It followed me home (Part 2)

Picked this small haul up in a little town about two hours away from me. They had a sugar cane knife? I believe that’s what it was. It said machete on the tag but it was shorter very wide and had a hook on the spine. I want to say agent H or square peg.... maybe someone else posted a pick of one a few threads back and that’s what they called it. I passed on it but may have to contact the man about it. Thanks for looking!!

I think I am in love with that Plumb hammer!! The handle is octagon and very thin! It is amazing! You will NEVER find a new hammer in a store that has this quality to it. I just finished rehanging it. Pics soon!!

The cleaver is very nice, what is the double bit?

It is an unmarked axe with eye ridges with a few specks of red paint. I’m guessing a Woodslasher. It is in pretty good shape too. Someone tried to file it but didn’t finish the job. As long as they don’t take the bench grinder to them I’m good haha.

i always like those types of michigans. i just realized i dont have a normal, good quality/condition michigan. maybe that's next on the list after a virginia (and if someone were to offer me a trade for one, i wouldnt turn it down.).

i think that head would look nice with a medium shade handle, not dark but not blonde, somewhere in the middle.

now, we can't set up a trade on this site but that person and I could get in touch on imgur (i'd rather not put my email here since anyone can see this). my username is phantomgallery

This no-name followed me home a year or two ago from SoCal for $15 if I remember right. I finally flattened and sharpened it yesterday. Someone ground a bevel on the backside which is why I put off sharpening it. Using a Clean Cut file that I had thought would be useless it flattened the back in the course of the afternoon. Can someone tell me if the handle is homemade? It has the twin bar lathe mark on the butt of the handle but the beveling looks home done.

It's a nice tool,A17(it may need a bit more work on the cutting edge to work well though).
Not sure about the haft, but if you mean that shim in the eye,it was probably a personal adjustment to open that hang a little...

I made the shim because it worked better like that, plus I read somewhere that that was how old timers used to hang them. The middle pic is semi-before I did too much work. The reason I asked is the saw mark angles vary too much in my mind to be factory sawn.

Ah,i see.
Well, the marks look fairly consistent with someone using a tablesaw,so possibly at a smalllish supplier...Adze handles were probably not the hottest-selling item by then...So it was reasonable to run a few dozen through the saw by hand.
(or,they're the original dimentional lumber resaw marks, from before the lathe...)

The link works for me. Nice score by the way. Is the rest of the handle sound? The handle looks too nice to not reuse with that head.

The handle is in great shape. When the head was in the log there was a little movement, but I'm hoping that soaking it in oil will help snug it up and there's no movement when the head isn't buried in some wood. The wedge appears to have a metal cap that fits perfectly over the eye which I've never seen before

It would be nice to see the whole handle in one photo. I suspect it's a factory made handle that somebody slimmed for their narrow eyed adze.

Might want to leave that Winchester alone and find something more common to use, good old handles are harder to find than heads.

Thanks. It's hard to be certain but I think what you have is a hoedad handle that has been adapted to an adze. It looks a little longer and straighter than a typical adze handle. Is it 36"?

That invasive holly is gonna take off now that the canopy above it has been removed. A weed wrench is your friend.
