If you had to pick one knife to carry forever...

While my first instinct is to choose one of my favorite folders, like my CF Insingo 21, or a fixed blade like my custom Ratmandu, I know that the smartest answer would be:

This Farmer would do everything I could need a knife for.

Another vote for the Alox Farmer. You could go to war with that SAK. It would be tough to leave my Spyderco Military behind though.

After seeing the different great knives above i can't even imagine having only one knife :D but if i really have to pick one from the few knives I have right now... maybe it would be the Kershaw Blur :o

I think my rodent solution is small enough to conceal easy, short enough not to scare sheep, tough enough to get most jobs done.

My Ak47 bayonet :D

Out of the knives I own, definitely my Paramilitary 2. The knife is so light but it's also the strongest most solid lockup I've experienced. Combined with a good steel and great ergonomics and easy one hand open/close its great.

However if we are talking about really only 1 knife FOREVER, it would have to be a fixed blade with a belt sheath. Something with a 5 or 6 inch blade I would think. I really like the way those ESEE knives look but I have not used one. Something like that though. Can't be stuck with a folder if we are really talking about only 1 blade :). Realistically this wouldn't happen, so in terms of 1 folder and 1 fixed blade my answer is the same. Para2 + ESEE mid sized fixed blade or something similar

The funny thing is, the knife that of all others I actually have carried most of my life to date is... the Vic Classic.

More accurately, it's been a series of them, because the Classic is just not a knife for the ages, except in the design sense. With daily carry, most of them fail, typically for me around the five-year mark. Currently, I have a short collection of serviceable ones; the green job is onboard today:

But if I could have only one for the rest of my life, well, at this point it might be this:

A Wenger Highlander (with scales swapped from a Wenger Evo 18).

If for some reason I got nervous about durability, I might choose either the Wenger Standard issue (middle knife) or the Vic Pioneer (second from top):

I love my Buck 110s and 112s and the 55 and the Canoe... But in the end, those are just single or double blade jobs.

This is a really tough question... I'm trying to think of a knife that would serve the most amount of purpose for me while still retaining some aesthetic beauty. I'd like to pick a custom, but they're usually more flashy than utility... I'd like to pick a fixed blade, but if I'm only given one to carry forever I'd like to have something that isn't too big nor require a sheath.

I guess I'd pick an RHK XM-18 Skinner... awesome looking, fully functional, easy to disassemble & I'd be able to swap the handles when I got bored to make me feel like I had a new knife!

The thread question may be the only scenario that would make me consider pulling my Large Sebenza from the drawer where it's lain for years.

Oh man, EChoil! Unless you're prone to losing your knives, drag her out and use her! Sebbies only get better with use (like a pair of jeans!) :)

Agreed I carry it in conjunction with what ever else I have on me daily.

You beat me to it. I was going to say Huntsman, but the Farmer is just too handy and just the right size.

I'd die choosing.

At least i got to be with them all till the end.

now i am starting to sound a little crazy...

" Good choice. But remember, a large knife can perform small tasks better than a small knife can perform large ones. "

Maybe so , but I like to carry a knife with me all the time . If I can have only ONE knife for the rest of my life I wouldn't want to have to carry a big heavy knife all the time . Any folder will wear out over time . Especially if it's the only knife you have to use for everything . And carrying a big fixed blade into the bank , or hospital or many public places in more urban settings is NOT widely accepted .

My little Game Warden will fit in my pocket , has no moving parts that will wear out and the chances of breaking a piece of INFI steel that .170" thick and just under 7" long is HIGHLY unlikely . So short of loosing it I WOULD have a knife that would last my lifetime with me at all times .

While I haven't had to go to the bank recently I have been carrying my buck pathfinder for about four months know with absolutely no problems. While I don't know where you live, in the suburbs of Houston it's acceptable.

It's hard to beat an SAK for this question. Another vote for the Farmer, second from left.

My Emerson CQC-&, because it will take the most punishment. Second choice is my Spyderco Rescue Jr. Thast retired, and I still have. The Emerson sent it to my draw for a rest. I also have a Spyderco Native Fully Serrated that is in retired status.

In a pinch any knife is better than NO KNIFE.
