It followed me home (Part 2)

got some stuff from a scoutmaster. if i didnt tell you guys i staffed a boy scout event called the paul bunyan camporee. while i was there i talked to a few people and word got around that i collect tools. fast forward a little bit. one of my friends was approached and asked if they knew me, they said yes so he gave her the stuff to give to me. i'll get pictures of the other stuff as i clean them up.

first we have this hand-forged imitation kelly.

as you can see there's a small bit of bit left, maybe 1/2"

i had to lean it up against another head but on the double bit on the top, you can see the edge of the chisel line in the eye, first clue it's forged.

here's the last (and most obvious) all 4 bevels are different. one looks like a kelly, the other side looks like a plumb jetwing.

I think It's either a 4 pound michigan or a 3 1/2 wisconsin. as it sits it's 3 and 6 ounces

Great tool box!

Do you know if it is a machinist box or maybe a jewlers?

Nice ANVIL, hammer and heads too:thumbsup:

It's a homemade machinist chest. Well made. I have been looking for such a thing to display my vintage pocket knives. My choices have been very expensive Gerstner chests or a new Harbor Freight machinist chest that just doesn't have the vibe that I want. This box was advertised for $45 on Craigslist and I got it for $40. For my purposes it is perfect.

I love that chest. You got a good eye.

I think that's an old Fisher anvil. A lot of them had bodies of cast rather than wrought iron which is still OK because it has a laminated steel top. And it looks like the steel covers the horn, too. That was common on old Fishers and a good thing. The bad news is that it's dished pretty badly just above the shelf. It's been heavily used but not abused.

Yes, a Fisher. Fishers and Vulcans were made the same way. Tool steel top placed in the cast and the molten iron poured in. Another characteristic that they share is being quiet.

So my mother called me a few days ago and told me she had found some axes at a little store in town. She said she wanted to bring them to me when she could. Today she dropped them off!

My mom was very proud of herself for finding these. I am always telling her to keep an eye out. I did not have the heart to tell her the issues with them. I was proud of her too. She has the obsession too just with other antiques. Sadly these are both Kelly perfects with no eye ridges. One was 3.5 and I think the other a 4, by the size and thicknesses of the heads. So my question is what should I do with these??? I need to do something with them I just don’t know what yet.

I think the first one could have something really cool done with it.
Obviously the one bit is cut way down, but you could potentially just turn it into a narrow polls or see if it's still got a bit of hardened steel left on it and turn it into a splitting side.
If you square up the heel end of it and do a bit of general reshaping the axe would actually probably look really cool

There may even be a chance to turn it into an axaroon.

You could do something with that top one. You kind of need to for the sake of your mother. I would fixe the left side by grinding the heel just short of the toe and then filing a banana grind on it. That side could still make a damn fine chopper with that Kelly Perect steel. Maybe square up the right and sharpen it fine as a carver. If you never use that side, so what? You'll have a good axe and you'll keep your mother interested in finding you axes.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the suggestions! I will definitely do something with the top one. That one side has plenty of bit. At least 2 inches of hardened steel. I will post a picture when I have the time to get it done! The axearoon intreges me but I hate to take off all that steel. I don’t I will ponder it a while and figure it out! Thanks again!!
