Is it time to rehabilitate Cold Steel? CONTROVERSIAL

The Black Sable. Check out our Scimitar series from back in the day. We just took our Scimitar and made a Tanto point version. Mystery solved.
The Black Talon - It's a hawk's bill knife. Those designs have been around for centuries. See my comment below regarding historical designs
The GI Tanto - We've been making Tantos since the 80's. It's what we are known for. Tantos are kinda our thing. We added tanto point throwers to our line up some time ago.

The Black Sable and Black Talon are both Discontinued so they are water under the bridge... Dead history....

The GI Tanto was (IS) a direct copy of a Strider (A jab at Strider if you will) using a different steel back when Lynn was going after Mick and brought out his past history, everyone who knows that history knows about that one.

Most people aren't all that worried about that one because they know it was kind of a joke, and still is.

I don't know if they're improving or not, but I'm not that interested in their Tri-ad lock. I know it's really strong and all, but I'm just not a fan of lockbacks.

Damn good knives, IMHO. Don't have anything else from CS except blades (no shovels, whips, etc.) but the cutting tools I have perform as advertised. Lynn Thomson is one of the most innovative knife makers/designers around, and he can sit at my campfire any time.

...except the CS rep, who just said there was no copying, they just both happen to be tantos.

Can you honestly expect the CS rep to admit to that without stirring up that old ****storm again? Look at it from his position, what exactly is he supposed to say?

Why not just the balls to admit they made the knife as a screw-you to Strider? That would probably get them a lot more respect than acting like the knives are totally different. If that's what the knife is, be up front and honest about it, say something like "We wanted to show that we could do a similar knife(see:"similar"), but better AND cheaper." Don't do it then act all huffy and try to deny it and act like the only thing in common between the knives is that they're both tantos when someone points it out. If you can't admit what you're doing, it's probably a good idea to not do it in the first place, rather than to do it, then lie to their fans and customers about doing it when someone mentions it. I mean hey, they're gonna (rightfully) get on Strider's case for dishonesty, release a knife specifically meant to be a middle finger to them, then...be dishonest about doing it? Dunno, just seems wrong in my book.

They already admit it in a subtle manner in the knife's description on their website.

Cold Steel's website said:
Please don't throw away hundreds and hundreds of dollars on similar knives sold by convicted felons and rip off artists posing as elite "military operators". Get the real G.I. Tanto from Cold Steel and get more than your money's worth.

Yes. They deliberately opened the can of worms by making the knife as a copy/dig at Strider and not-subltly saying so in their ad copy. So it is CS's ****storm. Little late for them to pretend it never happened.

I think some people post without reading every post prior to their's. And it's in the post right before yours.

This is in Cold Steel's description of the knife. Sounds like they did in fact admit what you are saying they did not.

I think you missed someting in my post. I said they admitted it. In fact I said they said so "not-subltly." Hyphens matter.

In our litigious society they can publish "knives sold by convicted felons and rip off artists posing as elite 'military operators'." with no problem other than hurt feelings whereas naming names would open them to being sued for libel. If someone relates the quoted bit to a specific company that's their bad.

It's also a beartrap against litigation because by not naming names, anyone saying "hey--that's me you're talking about" would be calling themselves felons, rip off artists, and posers. :p

Except that truth is a positive defense against libel claims, and Strider had to admit to what they claim as part of his settlement. So at most it would expose them to looking mean by telling the truth about a deceitful small-time criminal's grandiose claims.

It's better this way, though. Even if you'd win, no sense in paying attorneys if you can avoid it.

Why does every thread mentioning Strider end up in a big old bashing session? Can't we all just get along? Oh, yeah, it's because they are "knives sold by convicted felons and rip off artists posing as elite 'military operators'". To use a quote often seen in certain other forums, "Now I GET IT!"

This thread didn't turn into a Strider bashing session. We are simply discussing the origins of the GI Tanto.

I was being facetious. Sorry it didn't come across that way. CS GI Tanto is one of my favorites as are my Twister and old style "trade" knives in Carbon 5. I will not put a red cent into a Strider knife on moral grounds.

So in answer to the original post, no, because those who like them don't think they need rehabilitation, and those that don't won't "rehabilitate" them anyway.

Just looking at an AK-47 now. Thumb plate, Tri-Ad, G10 handles, and at 3.5" it's not an "unfriendly" knife size (although a friend of my mother's looked at my Byrd Meadowlark 2 and commented, "that's a big knife," I had to get the Espada out).
