If I may ask a silly question, doesn't the Army give soldiers a knife? Should we also be sending rifles and ammo to Iraq?
I missed breakfast this morning, so I think I'll bite into a plump, thick, juicy worm. Never mind that it's on the end of a hook

Since SG appears to have been banned, this will be a oneway discussion.
As a soldier, and a taxpayer, I respect a disenting view, and feel that it deservse an answer. The short answer is "no." The Army does not typically issue soldiers knives. There are certain specialties that are provided knives. Aviators have survival knives and multi-tools in their flight vests, and the average infantryman
might get issued a bayonet.
Also, some units will purchase knives for their troops, but this is not the norm. In the interest of protecting the taxpayers $$, purchases for items such as knives and flashlights are closely scrutinized, and have to be thouroughly justified. As an example, I have attempted to order 50 BM griptillians 4 times since this time last year, and the request were refused at the brigade level each time. Most often, these request are denied bacause of insufficient funds. I am in an aviation brigade, and helicopter parts are expensive.
If a soldier wants a knife, he pretty much has to buy it for himself. It is not considered critical equipment. You'd also be shocked at the number of soldiers that don't carry a knife. Sometimes it's because they don't feel a need for one. Other times, it's because they don't want to fork over the cash for one. Also, alot of soldier carry
cheap knives.
My contribution to the cause was an edgepro sharpening system. I pull it out a couple of times a week and sharpen knives for the other troops. Given the crap alot of them tote in their pockets, they need to be sharpened often.
A drive like this to outfit a few troops with decent blades has a phenominal impact on the moral of troops every where. It really shows that plenty of folks support
them, regardless of their political views.
Thanks for this support, folks. And thank you, Scout Guy for your vigilance.
I've also included a picture of the knife shelf at the local PX. This is the largest PX in the area, and this is what the troops have to choose from. You'll note some mid-quality stuff, but you'll also note the junk, as well as the price of that junk. Nobody will ever accuse the AAFES buyers of having any knowlege of blades and steel
