I thought these were overbuilt? Direware lock fail (brand new knife)

I have to be candid here, this thread has made me laugh, genuinely "EL OH EL" multiple times, and it did it again just now when you actually are sitting here telling us you spent over a thousand dollars on a knife specifically for "wire stripping".

I mean, I don't even know what to say at this point other than to keep the laughs coming!
Buying a 1k knife to strip wire...damn.
He should just get a cheap spyderco with M4 or a similar steel. Even 4V can handle all those tasks. The compression lock is very strong. The pm2 is great at most utility tasks. And decent for self defense if you want to go there.
Psssh, that's just classically attractive and practical. You aren't going to pull the Instagram likes* with that trash, come on now.

*Literally the primary reason why companies like Direware, Heeter, and Lucky13 exist.
Heeter and lucky13. Yikes.
I could agree that the worth of the Spine Whack test is debatable, but what the OP's video shows is the lock failing the "light palm taps" test. Completely different level of fail imo.
Spine whacking is a terrible idea. See my earlier post.

Again you have serious reading problems. I didnt just say wire stripping. I said "cutting thick plastics, drywall, stripping wire" all of which the hawk bill are very good at.

You have proven to not be able to read in complete sentences so I can see why you "EL OH EL" your way through this thread and others.

Good luck making that argument. As correct as it may be, it fails on this forum ... about as often as frame locks fail to hold against light palm taps.

Which is a heck of a lot.

All of which could also done by any number of sharp knives. Listen, man. You bought a crap knife that's not good for anything, after everyone here advised against it in your other thread, where you were asking for advice*. When I saw your video, I laughed. It was exactly what you deserved. I can read just fine, I'm just continuing to "EL OH EL" at your ridiculous attempts to justify your way into having bought a $1,000+ piece of garbage. But no, tell us more about this wonderful knife that was supposed to do a bunch of things no other knife in your extensive (as you claim) collection could do. Incidentally, all those things you list, cutting plastics, drywall, etc? I've done ALL of those tasks with a $90 Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter and it held up just fine. So, let's not pretend that those tasks require a Buyer(be)Ware, ok?

LMAO

*advice which might I add, someone with an actual extensive knife collection wouldn't need.

Hey bro, this guy has all the answers. It's our reading comprehension issues, not his. LOL

Which of these involves spine whacking your hand?
Thought we all agreed spine whacking is dumb. Dude if you want to spend a grand on a robust knife you think is bad ass then by all means do you. But it doesn't matter if the handle is a slab of. 250 titanium. Or a .50 ti liner If the lock engagement is only .010 then that's all the "strength " the knife has. Period.
So many knife and gun guys love in the "what if" fantasy world to quantify spending money on cool shit.
Just buy what you want and be done with it!

It doesnt only fail with spine taps it falis with simply negative pressure which happens occasionally when cutting drywall and plastics.

Ok, you keep giving us "what if" tasks and scenarios, then when someone comments on it you say that's not what I'm really going to use it for. So please, just tell us what you are actually going to use the knife for. Be as specific as possible so you can get useful answers.

What is it you do for a living? Or a hobby where you will use that knife?

Youre reading comprehension is trash my man because I never tried to justify my purchase I asked if it was constructed well enough to withstand hard use as opposed to just being a piece of art. (exact words). Secondly, I said i know there are other knives which are cheaper and probably better but I want to know about this specific one. I asked about "direware i didnt ask hey what knife is better for this?" or "what knife is better value?" or "whats a cheap knife that can handle these tasks?" I specifically asked about the Dire ware Solo.

its funny that you literally do not understand that. I dont want your cold steel, I am not interested in that knife. I was interested in this one. and im not justifying anything at all actually the opposite i have stated that i am disappointed already and have already returned it to the seller. So please point to where I justified it or did justify the purchase?

as for what i wanted to use it for, I likened the activity to bushcrafting bc that is an aggressive form of using a knife akin to construction work which is what I would have used it for OCCASIONALLY, which I stated. i should have said construction work but that doesnt exactly convey the idea of hard use to many ppl so I said "such as bushcrafting" or "like bush crafting"

So yes you have a serious reading and comprehension issue. I never justified it the purchase and clearly stated that its expensive and am aware there are better options. I never claimed or was ever saying anything about how "wonderful" this knife was or its capabilities. i never said I was going to abuse the knife. i never said it was my primary choice for bushcrafting, nor for construction work.

I did however ask if I had this knife while camping COULD it perform hard tasks like carving and wedging if absolutely needed. i did ask if it could withstand hard use OCCASIONALLY.

the whole point of the first thread was to se if the knife COULD withstand hard use. Not to investigate better options or cheaper ones. I specifically asked for Direwares abilities not for ppl to shill their preferred company.

You have a serious flaw in the way you think and hold yourself on a pedestal with how condescending youre attempting to be.

Ok construction, got it. I would not use that knife for hard use construction projects. You could maybe use it camping, but I would worry about the tip snapping off in hard wood or by twisting the wrong way.

Hey man, that's all great. Enjoy your thousand dollar knife with a lock that doesn't work. Terrible at being a hard use knife, but maybe it would make a great cigar cutter? :D

P.S. I didn't read this, because the excuses are becoming tedious.

no actually a thin blade geometry is idea for those tasks. Like a razor blade or box cutter type of thin.

Have you tried bending the lock bar in slightly and seeing if that works to resolve the issue? I would let the maker try and fix it before trying that though. But that has fixed some who have the same issues with zt's.

OP:

And the answer to all those questions was “NO”.

I don’t know about other people’s reading comprehension, yours included, but I do know a little bit about using knives. The knife you chose is so utterly impractical that it is clear to me, Crystal clear, that whoever designed it has no clue about practicalities, such as bomber locking mechanisms. You claimed you wanted a hard use knife, and actually wanted to buy what is basically an art piece, and you were surprised it didn’t measure up?

Maybe next time listen to the advice you have asked for. Even if it did work properly, I cannot conceive of a more irritating and stupid folding knife to rely on in a genuinely tough situation. Almost every aspect of it is just plain wrong.

You don't need to justify your knife. You thought it was cool. I buy stuff I think is cool, too. Keep it.

OR

It was never, ever, appropriate for "hard use" let alone bushcrafting or construction. It can't take a few taps on the spine. Send it back.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE.

I just hope that any adventure using one of those monstrosities never includes me. ;)

Great post. People should indeed get what they like, just ‘because’. I own an overbuilt knife only because I simply wanted it. The issue, as you have gently alluded to, is the bogus justification to a bunch of people who just don’t buy it.

The actual blade is really thin. The spine is "thick" but it is ground to a a pretty thin edge so it would have done fine in those tasks in terms of blade geometry. And no a box cutter type razor isnt that great on tough plastics and drywall you do indeed want a thicker knife for those two things.

Surprisingly, this seems to be a known issue with Direwares. I got one in a trade a while back, and when I was selling it, several potential buyers asked me if it will fail during a light spine tap. That one (fortunately) was fine, but it looks like bad lock geometry is a common problem for his wares.

If you want a hard use knife for $1000, get an AD-15 (or a used AD-10), as others have said. If you want a great looking $1000 knife that will stand up to use without failing on you, check out @ExtremAddiction 's work (since he posted earlier) - nicest knives in the "overbuilt" aesthetic you can get for around $1000.

Not quite. So, in the meantime while you're waiting for your money back, what are you looking at now? I mean, that survival, bushcrafting, construction work isn't going to do itself right?
