It followed me home

I've been slack on the photo posting, so here's some of the highlights from my wintertime junkin':

clockwise from top left: John King boy's axe (actually I htink I've had this for a while), Norfolk and Western RR Connecticut, True Temper Tomahawk, Crafstman Connecticut, Flint Edge Baltimore Kentucky type, AmericanAx Jersey, two maine axes, about 3 pounds, that have had the makers mark ground off in spite of very little use, Emerson and Stevens, and a PV wedge pattern with a hardened poll. The chisel is a 1.5" Douglass Mfg mortise chisel. Close ups to follow.

Also snagged this pile of brace bits.

And this brace next to a 6 pound Kelly World's Finest.

Most of it wasn't a screamin' deal but I would say overall the winter's been a pretty fair bargain for me.

these handles always follow me home. local (made in Maine so I'm told). Sold in lots of locales in Northern New Hampshire and the lakes region.

Very nice Vintage
It's been a slow winter around here, I haven't been able to find hardly anything in town :(

Nice Coop ;)
I guess that there use to be a fellow in Lewiston, MT that made axe handles. He would go around and sell them at pawn shops and such.
I was told that no one has heard from him in awhile. I guess he was pretty old, so who knows.
I sure wish someone else would start making some around these parts.

G-Pig, I got lucky on fleabay sometime after we traded. Though some of those connecticuts and jerseys were local so I guess there was a little migration of those northern axes down south back in the day.

Nice haul!

I'm just waiting for March when some of the flea markets reopen.

But this April I'm headed for Kalispell, MT! Any suggestions around there?

I'm just a few hours from Kalismell.

You had better stay outta my territory  :p
I already have a hard enough time keeping an eye on Moose :D

If its any in my business, whatcha going to do in Kalismell?

I'm through buying axes unless they have stamps on them. Or...
The helve sold me on this. It was at the estate sale of the guy who built the house 50 years ago. It's been used enough to get that glassy smooth feel on the handle, and the neck is only a little messed up from over-strikes. No splitting of the knob from re-hanging. There's some fairly serious rust, but the head will probably still outlast a few owners.

Collins Homestead possibly, from the remains of baby blue on the blade, but no telling really.
Oh, and $5.00- that was the other selling point.

I'm with ya on that SP,..
I never really have fooled with unmarked heads, I like to know what I have.
I do have a couple of unmarked heads, but thy were both given to me.
One is a nice little 3# Jersey that was a friend of mines great uncles. The other is a large 4# DB that was my great uncles. So at least I know that they are both old heads.

There were a lot of unmarked heads made by premium axe makers for resale by local hardware chains who put their own label on them.. I've found many nice axes with no maker's stamp including several with those ridges in the eye that you see on some premium axes. The resale value of a no-stamp axe will be lower but it might still be a very good or even premium axe.
