Hello W & SS members, my name is Jeff. I've lived in Michigan most of my life, but have been fortunate enough to visit a lot of cool places on climbing and skiing trips over the last couple of decades. I had my first taste of survival skills training as a senior in college back in 1981. It was a semester long course called "Winter Camping And Survival". The "final exam" was to spend two nights in a frozen cedar swamp in northern Michigan using whatever we could stuff into a bandaid tin and a space blanket. I've been interested in this stuff ever since :D. The lovely lady in the photo is my wife of ten years and best buddy. She shares my love of the outdoors, so I don't have to look very far for a partner. Our favorite trips as of late have been really long day hikes and collecting state summits (when we can). This forum has been awesome for all the great ideas that it's given me and all the small custom knifemakers that I've been introduced to. Thanks to all.

Jeff

Howdy all! My name is Matt and I am a bit of a lurker. 39 posts in 3 years. I live in a small but strange town in Mendocino County, California(think Norman Rockwell meets bar scene in Star Wars) where I have a small tree care business. Well the business is small the trees are large.

I live with my wonderful wife Em and my 3 year old son Finn MacCool. Oh and my dog Bran. I am blessed that they all love the outdoors.

While I love everything outdoors, camping, hunting, hiking, shooting, archery, kayaking, freediving, primitve skills etc., most of my free time is spent traveling the seas forcing fish to submit to my awesomeness. I have been fishing since before I can remember and while I will pretty much fish for anything, anywhere, the ocean is truly my first love. I had planned to get my 6 pack capts license this year but the gov shut down all of our salmon season and most of our rock fish. Did I mention I like to fish.

I first started in on the survival skills in High School where I took a Biology class that focused on desert survival. At the end they dropped us in the desert. I think the interest in the outdoors kept me alive during my extremely reckless youth and provides a healthy outlet for adventure today that keeps me both physically and spiritually healthy.

I want to thank you all who participate so much on this forum for educating, inspiring and entertaining. I have been lucky to meet some people from this(IH8U) and other forums at campouts and had a great time. Anyone heading thru Redwood country feel free to drop a line. oakietree(at)gmail.com We'll go fishin'

Looking good, Doc!

The Kung Fu series was a great inspiration for me, too... I have met David Carradine a couple of times!.... My entire life path can be traced back to Kung Fu and Grizzly Adams re-runs!!!

We'll have to get together one of these days and talk "beard hygiene and maintanance" and how it relates to bush grub and black flies.... lol.

Thanks Rick... your kids are cute bro.... the boy has a cool smirk and the girl is so cute ,your lucky bro ! they grow up so fast !!!

I guess that I'll jump in, as this thread has been resurrected. I'm Chris and I'm 47 years old and married to the most beautiful woman in the world, with 2 great kids. We currently reside in Boynton Beach, FL and have lived here for the past 12 years. I originally hail from South Queens, NY.

My interests include bushcraft and hiking, archery, and tooling around on my motorsickle. I also enjoy IDPA tactical handgunning, and subgun shooting. When I was younger and more flexible, my passion was rock climbing and mountain biking. I'm also a BIG hockey fan. Let's go Rangers!

Adapting to the swamp for outdoor life was, and continues to be, interesting to say the least. I really enjoyed the cool air of upstate NY hikes and climbs. Down here, there is a definite emphasis on survival when it comes to hot weather hiking and bushcraft. You really have to stay well in tune with your body and stay hydrated and cool. Also, it is no real fun to make and sit by a fire when it is 93 degrees and 85% humidity. The fun definitely outweighs the disadvantages, though. The wildlife, especially reptiles, along with the tropical flora are awesome. Mangrove swamps and the emerald-green ocean are fun to play in. Always something to do, year-round.

I don't have many photos of me in the wild, as I usually go it alone. That is more by circumstance than by choice, as I really haven't made any friends who enjoy the outdoors down here. That is the only thing that I can't get past... No real buds to run with.

Anyway, that's my gig, and here are a few shots to put a face to the name.

Hello all,

I kind of have a hard time with online bios/introductions because I always get that “long walks on the beach” feeling. I’ll do my best to fight that instinct and post anyway.

My name is Brandon, I’m 27 years old married to Melissa and I’m watching my cell phone right now expecting a call from my wife who is, well, expecting. We were at the Dr’s office yesterday and I was basically guaranteed that by this time next week I’d be a father! To say the very least I’m excited.

As a kid in rural WV I spent a lot of time in the woods. Sometimes it would be building forts with friends, or hunting, camping, and fishing with Dad. This love of the woods led me to major in Wildlife and Fisheries at WVU. During college I had the opportunity to have the best “work” study job on campus. I was hired by WVU’s Outdoor Recreation Center to work in there gear rental shop. We rented outdoor gear and took students on a variety of weekend trips. This exposed me to outdoor pursuits outside of what Dad was interested in, such as backpacking and mountain biking. After some time with the ORC I was able to serve as an assistant trip leader on a couple of extended trips over winter and spring break.

After college I was hired on by the Natural Resources Conservation Service as a soil conservation technician. I’m incredibly blessed to have a job that I love and a wonderful family. I haven’t been able to spend as much time backpacking as I did in college, but I still try to squeeze a couple trips in every year and I do spend a lot of time outside, even if it’s just working around the property.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say that I love knives! I’m not a collector, although I certainly could be if I had the money (or if I quit buying guns!). I’m a big fan of “bargains”. Someone has a sig line saying that they’re more of a “knife whore” than a “knife snob”, and that’s definitely me! If I’m out of the house I usually have my BRKT Snowy River (bought used) or my Mora 711 with me as well as a Leatherman Wave or a Vic Farmer. If I can’t carry a fixed blade I might have a Benchmade Vex or an Outdoor Edge Magna in my pocket. If I’m spending the night in the woods I’ll add either a Fiskers hatchet or saw.
I’m definitely into “Puukko” style knives right now. I’ve been eyeballing some of Breeden’s and Koyote’s steel and I’ve got my eyes on a few more Barkies.

I’d also add that the folks on these forums seem to be some of the most generous that I’ve ever encountered online. You folks are truly first class.

Brandon

Ok...me...

I just turned fifty last week, not married, one daughter who is out of school and working successfully and on her own. Growing up we lived in the country in north central Indiana tho I was born in Texas. Seeing as we got two and sometimes three channels on tv I spent much of my free times in the woods on our property. When I grew up a boy was expected to have a jack knife in his pocket at all time. (how else can you play mumbly-peg*) We would play in the creek, try to dam it up for a swimming hole, swing on vines like Tarzan. climb trees, build fires (didn't tell the parents about that one...lol) and generally grow up. Later, around 13- 14, the trips in the woods started to include a 22 rifle for squirrel hunting. It wasn't unusual to climb on the school bus in the morning with a 22 rifle to go squirrel or rabbit hunting with after school let out on the way home instead if taking the bus. We would just drop the rifle off in the principals office during the day.

At age 16 I was removed from the woods I grew up in and went to St John's Military Academy in Delafield Wisconsin. About this time my family moved to Lansing so the woods would have been out of reach anyways. St John's was a boarding school and the treatment of plebes (new boys) was an exercise in physical and mental hazing...that year was not much fun needless to say. The next two years were much better however with sometime spent in the woods but things vastly improved in college. There I was on the Orienteering Team and had a blast competing all over the southwest. I learned map skills that would serve me well when I became a 19 Delta (Cav Scout). I continued shooting in Germany shooting on the rifle team for my Battalion. I serve both in the US and in Germany...my time in the military falling into a rare lull in the US being involved in combat...something I am very grateful for.

After the military I worked retail sales, owned a flooring installation company, and then joined my Dad in a family owned Gun Shop. I kept up the shooting and have shot in the world championships in several different disciplines. Trap, Skeet, Action Pistol, etc...I just loved shooting. Now I just compete locally and for fun but still enjoy trigger time at the range. I am also both a civilian as well as LEO firearm instructor and range officer instructor.

As I said knives were always a part of my life...I can't imagine not having one with me at all times. My collection fluctuates but is fairly large. I am constantly changing out my EDCs to give each pocket time...lol. I have had a fun life...eventful and reasonably full. I worry about my daughter's future a good bit especially with what is happening in our government today. I just try to have fun and keep young!

*for those too young to know what mumbly-peg is here is a link to the rules... http://www.inquiry.net/outdoor/games/beard/mumbly_peg.htm try it...it is harder than you think!)

My name is Adam, I'm 29, I am a carpenter and trained/certified counselor (funny combo). Next month I'll be joining my brothers and sisters in the US ARMY as an MP. I've been a lurker most of the time (could be read as more of a leech. Sucking all the knowledge and insight I can :D)

My hobies are flyfishing, bow hunting, 3-d competition, things that are sharp-pointy-goes bang-etc.., anything related to survival.

My name is Andy. I'm 27 and I've been screwing around in college for almost 10 years. I'm currently working on a BSN at LSU nursing school. I should graduate in December this year. I was always pretty involved with boy scouts and loved being outdoors. Although I grew up in GA outside of Atlanta, I now live in New Orleans. Somehow boozing and girls keep getting in the way of my outdoor activities, but I do what I can. I like guns, knives, tomahawks, and cars. And booze. And girls.
