Interested in donating a knife to deserving Soldiers?

I feel good to be a small part of this. Thx to Gus for giving me the opportunity.

If I may ask a silly question, doesn't the Army give soldiers a knife?

Should we also be sending rifles and ammo to Iraq?

Scout Guy,

If you want to donate, this is the thread to get info.

If you have problems or somthing smart-alec to write about what we are doing, start another thread and stay out of this one or you will be staying out of all BF threads.

Just a fact.

Gee, I ask a simple question and you guys get your hackles up. You must have small wee-wees.

Now, go ahead and show how small you really are and lock me out.

Bye.

From Jim Blackburn who is in command of an Armored Cavalry Squadron of 800men deployed to Baghdad, Iraq. He and his Command Sergeant Major were presented with two donated knives. As they near the end of their year in Baghdad they were presented the knives by CSM Brian Carlson and COL Jeffrey Snow of 1-10 Mountain Division.

The guys over there really appreciate all the knives being donated.

It is also good to put names and faced with the guys who put this together.

Cerberus:thumbup:

Excellent! What knives were they given? Any idea?

Good plan.

KV,

the knife on the left in the picture is a Greco Whisper and the knife on the right in the picture is a Greco blank that was finished by Charlie Porter that I picked up at the Spirit of Steel show here in Texas.

I sharpened the Whisper on my EdgePro to give it that extra cutting ability prior to shipping out. It was great to see the picture, and humbling at the same time. Brian said that he'd try and let me know who got them, but I figured he be to busy, but understandably so. He must be an orgainzing machine!

Zac,

Drop me an email and I will get you in touch with Command Sgt. Major Carlson.

He is on leave right now, but will be back in Iraq in a week or so. I know the multi-tool will be appreciated and used and that he will stay in touch as his time allows.

Thank you and everyone else who has helped out.

Gus

I missed breakfast this morning, so I think I'll bite into a plump, thick, juicy worm. Never mind that it's on the end of a hook:) Since SG appears to have been banned, this will be a oneway discussion.

As a soldier, and a taxpayer, I respect a disenting view, and feel that it deservse an answer. The short answer is "no." The Army does not typically issue soldiers knives. There are certain specialties that are provided knives. Aviators have survival knives and multi-tools in their flight vests, and the average infantryman might get issued a bayonet.

Also, some units will purchase knives for their troops, but this is not the norm. In the interest of protecting the taxpayers $$, purchases for items such as knives and flashlights are closely scrutinized, and have to be thouroughly justified. As an example, I have attempted to order 50 BM griptillians 4 times since this time last year, and the request were refused at the brigade level each time. Most often, these request are denied bacause of insufficient funds. I am in an aviation brigade, and helicopter parts are expensive.

If a soldier wants a knife, he pretty much has to buy it for himself. It is not considered critical equipment. You'd also be shocked at the number of soldiers that don't carry a knife. Sometimes it's because they don't feel a need for one. Other times, it's because they don't want to fork over the cash for one. Also, alot of soldier carry cheap knives.

My contribution to the cause was an edgepro sharpening system. I pull it out a couple of times a week and sharpen knives for the other troops. Given the crap alot of them tote in their pockets, they need to be sharpened often.

A drive like this to outfit a few troops with decent blades has a phenominal impact on the moral of troops every where. It really shows that plenty of folks support them, regardless of their political views.

Thanks for this support, folks. And thank you, Scout Guy for your vigilance.

I've also included a picture of the knife shelf at the local PX. This is the largest PX in the area, and this is what the troops have to choose from. You'll note some mid-quality stuff, but you'll also note the junk, as well as the price of that junk. Nobody will ever accuse the AAFES buyers of having any knowlege of blades and steel :)

I'll donate. I got the opportunity to serve along with the 10th Mountain in Somalia in 93-94.

Willie,

What a fantastic gesture of respect.
The CSM will be back around the 4th or 5th and I am sure you will hear from him, we just might have to wait until he gets caught up with everything.

In the meantime. Thank you for supporting those troups.

Gus

First off thank you all for what you are doing in supporting our military. For all that serve or have served I am grateful to you all for protecting my freedoms.

I was looking for information and found this website. I did not intend to post but I have to respond to this.

Response to Scout Guy:

“If I may ask a silly question, doesn't the Army give soldiers a knife?”
“Should we also be sending rifles and ammo to Iraq?”

Scout Guy no there are never silly questions but there are sarcastic stupid ones like yours. :thumbdn:

IE: Rifles and ammo too??? If that is not stupid and sarcastic what is!

Besides you were not really asking a question where you. It was a sarcastic comment disguised as a question. Be honest. But I am sure you have a problem with that.

Anybody who has the ability to find this forum would also know how to search the web before asking this question.
If you looked you could have figured that out. So we can determine it was a sarcastic remark to try and degrade our U.S. military.
So go and talk all you want somewhere else and remember your free speech is protected by those who you criticize.
Small? Small. Small!! Who are you calling small???? Small minded people are the cause of problems, right minded people solve those problems.:D

I have a large fixed blade knife I never use or carry that I wish to donate. I'll drop an email.
Pete
