I'm Making My First Knife/WIP

When the last project like this was done by Fletch helical ( Matt), there were mane following along and doing it as it was presented.

You forgot also likely giggling at my whole anal retentiveness about trying to make step perfect as I went.

This is probably a stupid question, but over the years i have bought a lot of gun/blade scales. I finished a job not too long ago for grips for a 1911, and i don't know of any other way to say it than it smells very strongly. I don't know if i used g10 or micharta, but it is irritating as after 6 months every time i handle it i get the smell on my hands. Two questions, is this probably g10, or does certain kinds of micarta keep the chemical smell also? Thank you.

I would think that the resins used would fully cure and there would be no smell except when it's cut or sanded.

I am new to the forum so I have a question on etiquette
; I am learning here with weatherman and I dont want to hijack his thread but I was wondering if I could post a picture of a knife I am working on? I am hand filing it and I put the plunge to far forward. I could use some choil ideas.....

Best to start a new thread. Not only to avoid a hijack but likely get more help since you'll hit a bigger audience as a stand alone thread on the main page.

I am going to start today. I will post pictures of the work later when I have them finished.

Wish me luck....

Well I worked for 5 hours today. I didn't get as far as I wanted.

I started out by shaping the front of the handle and sanded that down to 800 grit. I made sure that the tang was flat and the ricasso. I then started to work on the Distal Taper and the bevel. I had to stop for the day because I got tired.

The bevel still needs a lot of work with the files.

Wow, you have some BIG scratches in there. Need to make sure you keep those files CLEAN. Basically, take a few swipes with the file, and hit it with the file card. Get some sidewalk chalk to rub on them which will help against them loading up.

Those scratches will haunt you in the end if you're not careful now.

Keep at it!

I still have ways to go to get to the sanding. The edges are the right size but I am still working on the slope of the bevel. So I hope I didn't mess up to much and I can get rid of those BIG scratches. I was using the cleaner for the files every few times.

I wont be to worried till I get to the sanding and I can't fix them.

But I will try using chalk.

I would try to get them out with files first, because you will be removing less material when you switch to sandpaper.

I have been really busy at work developing some equipment to use. Sorry. I plan on making some more time tomorrow so that I can do some more filing. I did get some chalk and plan on using to help with those big scratches.
