have never in my life had a sak open in my pocket. I have went to close them and the little ring get in the way from it closing properly and if it got tossed in a pocket that way then yeah i can see getting nipped. But that is the scissor end and not nearly as stabby.

Those little ones have the weakest springs. I suggest you bump it up a notch in size. Perhaps something like the Cadet. I have NEVER had a Vic SAK open in my pocket and I have carried one almost daily since the mid-1980's.

Some of the tools like the nail file are rather weak and I have one that it essentially just opens on it's own from gravity. Trash time from my point of view.

lanyard or not, never had a SAK open in my pocket in all these years...

Fascinating. I've had a Classic that I carried in my pocket as well as an Executive and never had either open on its own. I've got a Rover on my car keys (keys don't get carried in my pocket, though), which get dropped more frequently than I care to admit. The scales have lost chunks, but the blade's never come open on me.
