It followed me home (Part 2)

Yes. It is a 3lb True Temper World's Finest. Unfortunately the handle has 90 degree orientation and a few splits forming. But the head is near perfect.

Let me know if that thing needs a new home. Is it thin bitted like a typical 3lb Connie or Jersey might be? Or more compact and wedgy?

Nice and thin but still concave. Alas, it is already headed to its new owner, a forum member. Likely you will see it again someday soon on a new handle.

Picked this head up for the hefty some $1 sawbuck. Any ideas on makers? I can see THE? Maybe the Collins company? As usual any help will greatly astound me!

Couple days late on this one but what is that marking near the eye? Can't tell if it's one number like an 8 or 3 or two separate numbers. Other than that and the other marking shown is there any other markings like a weight stamp or one on the other side of the eye?

Today's haul. The brush hook is cool, It's and older Collins Hartford Cast Steel Legitimus. The Flint Edge Connie is nice too.

Woah, that big connecticut looks choice. *drool*

I'm on the verge of putting an axe head on the band saw for a little... 'creativity'...

No sir besides the "the" been looking into the possibility of it saying Panther. But haven't been able to find a pic of a double bit with a stamp. I couldn't figure out that near the eye either.

I am also curious about PANTHER axes. I'm not sure I understand the above reply.
I tried to bring out the stamp on the above double bit:

Your stamp looks like it could have "THER". Admittedly the "R" could be open to debate. The thing that I would like to see is a "PANTHER" mark in an arc as yours seems to be.

To be clear: I AM NOT READY TO BET AGAINST "PANTHER" on your axe.

Bob

Another "PANTHER" marked axe (not mine):

Wow! To be honest knowing where this axe came from I never expect a top of the line axe. Rural area and most axes are "Used" heavily. Not alot of collection pieces everything would have been used heavily and more than likely had a rough life.

Panther doesn't fit for me - depending on what the orientation of that stamp is. If the photo is oriented along the center axis (bit to bit) then the 'Panther' or whatever is skewed off to the 9 o'clock side of the circle. I think the manufacturer would put it at 12 o'clock. I suspect that there are letters missing after the the*.

If you look at the pic of the full head you can see the marking. That's another reason I have been trying to find a picture for comparison. Like understanding the many mysteries of world. This may be another that will go unanswered.

Dammit, guys, I have a problem.
You got me re-interested, and that required inventorying hafts, un-hung heads, and eye measurements. And then I had to figure out which operational axes need additional work (sheaths, etc.). So all that went onto my knifemaking Trello board, and to my 'horror' showed me that I own 13 axe-shaped items. 8 of these are operational. Two need new hafts and refurbishing, and the rest need to be hung. Only 4 have sheaths. And I ordered a H&B camp hawk... and I want to modify a head to make something... violate the unremarkable True Temper I just got, or scour the flea market for something smaller, requiring less work?
15 is THE MAX. Grr...

Picked this up at a flea market today. Don't see many 3lb Kelly western double bits. 15 bucks is cheap. The handle is trashed but I can re purpose it for a smaller tool.

Someone (PO I would presume) had a most unusual approach to trying to tighten-up a hang! Beat on, and fold in the back of the eye. It's gonna be a bit of work to recover this and not something I'd look forward to.

No kidding. I'd have passed that one up. But if rockman0 can put his hands on a drift/die for forming an eye that size, perhaps heat and hammering can ease it back into shape without cracking.
