I'm going to ask buyers to pay Paypal fees if they require the same from their buyers

When selling, my asking price is figured with my costs included. Not necessarily enough to cover all my costs but at least I am not asking the buyer to include 3-4% in hopes that they can figure that out or are not put off by it.

This forum is the only place I have seen where the seller asks for his paypal fees to be paid by the buyer. Just include the fees in your asking price if it's going to break you as a seller.

This was a general statement, not directed at the OP.

I think your over thinking it.

Nope, just tired of being expected to cover fees when buying AND selling. I'd like to see the guys always demanding that buyer pays fees to take some responsibility here. :)

The sellers requiring buyers to cover the sellers fees are already killing much of the fun of knife buying....

As soon as I see "net to me","paypal gift", or "add 3% for paypal fees" I disregard the thread. I believe that none of this should be allowed on the exchange but it does save me money.

Same here.

Personally, I think it's annoying when people expect YOU to figure out what you owe THEM.

That said, 3% of the average paypal fee is often so negligible, I don't see what the problem is.
You're still making money on the sale.

But hey: if you absolutely can't live without the $6 you're losing on your $200 knife, then charge $206.19 and get your price.

I don't see why there's a hesitation to list the inclusive price if you're actually expecting an inclusive price.

This^

Sad thing is buyers are so used to paying the fees, they'll always pay "gift" & leave their address in the memo box.How hard could that be for pp to figure out & block my acct.?
It's gotten to the point where I can't just state "paypal" but have to write out "regular paypal for goods/services"(Fees on me!) in my sales threads.

Stop screwing the system & eat your 3% for using their service. You'll be sorry when you have to go back to checks & MO.

Kudos to you OP:thumbup:

I work for a very large credit card processor. It may be wise to freshen up on the laws of asking for "fees to be paid." The laws, I believe, differ from state to state, and they have recently changed nation wide. It MAY be illegal to ask for fees in specific states. It would seem to me, as almost all businesses do, to include the percentage of processing costs in the price of the product being sold.

It has been said before, and I know that the staff of this site is getting tired of hearing this, but I am in the camp of those who feel that site rules should cover this issue. It is absolutely true that the staff of this site should not have to police policy for PP. But it seems that it would be fairly simple to require that posts never include the "pay by gift" scheme. People only do this to make their item seem cheaper or to remove protection for the buyer. Staff would then be monitoring content of the post and not policing PP policy.

There simply is no valid reason for asking people to bypass their PP agreement (essential a contract between the user and PP) by fraudulently stating that the money is a gift when it is indeed payment for goods. Include the fees in the price and be done with it.

JMO.

and there you have it.Very well stated

asking someone to pay an extra $9 on a $300 knife purchase seems a little petty to me-esp. considering anywhere else is going to charge you anywhere from 12-25% to sell the knife.

I do the "all fees included" thing, it makes things so much simpler. What gets me is when someone asks for a shipping fee since most items sold here have to be shipped anyway. It would make more sense to offer a discount if someone came and picked up the item.

When using paypal, paypal fees are a business cost. As such, thinking that the seller is going to just take those on the chin out of the goodness of their heart seems sort of naive. In essence those that think that the seller should pay paypal fees are saying "please include paypal fees in the price of the knife sold." Sellers can and will certainly do that.

I think that the general idea used to be that the seller was giving you a choice:
1) Pay with paypal, and pay the fees for the convenience.
2) Don't pay with paypal and save the money.

The sentiment here seems to be don't give the buyer such a choice and instead just raise the price to cover paypal fees. Again, I'm sure that can and will happen if this "seller pays" thing catches on.

As for the whole "Bladeforums should outlaw the gift option." thing. How in the world do we expect Bladeforums to police that? Do you want them to start kicking people out that someone accuses of using the gift option? How about a little personal responsibility instead? If you use the gift option you may lose your money with no recourse. That's a deterrent for most people, and if you do it anyway and get burned... sounds like a stupid tax to me.

I agree. Paypal gift shouldn't be allowed and sellers shouldn't make buyers cover the fees.

They can set up search terms. It's not difficult.

So I guess, by your reasoning, PayPal itself is naive as they expect sellers to pay the fees and expressly forbid that they ask the buyers to cover them?

PayPal is convenient for the seller, that is why the seller pays the fee.
