If they're going to retire 15V, Maxamet, and Rex 121, what are they going to replace them with?

checking the sharpness with his finger pads.
I don't use it but that was a "thing" not too long ago . Three finger pads on the edge tells all .
aparently
I'm a flat of the back of my thumb nail person myself . I swear I can tell "just" shave sharp from multi curl hair whittling just by how the edge sinks microscopicly into my nail .
Better than Bess would by my motto (if I could figure out how to make money from it) .🤣

But on a more serious topic : 🧐
when comparing K390 with MagnaMax . . . my question is ; is it going to be as inexpensive to mass produce knives out of MagnaMax ?
I really like and use K390 and am for ever surprised at the low price of , say , an Endela in K390 ! ! !

MagnaMax SOUNDS more exspensive .
Is it going to be ?

It's not going to be "unobtainiam" so, I'm sure economy of scale will help. I can't predict what manufacturers are going to charge for their finished products of course.

MagnaCut was supposed to make M4, CruWear, 4V and 3V obsolete... yet it didn't happen sadly. (Sadly, because if it did - MagnaCut would have trully amazing performance).

I do have a MagnaCut knife, and I really like it's performance, but I use it as my sea knife, and for stuff that really does stress the blade - I still reach for 3V...

Obsolete was too harsh a word to use. If the whole "stainless K390" really holds true as in it has the properties of K390 and is at least decently stainless then I'm not saying I would never again buy K390 but it would sure lose it's current alure. The same thing of any other yesteryear super steel, VG-10, 154CM, or any of the rest that had their time in the sun as a best at the time. They are still fully functional steels but now we have better. And I just bought a new to me Spyderco in VG-10 so I certainly don't mean to sound snobby about it. If I did it was most unintentional.

some folks just love what I call unofficially "carbon" and "tool" steels and patinas and such. i prefer stainless more myself. Id expect same folks who love k390 will still love k390..even if there is a stainless equivalent version.

Can't deny that alure. I have several for that very reasoning. I carry them less as tools and more as something I just enjoy having. But living in the sweaty hot South and working around salt water I for sure prefer to carry stainless steels.

Suddenly wondering what color Spyderco will give to MagnaMax....? I don't know what color I would even want. I feel like it will be something that stands out as this will be their next premium steel choice.

Plum Crazy G10? Some kind of metallic texture and look G10? They have the aluminum foil G10 that's pretty eye catching but not sure a majority would like that. Something more neutral like an Ivory G10? Something besides G10 like a paper micarta? Would that be strong enough?

I'm sure I'm forgetting some but these should be off the list of available color options:

Blue = K390
Green = LC200N (also yellow under Salt line)
Yellow = SWalt series steels
Blurple = S110V
Cobalt blue = Spy27
Orange = Rex 45 / 121 (XHP ?)
Black = VG-10, BD1N, or 8cr in FRN / S30V in G10
Brown = 15V
Gray Dark gray = Maxamet / 52100
Tan Micarta / Light Gray G10 = Cru Wear

(do sprint runs count?)
Purple/Maroon = PD1
Red = 4V
Jade G10 = MagnaCut

A darker gray than Maxamet would be good. They won’t use dark green because of the exclusives, sadly.
I'm dying here but wasn't there a dark green FRN??? Duh, a search later... British racing green or Kelly racing green was ZDP-189. Not sure if that was a sprint run or not. Probably. I remember kind of wanting one but then hearing what a pain to sharpen it was.

But when I do a search for "Spyderco Dark gray G10" I see mention of what I assume were sprints of Elmax with Emerson Wave and then a mention of REX-76. I didn't mention that one above because I would have sworn I saw that in white G10 but couldn't remember but it was a sprint.

I'd be good with either color though.

The first waved Delica was a sprint in dark gray. It was sort of an unpleasant color. I’d hope for a more pure grey that’s darker than the light grey previously used.

I remember that BRG. That would be good color for MagnaMax.

I believe the bottom line is this: Will it really make a significant difference to anybody day to day? No, Except for the guys that have to have the new wonder steel to put in their collection. I have been getting along pretty well with most of the crappy old steels for the last 50+ years and putting them to as hard use as 95% of anyone. We will survive this crisis.

yep. some of us have real problems like having to sell our super yacht cause we cant dock it in monaco.......
Right? I had to give up the 55' Hatteras...

...now I only use inflatables.

(Okay, I was only on a 55' Hatteras when our dive team used it to train for finding dope or explosives attached to the keel of vessels at the port.)

The ‘80s must have been an exciting time!

This green's pretty dark and it's open.
