If you could only have one folder what would it be?

If you could only have one folder what would it be?

the one that does not exist but should be showing up on the market any time now.
Yah Right.
When pigs fly (Mrs. Piggy excepted).

This handle but longer / a bit bigger around but in a folder. Or similar in Titanium; yes seriously.

OK GET THIS KNIFE MAKERS : Torx screws with built in nylon stips so we don’t have to fart around with lock tite. Get busy I KNOW this is possible and has been around in other screws for thirty years.

This blade shape and length 4 inch ( could be 3.5) Lower knife in this photo. This was my original EDC that I carried for years and years. I am still trying to replace it with up graded materials. I'm still waiting . . .

The top knife in the same photo is very close; reground and much thinned Ti Lite.

That blade thickness (lower knife) ! ! ! 1.5mm ! ! ! You read it right dudes 0.060 inch I don’t need anything thicker. I’m not slaying Vikings here I am slicing up some food and breaking down trash for the dupster and doing some precision trimming of various materials. Any more thickness beyond 2mm is just IN THE WAY.

Steel M390 or any of the super wear resistant “V” steels as long as it is at least as or more wear reistant than M390. At this point I am, from limited person experience, unconvinced it exists.

Lock : frame lock is fine, or a compression lock but I operate it with my thumb rather than pinch it. I belive this was the original intended MO. Axis lock is fun to flip but in the field I find it rebounds. Frame lock or compression is more consistant and practical in use.

Carry method : ah that is a problem. This is a large THICK handled knife isn’t it ? Clip on pouch like this

or this (note flap tucked out of the way for ease of temporary holstering while working).

Pocket clip I guess but I like the clean feel of no clip such as the fixed blade Krey-Ex handles have.

Maybe throw some nickle on there and or some stag or ebony so I know I have a real knife and not some throw away modern thing from Walmart.

So . . . until I can get some such I have to have a whole drawer full of EDC just to be mildly content.
You see . . .

It would be my SAK one-hand opening trekker with non-serrated blade, closely followed by SAK Farmer.

As much as I prefer the 940 (or any variant of it) for edc..

If I were limited to only one for the rest of my life, as of today, I would go with a 730 for a beefier blade. M390 would be my edc choice for my cutting purposes.

It is an even better performer. I have grown very, very fond of the unique abilities of a full chisel tanto.

Now you're just showing off, OM :D

Agreed on the Emerson chisel tanto... my super 7 has not left my pocket since purchased.

If you could only have one folder what would it be?

That is a tough question to ask a blade maniac :D

Probably an Endura, or a Military.

In practical terms, I confront this situation anytime I travel, as I tend to only take one knife with me.

The knife I take has (for me) the best balance of handle and blade size. Small enough to be back pocket carried easily but big enough to fill my hand and big enough to handle 99% of the tasks I could ever throw at a folder.

The knife has the most robust joint of any knife I've ever used and seemingly entirely impervious to developing either lateral or vertical blade play.

The knife has the most reliable lock in that it works as designed even when entirely fouled by dirt and sand. (NOTE: the lock provides no meaningful protection against strong closing forces, which is fine.)

The knife is the safest knife to open and close of any folding knife I've ever used, as there is no spring mechanism and no activity in the blade. This helps when I'm tired and spent and still need to us my knife safely.

The knife has the most comfortable handle of any folder I've used, which is due, in part, to the ease with which the handle can be modified and customized. I flatten the sides of mine.

The knife produces the least amount of "social friction", allowing me to deploy and use it in just about any social context without concern.

Cost is of no object to me. I could easily spend 10 or 20 times what this knife costs.

The knife is the Opinel #9 Inox.

Couldn´t agree more with you

The Opinel has to be a good contender for all the reasons given. A few years back I met an old farmer who when I brought the subject of knives up he said his Opinel was plenty as he had had iit 20 plus years and he gralocks 5 deer a year, plus all the other things farmers do. I saw the knife and it had proof of time and use with plenty of life still in it. For him it was the Opinel. Can't really argue with that.

For me its the SAK, both Huntsman and penknives. They have done me proud for 30 years.

I do like the Leatherman Charge TTi, but its a bit heavy. I like my Large Sebenza, and my Blackjack Folding Mamba too. It really doesn't matter what large folder you like as most will become part of your integral style as you use them year on year. I think ease of carry, so not so big, and a keen cutting edge are what it takes to put them in the pocket every day. Maintain them and most will do fine for years. Most here live in a modern world and have all the tools for modern living, its not as if we are living in the stone age. There are so many folders being offered but to me the classics seem to " have it" with the track record to show, and I don't feel any huge desire to look much further. I want my knife to cut and the way I use them a lock isn't very important. In truth I would never trust a locking mechanism however bullet proof it was. Again, all I'm looking for is a keen cutting edge in a portable package, nothing more. Think thats what most people are looking for too.
Social acceptability plays an increasingly important part, which is why a SAK with corkscrew is important to me, bottle opener too.
