If the lock mechanism on my pocket knife breaks or fails while using the knife will my fingers be cut off?

Doubtful. I had a Cold Steel XL Voyager Tanto close on my index finger once. It cut the skin. Bandaid, and back to work, pretty much healed in a week or so. I know it was user error, but I can't remember exactly what I was doing. Maybe if I lost a finger I would remember. Pretty sure I just tried to close one handed while also distracted by something else.

David Mary David Mary , I knew there was something I liked about you (other than your amazing work, and the great conversation). I did the same thing with a Cold Steel XL Voyager Tanto earlier this year. Right across the knuckle on my right index finger. Pretty sure I nicked a vein or something. Let's just say a small mess was made. Took longer than a week to heal up, and longer than that for me to get feeling all the way back. But it wasn't a lock failure. It was 100% user error.

I knew this thread had a chance, but it's not quite epic...yet

I had a fake SAK close on my fingers while trying open a can of C rats...why I didn't use the can opener is a mystery to me. At last count I still got all my fingers.

I cut my thumb pretty badly with a SAK. One Christmas as a kid I got one from my dad, first thing I did was open the big blade, somehow I closed it with my thumb in the way. Very embarrassing since my dad had just told me to be careful.

You know, I have often found that with many people, the instant you tell them "be careful", or "slow down" or "hang on a second", their actions immediately speed up, often in proportion to the urgency with which the admonition is given.

What about carbon fiber tubes for knife making? I've given those away as straws before. ;)

I will say, most of my serious cuts have been fixed blades.

I've had stitches 4 or 5 times at least. Only one was a folder (slipjoint equal end...I was closing the blade without looking.....pushed o the wrong side)...not paying attention.

I've had stitches from fixed blades about three times.

Once I got stitches from a large rusty cowbell across the bridge of my nose. That one also gave me a concussion....and a lot of laughs from the Dr's and nurses.

I'm able to hurt my self with all kinds of things.
